‘저자와의 대화’부터 ‘청춘의 서재’까지－가톨릭대학교 비교과 영역에서의 읽기와 쓰기 활동 사례－ (From ‘Dialogues with the Author’ to ‘Study Rooms of the Youth’ -An Examination of the Reading and Writing Education in the Extracurricular Activities at the Catholic University of Korea-)

초록

대학에서의 기초교양으로서 읽기와 쓰기 교육은 대략 학술적 글쓰기와 개인적글쓰기로 나뉜다. 이 둘은 대학생들의 집단적, 개인적 정체성을 형성하는 데 모두 필요하지만 대학에서는 주로 학술적 글쓰기에 무게중심을 두고 있다. 가톨릭대학교의 경우도 CAP Ι, CAP ΙΙΙ의 교육 목적이 학술적 글쓰기에 맞추어져 있는데, 그러다보니 개인적 글쓰기 및 그와 연관된 체험적 읽기는 교수에 따라 강조되거나 상대적으로 부차적으로 다루어진다.
가톨릭대학교에서는 2004년부터 2011년까지 “내가 만든 책 전시회: 젊은 책,젊은 미래”, “효과적인 책 읽기 워크숍: 저자와의 대화”, “청춘의 서재: 내 인생의한 권의 책”을 간헐적으로 진행해왔다. 필자가 보기에 이러한 비교과 활동은 학술적 글쓰기에서 부족한 부분 즉, 학생들의 개인적 읽기와 쓰기를 보완하고자 하는 특징을 갖는 것으로 보인다. 이러한 활동은 형식은 달라도 학생들의 삶의 맥락에서의 읽기와 쓰기를 독려하고, 그러한 경험을 대학공동체와 나누려는 취지를갖는 것으로 보인다.
대학생들에게 학술적 글쓰기와 개인적 글쓰기는 둘 다 중요하다. 하지만 이 둘의 유기적 통일에 한계가 있다면, 학술적 글쓰기 중심으로 이루어지는 교육에 대한 보완으로 개인의 체험에 바탕을 둔 읽기와 쓰기를 비교과에서 독려하는 것이요구된다. 또한 이러한 비교과 활동은 일시적인 행사에 그치지 말고 지속적으로개최될 필요가 있다.

영어초록

Reading and writing education as the liberal arts at the universitylevel can largely be divided into academic writing and personal writing.
Both of them are requisite for authentic reading and writing that cancontribute to the formation of the identities of university students. Normally,however, the university education places an emphasis on the academicwriting. In that respect, educational purposes of CAP Ⅰ and CAP Ⅲat Catholic university are also focused on academic writing. As a result,personal writing and its associated, experiential reading tend to betreated in a secondary way.
From 2004 to 2011 the Catholic University of Korea maintained theextracurricular activities such as “The Exhibition of the books that Imade: young books, young future”, “A workshop for effective reading:Dialogues with the author”, and “Study rooms of the youth: one book in my life”. The author of the paper takes it that these activities helpstudents to perform what we call the personal reading and writing,and in that respect, they play a significant role in supplementing theacademic writing. Those activities are supposed not only to encouragestudents’ reading and writing capacities in real life context but also toshare the associated experiences with the university communities.
Both academic writing and personal writing are important to universitystudents. When it is very hard to make a proper, systematic, and standardizedcombination of those two types of writing, however, it is seriouslysuggested that, for the purpose of supplementing academic writing, weneed to stimulate and encourage the personal reading and writingdelineated above. These considerations lead us to the conclusion thatthose extracurricular activities need to be maintained.
