초록

본 연구는 현대도예에서 도전적인 역할을 하고 있는 그레이슨 페리의 작업배경과 작품들을 살펴봄으로써, 현대미술의 맥락 안에서 그의 작품이 대중과 소통하는 지점을 찾는 한편 많은 도예가와 미술가들에게 훌륭한 본보기가 될 수 있는 가치를 발견하는 데 그 목적을 두었다.
연구의 방법은 그레이슨 페리의 작업에 관해 작품의 표현방법과 작업의 토대 등을 기술하되, 관련 단행본, 연구논문, 전시회의 도록, 인터넷 웹사이트 등을 그 기반으로 한다. 연구의 범위로 제1장에서는 그레이슨 페리의 성장 과정과 배경을 살펴봄으로써, 그의 작업이 추구한 표현방식이 대중과의 소통을 위해 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 알아본다. 제2장에서는 그레이슨 페리가 주로 사용하는 데쿠파주(Découpage) 기법을 비롯한 다양한 표현방식, 그리고 이러한 기법을 사용함으로써 파생되는 여러 양식적 특성들을 파악한다. 제3장에서는 작업의 매체로서 도예작업 방식과 그 의의를 고찰함으로써 그레이슨 페리에게 있어 도자기란 무엇을 의미하는지를 살펴본다. 제4장에서는 그레이슨 페리의 전반적 작품에 대해 서술하여 각 작품들이 내포하고 있는 이야기들을 통하여 작품성과 함께 작품의 이해를 돕고 현대 도예에 끼친 영향들을 고찰한다. 제5장 결론에서는 이상의 연구를 정리하고 요약하면서 그레이슨 페리의 작업의 중요성을 평가한다. 2003년 영국의 터너 상을 수상한 그레이슨 페리는 전통적인 도자기 표면에 성적행동인 섹스, 전쟁, 아동학대, 매춘, 성폭력 등 개인적인 이야기부터 사회문제에 이르는 다양한 주제를 비판적 그림과 사진, 글 등으로 표현 한다. 이러한 작품의 배경에는 어린 시절 계부의 폭력으로 고통당하면서 여성의 옷을 입고 예쁜 여자 아이가 되려는 성적 환상을 즐기게 되었던 아픈 경험이 자리한다. 이 때 여성으로 변신한 그의 모습은 그의 분신이자 또 다른 자아인 ‘클레어(Claire)’이며, 도자기 속에 등장하는 소녀가 바로 그녀이다. 그의 도자기 작품에 표현된 비참한 아이들의 모습이나 거친 욕설들은 그가 가정폭력과 아동학대로 상처 받은 어두운 유년기의 모습들이다. 그레이슨 페리의 작업방식인 데쿠파주(Decoupage) 기법은 성적 주제를 비롯한 난해한 주제들을 다루기 위한 장식적인 눈속임을 이용하는 것으로 잔가지 무늬를 만들어내는 기법, 데칼코마니아(décalcomanie), 콜라주(collage), 포토몽타쥬(photomontage)등의 복잡한 조합으로 이루어져 있다. 결론적으로 그레이슨 페리는 “예술가들은 남들이 생각할 수 없는 독창적인 삶을 살아야 한다.” 라고 말한다. 과연 우리가 그레이슨 페리와 같은 복장도착자로서의 삶을 쉽게 받아들일 수 있는가는 우리에게 남은 과제이다. 그러나 이제 그레이슨 페리를 인신 공격했던 언론과 대중들, 그리고 그의 작업의 정당성을 부정하던 다수의 도예가들 역시 그의 작품세계를 받아들이고 그로부터 영향 받고 있으며, 데코파주 기법 또한 예술로서의 가능성을 확대하며 미술의 진정성을 이해하는데 도움을 주고 있다. 또한 현대미술의 제한과 제약이 없는 다양성을 보여주고 있는 시대에 장르를 무색하게 하는 그의 작업은 오늘날 도예가들의 전통주의에 공격을 가하는 작업이다. 이에 본 연구는 그레이슨 페리의 작업 배경과 전반적인 작품들을 통하여 그의 독창성과 다양성 등을 연구하여 현대도예가 나아가 예술가들에게 더욱 활발한 논의를 할 수 있는 계기가 되리라 여겨진다.

영어초록

This study aims to investigate the ceramic works as well as the artistic background of Grayson Perry who has taken on a challenging role in contemporary ceramic art, in order to show what made his ceramics succeed in communicate with the pubic and what meanings they would have for contemporary ceramists and artists. The research method is based on related books, thesis, exhibition catalogs, internet web sites, etc, which have informations about Perry’s expressive methods and artistic background. In the scope of research, the first chapter looks into expressions shown in his works and its importance in the light of communication with people based on his gradual process and background. The second chapter looks into his favored expressive technique of découpage and the stylistic characteristics derived from this technique. The third chapter looks around what ceramic ware means to Perry by examining his methods of ceramic art and what ceramic art implies as an artistic medium. The fourth chapter describes his works to help readers understand his works and the artistic value of them through the stories contained in the works. The fifth chapter gives the conclusion by summing up the above researches and thinking about the importance of his work and its meaning. Grayson Perry, the winner of Turner Prize in England in 2003, is expressing critical pictures, pictures, writing, etc, on the subjects covering from his individual story including sex, war, prostitution, sexual violence, etc, in the surface of traditional ceramic ware based on the shock of sexual harrassment he experienced in childhood to social issues. The background of his works shows he who was afflicted with stepfather's violence in childhood enjoyed sexual fantasy to wear woman's clothing and to be a beautiful young girl when he approached his 10s, and his appearance transformed to a woman is Claire, his other self and other identity, and the girl appears in ceramic ware is himself. The appearance of miserable child and violent abusive languages expressed in his works are the appearances of his dark childhood wounded by domestic violence and children abuse. Découpage, his method for works, is to utilize decorative deception to handle difficult issues including sexual harrassment, is consisted of complicate combinations between the pattern to create sprigging, decalcomania, collage, photomontage, etc. He said “Artists should lead a creative life that others can not image” Whether to truly accept the life of transvestite like Grayson Perry with easy is a subject remained to us. However, even the media and people who had attacked his personally as well as many potters to have denied the justice of his works accept the world of his works and are influenced by his works today. Découpage work is considered to expand possibility as art and helps to understand the authenticity of fine art too.
Additionally, his works show variety without the restriction and limitation of modern art and put genres into the shade, is expected to be a new turning point for many artists as an opportunity to attack the traditionalism of artists. It is hoped that contemporary potters as well as artists have chances to discuss and study Grayson Perry's creativity and diversity through his works and background.
