신경림 시에 나타난 술의 의미 (The Meaning of Alcohol in Poetry of Shin Kyeong-rim)

초록

이 연구의 목적은 신경림 시에 나타난 술의 의미를 분석하는 것이다. 이 연구의 의미는 두 가지로 요약할 수 있는데, 그중 하나는 신경림 시인의 1960년대 초기시부터 2000년대 초 후기시에 이르기까지 전 작품에서 술이 어떤 의미를 지니고 있었는지를 보여주는 데 있다. 이 주제에 대한 기존의 연구는 대부분 신경림의 초기시에 국한된 것이었다. 그래서 술의 의미가 그 이후의 작품에서는 어떻게 변화했는지에 대한 연구는 전무하다. 그는 초기 시에서 술이라는 상징을 통해 농촌공동체의 해체 과정에서 농민들이 경험했던 암울한 분위기를 표현했을 뿐만 아니라 동시에 그들의 공동체적 결속력을 나타냈다. 하지만 근대화가 진행된 이후 80년대에 발표된 신경림 시에서 술의 의미는 사뭇 다르게 나타난다. 술이 도시적 삶의 일상 풍경으로 바뀌게 된 것이다. 신경림 시에서 술이 다시 의미심장한 상징으로 부활한 것은 90년대 중반 이후에 발표된 노년의 작품들에서이다. 신경림은 이 시기에 현재의 삶에 대한 성찰의 일환으로서 가족공동체에 대한 그리움을 형상화하는데, 여기서 술이 중요한 역할을 담당한다. 이 연구의 두 번째 의미는 술이 지니고 있는 시적 의미의 변화가 신경림의 초기 시와 후기 시를 연결하는 중요한 단서가 되기 때문이다. 필자는 90년대 중반 이후 신경림 시에 나타난 시적 정서가 초기 시와 유사하다는 가설을 가지고 있다. 이 시기에 자주 나타나는 과거 회상이나 삶에 대한 성찰의 시가 초기 시에 등장한 공동체에 대한 그리움의 표현이라는 것이 필자의 생각인데, 신경림 시에서 술의 의미 변화를 연구하는 것이 이 가설을 증명하는 징검다리가 되기 때문이다.
신경림 시에서 술은 1960-1970년대 시집에서 가장 많이 나온다. 이 시기의 시들은 전통사회가 해체되는 과정에서 농민들이 경험한 비애와 공동체의 결속을 그리고 있는데, 여기서 술이 이런 내용을 전달하는 상징으로 쓰이고 있다. 반면 시인이 농촌공동체와 멀어져 도시로 생활터전을 옮기도 나서 그의 시에서 술이 등장하는 빈도수는 현저하게 떨어졌다. 이것은 신경림 시에서 술의 의미가 무엇이었는지를 반증하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 이런 경향은 1980-1990년대 시집에서 주로 찾아볼 수 있다. 그런데 1990년 말과 2000년대 초에 출간된 두 시집에는 다시 술을 다루고 있는 작품들이 증가하고 있다. 필자는 이런 변화를 시인이 작품 속에서 과거에 대한 회상을 자주 하고 있다는 사실과 밀접하게 연관이 있다고 보았다. 시집 『어머니와 할머니의 실루엣』과 『뿔』에서 신경림이 시도하고 있는 과거에 대한 회상은 아옹다옹하며 함께 어울려 살던 시절과 공동체에 대한 그리움의 표현이라고 할 수 있으며, 이것은 술을 가장 많이 언급한 『농무』의 세계와 유사한 것이다. 신경림 시에서 술은 그리운 것에 대한 회상에서 빠지지 않는 소재이며 상징이다. 다시 말해 그의 시에서 술은 인간다운 가치, 그 중에서도 공동체의 정과 결속을 나타내는 대표적인 시적 상징인 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this work is to analyze the meaning of the alcohol, which appeared in the poetry of Shin Kyeong-rim. The meaning of this study can be summarized into two types. One of them is to show that have the meaning of alcohol in all his works ranging from the early 1960’s to 2000’s. Previous studies on this subject was mostly confined to the early works of Shin Kyeong-rim. So no research on how changes the meaning of alcohol in the subsequent works. Shin Kyong-rim through the alcohol symbolizes melancholy mood in rural communities and healthy vitality of farmers. However, since the city modernization the meaning of the alcohol has in poetry of Shin Kyeong-rim appeared quite different. In other words, after the community dismantling alcohol is replaced by the everyday landscape of urban life. Seeing again a revival of alcohol as a significant symbol in poetry of Shin Kyeong-rim is published in the works of old age since the mid-1990s. Shin Kyeong-rim has shaped the longing for family as part of a reflection on the present life at this time, where alcohol plays an important role. Second, because a change in the meaning of the alcohol is an important clue to connect the early poetry of Shin Kyeong-rim with the late. I have a hypothesis that poetic sentiment appeared at Shin Kyeong-rim since the mid-1990s is similar to the early. I think that a reflection on the present life is an expression of nostalgia for the community appeared in early poetry. To study the changes of the meaning of alcohol in the poetry of Shin Kyeong-rim is a stepping stone to prove this hypothesis.
Alcohol appears frequently in poems 1960-1970’s Farmer’s Dance(1973), Bird’s Pass(1979). The poems of the time deal with the sorrow of farmers and solidarity of the community in the process of dismantling the traditional society and alcohol is used as a symbol to convey this information. And then moved to the city from rural the frequency of alcohol was appeared significantly lower. It can be said that prove what’s the meaning of the alcohol in poetry of Shin Kyeong-rim. This trend can be found mainly in the anthology 1980-1990’s, Let’s Pass the Moon(1985), A Love Song for the Earnest(1988), Road(1990), The Dream of the Fallen(1993). However, works that are dealing with alcohol increase again in the poems that were published in the end of 1990’s and the begin of the 2000’s, The Silhouette of Mother and Grandmother(1998), Horns(2002). I thought that these changes are closely related to the fact that his poetry deals with the recollection of the past. This recollection that the poet is trying in two books of poetry is a expression of longing for a hard time and the community and this world is similar to Farmer’s Dance that most often mentioned alcohol. Alcohol is a symbol and a material that represents the recall for the nostalgia in poems of Shin Kyeong-rim. In his words, the alcohol is a typical poetic symbol that shows a human value, the passions and solidarity among the community.
