그림책의 손글씨를 통한 감성 전달 ‘PAIE’ 요소 개발 (Development of ‘PAIE’ Elements for Emotional Convey through Handwriting in Picture Books)

초록

연구배경 코로나19 팬데믹 이후, 손글씨 카드와 편지와 같은 아날로그 소통 방식의 가치가 재조명되고 있다. 손글씨는 개인의 감성과 개성을 전달하는 독특한 수단으로, 디지털 시대의 쿨 미디어에 대한 역반응으로 나타난다. 최근 그림책에서도 손글씨의 활용이 증가하고 있으며, 이는 다중구조와 글 없는 그림책에서 두드러진다. 국제적으로 저명한 그림책 작가들인 에밀리 그라벳(Emily Gravett), 매튜 코델(Matthew Cordell), 올리버 제퍼스(Oliver Jeffers), 피터 레이놀즈(Peter H. Reynolds) 등과 같이 그림책에 손글씨를 활용하여 정서적 소통을 강화하는 경향이 나타나지만, 기존 연구는 주로 이야기 중심으로 텍스트와 이미지의 상호작용에 집중되어 있어 조형적 측면에 관한 연구는 부족하였다. 따라서 본고는 그래픽적 관점에서 앞서 언급한 그림책 작가 4인의 손글씨를 질적 연구를 통해 분석한다. 이를 통해 문자의 그래픽적 형태로 인식되는 손글씨의 감성 전달 요소를 파악하고, 그 체계성을 제안한다.
연구방법 이론적 배경은 손글씨와 인쇄된 글의 개념 및 특징을 문헌 검토를 통해 파악하고, 그래픽 디자인 측면에서 그림책과 손글씨의 관계를 분석하였고, 노먼의 감성 디자인 이론과 정서 심리학을 파악하였다. 손글씨의 감성적 요소는 1차적으로 시각적 요소의 개성(Personality)과 음향성(Acoustics), 2차적으로 감성적 요소의 친밀성(Intimacy)과 정서성(Emotionality)의 두 가지 차원으로 나뉘었다. 그리고 감성 전달 요소를 ‘PAIE’로 체계화하였다. 질적 연구방법으로 FGI와 사례 분석을 통해 손글씨가 사용된 그림책 49권을 전수 조사하였다. 전문가 집단 4명을 대상으로 진행된 선호도 조사에 따라 10편을 최종 선정하였다. 2차례의 집중 인터뷰를 통해 ‘PAIE’ 요소의 타당성을 검증하였다. 본고에는 10편의 분석된 내용 중 지면 관계상 세 편의 사례만 수록되었다.
연구결과 제퍼스, 그라벳, 레이놀즈, 매튜 코델의 손글씨는 감성을 전달하는 요소로 나타났다. 1차적인 시각적 요소는 작가의 손글씨가 그래픽적 요소로 인식되는 개성(P)과 소리를 연상시키는 음향성(A)의 요소가 존재하였고, 2차적인 감성적 요소는 인쇄체 대신 손글씨를 사용함으로써 형성된 개인적이고 친밀한 느낌의 친밀성(I)과 글 텍스트에서 느껴진 실제 감각의 회귀성을 통해 전달되는 정서성(E)의 요소가 구체화되었다. 이러한 요소들은 작가의 다양한 감정을 전달하는 그래픽 디자인의 조형적 요소로 파악되었고, 이를 바탕으로 ‘PAIE System’의 요소 체계를 제안하였다.
결론 그래픽 디자인의 감성 전달 요소는 1차적인 시각적 요소로 개성(P)과 음향성(A)으로 구성되었고, 2차적인 감성적 요소는 친밀성(I)과 정서성(E)으로 구체화되었다. 이러한 요소들은 작가의 다양한 감정을 전달하는 그래픽 디자인의 조형적 요소로 파악되었고, 이를 바탕으로 ‘PAIE System’의 요소와 체계를 제안하였다. 그리므로 그림책에서 손글씨는 감각적 회귀로 작가와 독자의 정서적 교감을 제공하는 긴밀한 수단이 된다.

영어초록

Background Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the value of analog communication methods such as handwriting cards and letters has been rediscovered. Handwriting is a unique means of conveying an individual’s emotional and personality and appears as a reverse reaction to cool media in the digital age. In recent year, the use of handwriting in picture books has been increasing, which stands out in multiple structures and textless picture books. Internationally prominent picture book authors, such as Emily Gravett, Matthew Cordell, Oliver Jeffers, and Peter H. Reynolds, tend to reinforce emotional communication by using handwriting in picture books. However existing studies have mainly focused on the interaction of text and images focusing on stories, and studies on the formative aspect have been insufficient. Therefore, this paper analyzes the handwriting of four picture book authors mentioned above through qualitative research from a graphic perspective. Through this, the emotional transmission elements of the handwriting recognized as a graphic form of the text are identified and the system is proposed.
Methods The aim of the theoretical background was to understand the concept and characteristics of handwriting and printed texts through literature review, to analyze the relationship between picture books and handwriting in terms of graphic design, and to understand Norman's emotional design theory and emotion psychology. The emotional elements of handwriting were divided into two dimensions: Personality(P) and Acoustics(A) of primarily visual elements and Intimacy(I) and Emotionality(E) of secondary emotional elements. The emotional transmission element was systematized into ‘PAIE’. As a qualitative research method, all 49 picture books using handwriting were investigated through focus group interviews(FGI) and case analysis. Ten pieces were finally selected according to a preference survey conducted on four expert groups. The validity of the ‘PAIE’ element was verified through two intensive interviews. In this paper, only three cases were included due to the paper relationship among the 10 analyzed contents.
Results The handwriting of Jeffers, Gravett, Reynolds, and Cordell was found to be an element that conveys emotional. The primary visual element was Personality(P), in which the artist’s handwriting was recognized as a graphic element, and Acoustics(A) element reminiscent of sound. The secondary emotional element was embodied in the Intimacy(I) of a personal and intimate feeling formed by using handwriting instead of a printed body and the Emotionality(E) element transmitted through the regression of the real sense felt in the text. These elements were identified as formative elements of graphic design that conveyed the artist’s various emotions, and based on this, an elemental system of ‘PAIE System’ was proposed.
Conclusions The emotional transmission element of graphic design was composed of Personality(P) and Acoustics(A) as the primary visual element, and the secondary emotional element was embodied as Intimacy(I) and Emotionality(E). These elements were identified as formative elements of graphic design that convey various emotions of the artist, and based on this, the element and system of ‘PAIE System’ was proposed. Therefore, in picture books, handwriting becomes a close means of providing emotional communication between the artist and the reader through sensory regression.
