초록

In Japanese mythology, the Korean Peninsula was known as “the Land of Gold & Silver.” This was due in part from the fact that the southwestern region of the Korean Peninsula boasted an abundant deposit of high quality iron, a highly valued ore at the time. Initially, the Korean Peninsula was regarded by the antient Japanese as a sort of earthly paradise; however, this image eventually changed as Japan began to develop into a nation state and particularly with the advent of the so-called “legend of Jingu's invasion of the Korean Peninsula.”Regardless of its historical verity, this legend greatly influenced the formulation of Japanese perception of the Korean Peninsula during the classical & feudal periods in Japanese history. After the downfall of the Kingdoms of Goguryeo & Baekje, Japan began to directly send envoys to Tang China, effectively opening its doors to the most advanced goods and technology that China had to offer. Not unexpectedly, the Japanese people began to develop a Sinocentrical stance, thereby modifying their perception of neighboring Korea accordingly.
The 7 year war during Japan's late Feudal period and the exchange of envoys with Korea during the subsequent Edo Period brought about a heightening of official contact between the two nations, and consequently Japanese perception of Korea became more realistic and favorable. However, following the medieval period, as the movement for ‘National Learning of Japan,’ bent on glorifying Japan's antient past, began to gain momentum and the “legend of Jingu's invasion of the Korean Peninsula” resurfaced, Japanese perception of the Korean Peninsula shifted dramatically towards the ‘policy of conquering Korea by military force.’
