초록

In this essay, to find out and describe the characteristic of death expressed in Shin Kyung-Sook's novels' is being the main concern. And why main characters in her novels often have strong inclination toward death is questioned. In effect so many heroines of Shins' novels are destined to die.
To give proper answers, referring to peculiarity of heroines' self-conscious may be demanded. They seem to badly suffer from discord or inconsistent self-images. Their self-ideal and self-reality are very often inconsistent each other and huge gaps lie between them, which result in denial of self-reality. Those who obstinately deny their reality or given condition would suppose their real place is some elsewhere, not here. Such attitude is connected with transcendental self-conscious, and it leads to eliminate the ground of life. In these conditions Nirvana principle wins over instinct of self-preservation. Nirvana principle unnoticed but consistently provokes wish for Nirvana, retiring to nihil in Shin's heroines.
For example, her Novel, Violet shows a heroine, named Oh San, who is doomed to die due to a huge gap between self-ideal and self-reality. This type of girls has such a fragile ego to accept her actual world, so she goes out of here into some else-where, to an imagined real world, that can be called Nirvana or death.
