외국인 유학생을 위한 한국어 문학 교육의 방법 연구 (Research on the pedagogy of teaching Korean literature to international students.)

초록

이 논문은 한국 대학에 재학 중인 외국인 유학생을 대상으로 교육의 방법을 모색하고자 한다. 한국어 문학 수업을 통해 한국어 능력 향상과 함께 한국의 사회와 문화에 대한 이해까지 가능하다는 것이 이 연구의 전제이다.
첫 단계로 성균관대학교에 입학한 유학생 85명의 대학 입학 전 한국문학을 공부한 경험과 학습한 문학 장르와 작품, 필요성에 대한 인식 여부를 조사했다. 조사 결과 약 60%의 응답자는 한국어 문학의 학습 경험이 있었고 약 80%의 학생들은 유학생을 위한 문학 수업의 개설을 요구했다. 또한 문학을 통해 한국의 사회와 문화에 대한 학습을 희망했다. 따라서 외국인 유학생을 위한 새로운 문학교육의 내용과 방법의 모색이 필요한 것으로 여겨진다.
유학생 전용과목으로서의 대학 교양 수업의 텍스트로 김려령의 청소년 소설 『완득이』를 선택했다. 『완득이』는 외국어 문학교육에서 기대하는 언어, 문화, 인간성장 모델을 모두 충족하고 있기 때문이다.
실제 수업은 세 단계로 진행될 것이다.
첫 번째는 텍스트 내용 이해 단계로 소설 텍스트의 어휘를 익히고 사건을 통해 이야기를 파악할 것이다. 두 번째는 텍스트 이해 심화 단계인데 인물간의 관계와 사건의 이면적 원인을 찾아내어 텍스트 표면의 줄거리로는 알 수 없었던 사실들을 이해하게 된다. 세 번째는 확장 단계로 이해된 내용을 바탕으로 사회 문화적인 요소들을 이해하고 연관된 지식을 습득하는 단계이다. 이러한 단계별 학습을 통해 학습자들은 한국어 능력의 향상과 함께 한국 사회와 문화에 대한 지식을 넓힐 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.

영어초록

This article makes the claim that by using Korean literature as a learning tool, international students not only improve their performance of Korean but their understanding of Korean society and culture.
As the first stage of this research, I surveyed ninety-nine international students currently enrolled in Sungkyunkwan University. The questionnaires inquired about the students’ experience with reading Korean literature before enrolling the university, the genre and titles of Korean literature they had read (if any), and their opinion on the necessity and goal of studying Korean literature. I found out that 60 percent of the target group studied Korean literature beforehand, and that the majority of literature read was Korean classical literature. Although they concurred with the necessity of learning Korean literatures, they did not want to enroll in literature courses. The major reason for their reluctance to enroll in courses of Korean classics was their concern about competing with heritage students and language competency. Considering that about 80 percent of students asked to open the courses on Korean literature exclusively for the international students, Korean literature classes exclusively for international students is necessary.
An important matter to address for this proposed course is the selection and development of pedagogically pertinent Korean literature. A fiction, Wandeukyi by Ryouryoung Kim, seems to be an exemplary text for the exclusive course since Wandeukyi satisfies the requirements—the proper use of language, Korean culture, and the growth of characters.
I propose to teach a Korean literature course based on Wandeukyi in three phases. The first phase is to understand the explicit contents of the text. Students will deepen their understanding in the second phase. In the third phase, students will expand the knowledge accumulated through the previous phases. Through these phases, not only will students be able to improve their language proficiency, but develop and expand their understanding on the society and culture in Korea. The pedagogy for teaching Korean language and culture to the international students has not been fully developed. This article is an attempt to contribute to the pedagogy.
