공학인증제와 대학생 글쓰기 교육 (ABEEK Accreditation and College Composition Education)

초록

<사고와 표현>교과는 공학교육에서 교양교육의 핵심적인 위치에 놓여 있다. <사고와 표현> 교과의 여러 성격들은 공학교육에서 교양교육의 일반적 지향과 잘 부합된다. 이 글은 공학인증평가기준에서 요구하는 내용과 <사고와 표현> 교과의 성격을 비교 분석하고(2장), 이를 바탕으로 현재 진행되고 있는 교양교육 가운데 <사고와 표현>교과목을 중심으로 교과운영의 문제(3장)와 제안점(4장)을 살펴보았다. 본 논문에서는 주로 조선대학교의 사례가 원용되었다. 대학교육을 지식의 습득이나 평생직업의 완벽한 준비라는 관점에서만 접근하는 것은 구시대적인 발상이다. 그 대신 졸업생들이 필요로 하는 것들, 예컨대 지식, 이해, 기능, 비판적·성찰적·창조적 사고습관, 의사소통, 평생학습 등이 교수·학습의 의미를 변화시키고 있다는 사실들이 강조되고 있다. <사고와 표현>교과의 우선점 가운데 하나는 대학의 신입생들이 보다 더 쉽게, 그리고 효과적으로 이 담화공동체의 일원이 되도록 도와주자는 데에 모아진다. 이런 문제의식을 바탕으로 다음의 몇 가지를 제안하였다. 첫째, 교수는 모든 신입생의 대학 경험의 중심에 서 있다. 교수집단의 지원과 열정이 없다면 신입생 경험과 노력은 장기적으로 성공하기 어렵다. 대학은 교수와 신입생의 상호작용을 증진시키기 위해 보다 적극적으로 교수를 지원해야 한다. 예컨대 교수 개발활동, 교육자원, 관련된 실천 공동체에 참여할 수 있는 기회의 제공, 적절한 보상체계 등이 여기에 포함될 수 있다.둘째, <사고와 표현>교과의 교재는 철저히 자기주도적인 문제해결능력의 고취라는 원리가 관철되는 내용구성과 문제들로 채워져야 하겠다. 이는 교재의 내용을 전략과 과정중심으로 재편해야 한다는 점을 의미한다. PBL 교수법은 이런 지향을 해결하는 하나의 모델이 될 수 있다. 셋째, 통합적인 학습모형을 적용할 필요가 있다. 나아가 이들 문제들은 소영역의 단위학문영역(예컨대, 건축·재료·화학·전기… 등과 같은)에서의 인증기준 등의 관심사와 요구를 반영할 수 있는 내용과 과제문항들이 개발되어야 한다. 이를 위해 대학차원에서의 심층적인 필요조사와 함께 교재개발을 위한 선행연구와 자료 수집활동이 강화되어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

This subject, <Thinking and Expression>, has been playing the key role in liberal education of the field of engineering education. Those multiple characteristics of the <Thinking and Expression> subject are regarded to correspond to what liberal education has been basically pursuing. As a comparison and analysis both on what the criteria of accreditation for engineering are currently demanding and on the characteristics of the <Thinking and Expression> subject (Chapter 2), this study looked into issues in connection with how to operate this subject, <Thinking and Expression>, one of the liberal educational curriculums which is being currently conducted (Chapter 3), and talked about what the study would like to suggest in regard to the subject (Chapter 4). This study basically quoted the cases of Chosun University. It is such an outdated belief to approach the university education only from a viewpoint of how this higher education is merely acquisition of knowledge or a process of preparation for one to get a lifelong occupation. Instead, at present, these facts that how all these things that the graduates would need, for instance, knowledge, understanding, functions, critical/introspective/creative thinking habits, communication, lifelong learning and others, have been making changes in the meanings of teaching and learning are being emphasized. One of the main ideas that the <Thinking and Expression> subject has been working on agrees to this argument that we should help freshmen at college to be members of this discourse community even more easily and effectively. Such critical mind has led the study to make a few suggestions presented as follows. First, professors are those who have the greatest influence on what every single FYS(first year students) might go through at college. Experiences and efforts of the FYS will hardly achieve any successful results unless there are support and passion of the professors. Colleges should be more willing to support the professors if they would like to improve the interaction between the professors and the FYS. For example, teaching development works, educational resources, chances to participate in any relevant practical communities, a proper compensation system and others could be included in what should be supported. Second, a textbook of the <Thinking and Expression> subject does need to deal with contents and issues that always concern the problem-solving based principle. What this study argues for, here, signifies that the contents of the textbook must be revised with strategies and processes focused and emphasized. Third, a stepwise learning model should be applied. In addition, these contents and research inquiries that could reflect interests and demands of the criteria of accreditation and others in connection with an individual field of studies (for instance, architecture, material, chemistry, electricity … etc.) of the sub-domains must be developed. In order to achieve what has been discussed so far, the study suggests that colleges should carry out necessary, in-depth investigations as paying greater attention on advance researches and data collection works that would help colleges when they try to design any better textbooks.
