삼신 신화로서의 <당금애기> 연구 : 동해안본을 중심으로 (A Study on as a Samshin Mythology : Focused on East Coast version)

초록

서사를 임신 서사와 출산·육아 서사로 나누어, 각각에 나타난 삼신으로서의 면모를 고찰하였다. 출산과 육아는 선행연구에서 지적한 바와 같이 여성의 삶의 경험과 유사한 성격을 지니는 동시에 극한의 환경 속에서도 훌륭하게 해냈다는 점에서 순산과 육아를 기원하는 대상인 삼신의 성격과 맞닿아 있다고 논의했다.
한편 임신은 중과 당금애기의 거절-제안의 반복 속에 결연이 이루어진다는 점에 주목하여, 신과 당금애기의 관계를 중심으로 고찰하였다. 신은 당금애기를 설득하며 모든 일은 당금애기의 동의가 내려진 후에 진행된다. 여타 서사무가에서는 신의 절대성과 권위가 강조되는 것과 달리 <당금애기>에서는 신이 자신이 원하는 것을 얻어내고자 당금애기를 설득하는 것이다. 이에 <당금애기>에는 세상의 질서를 관장하는 신조차도 마음대로 할 수 없는 당금애기만의 고유의 능력으로서 잉태가 형상화된다고 논의하였다.
그리고 당금애기의 좌정 과정을 통해 <당금애기>에 나타난 삼신의 신적 위치와 그 의미에 대해 고찰했다. 신이 당금애기를 좌정시키는 과정에서 그를 징치하려 함으로써 관계 양상에 변화가 나타난다. 본고에서는 신이 스스로 해결할 수 없는 후손이라는 결핍을 당금애기를 통해 해결한 후로 징치가 지연된 점에 주목하였다. 이는 당금애기와 맺었던 기존의 관계를 철회하고 신 중심의 질서 아래에 삼신을 위치시키는 것이다. 이러한 신의 행동은 당금애기의 고유한 힘을 인정하는 동시에 그를 무속 질서 속에 위치시키는 효과를 갖는다. 이러한 삼신의 형상화는 삼신에 대한 민간의 강한 믿음을 수용하는 한편 그를 무속의 질서하에 위치시킴으로써 무속의 권능이 강조되는 효과를 갖는다고 논의했다.

영어초록

This paper analyzes characteristics of Samshin portrayed in <Danggeum-aegi> myth. First, we propose a novel perspective to divide the narrative structure of <Danggeum-aegi> to demonstrate that the protagonist (Danggeum-aegi)’s actions manifest features of the deity (Samshin) she will eventually become. The narrative was conventionally divided into the three-part structure of pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. Instead, we propose a two-part division of pregnancy and childbirth-parenting, emphasizing the latter. Prior research has emphasized the similarity between the childbirth and parenting experience of the protagonist and that of women's life experiences of the time. This paper suggests that this narrative segment implies the characteristic of Samshin residing in the protagonist, since her completion of childbirth and rearing, achieved through extreme conditions described in the myth, implicates the essence of Samshin, a deity to whom people prayed for safe childbirth and successful parenting. The segment of pregnancy is analyzed with an emphasis on the fact that the conception takes place only after repeated scenes of proposals and rejections between Danggeum-aegi and God disguised as a Buddhist monk, focusing on the relationship between the two. The point is that the God must persuade her and nothing happens without her consent; this is a distinctive feature of <Danggeum-aegi> myth compared to the other ones, in which the God is primarily an absolute and dominating figure. In <Danggeum-aegi>, he is the one who does the persuasion to get what he desires. Thus we interpret thus the conception as a unique ability of the protagonist that even the omnipotent God cannot bend to his will.
Secondly, this paper analyzes the position of Samshin in the hierarchy of gods, observable in the ascent of Danggeum-aegi as a deity. The God lifts her to the ranks of the gods but also indicates in the process his intention to punish her for disrespect. We focused on the temporal moment that this reprimand happens. God does not punish her at the moment of the disrespect, but delays it to some point after the conception, by which he has solved the lack of progeny he cannot acquire by himself; even then, he does not execute the punishment but decides only to show his intention. This symbolizes the nullification of prior arrangement between the two as equal parties of negotiation and incorporation of Samshin (Danggeum-aegi) under the order of God. The intrinsic power of Samshin is recognized, but she must submit herself to the order centered around God.
We conclude that such representation of Samshin portrays a complex objective set for the Korean shamanism of acknowledging the faith people have toward Samshin and at the same time putting and taming her under the established order of shamanism to accentuate the authority of shamanism.
