『제불세존여래보살존자명칭가곡』의 재조명 (Re-examination of 『Songs for the Names of Various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas』(“Various Names Songs”))

초록

연구는 『명칭가곡』이 한국음악학자들에게 아직 생소한 사료인 점을 고려하여 먼저 기존 연구 가운데 한국음악사와 상관된 국내외의 대표적인 연구성과를 가능한 한 꼼꼼히 검토하였다. 그런 뒤에 『명칭가곡』의 수록내용을 상세히 살펴 『명칭가곡』에 대한 이해를 도모하고, 권1-18에 집중되어있는 불、세존、여래、보살、존자명칭가곡의 창작 배경과 곡패의 활용실태에 대하여 검토하였다. 마지막으로 『명칭가곡』에 명시된 곡패들을 통하여 여말선초 당악의 일부를 추고할 수 있는 가능성을 타진해 보았다. 그 결과, 다음과 같은 사실들을 알게 되었다. ① 1417년(영락15)에 전 47권의 초간본이 완성되었고, 이후 수정(전 47권)、증보(전 50권)를 거쳐 1420년(영락18) 4월에 최종적으로 전 51권으로 확대되었다. ② 『명칭가곡』은 1417년(태종 17년)、1418년(태종18)、1418년(세종 즉위년)、1419년(세종원년) 등 4차에 걸쳐 조선조에 유입되었다. 제1-3차로 유입된 것은 최초의 초간본이고, 제4차로 유입된 것은 전 47권의 수정본이었으며, 전 50권의 증보본과 전 51권의 최종본은 조선조에 유입되지 않았다. ③ 전 51권의 『명칭가곡』은 권1-18과 권19-47 및 권48-51 세부분으로 구분되는데, 그 중 제1부분인 권1-18에 ≪명칭가곡≫이 수록되었다. 책명은 제불、제세존、제여래、제보살、제존자에게 대덕 발원을 희망하는 공양곡에 역점을 두어 책명을 『제불세존여래보살존자명칭가곡』이라 하였다. ④ 권1-18에 수록된 ≪명칭가곡≫은 음성공양을 위한 가곡으로서 기본적으로 북、남 지역으로 양분되었고, 공양대상에 따라 불、세존、여래、보살、존자로 분류되었다. ≪명칭가곡≫의 선율로 활용된 곡패의 수는 총 322곡이며, 그 중 북곡곡패 206곡이 ≪명칭가곡≫ 북곡의 선율로, 남곡곡패 98곡이 ≪명칭가곡≫ 남곡의 선율로, 남북통용 곡패 18곡이 ≪명칭가곡≫ 북、남곡의 선율로 활용되었다. ⑤ 322곡 곡패는 “1곡 1종목 1수”(6곡)、“1곡 1종목 다수”(248곡)、“1곡 다종목 다수”(51곡)、“1곡 북、남 다종목 다수”(17곡)의 방식으로 활용됨으로써 마침내 2,049곡의 ≪명칭가곡≫으로 재탄생될 수 있었다. ⑥ 322곡 곡패 중 13곡은 『고려사』「악지」의 당악곡과 곡명이 같다는 점에서 상호 비교 연구가 가능하다. 뿐만 아니라 ≪후정화≫나 ≪풍입송≫에 대해서도 관심을 가질 만하다.
이상의 연구결과를 통하여 『명칭가곡』에 대한 이해를 높이고, 향후 『고려사』「악지」 소재 당악과의 비교 연구를 통하여 여말선초 당악의 실체를 추고하고, 재연을 시도할 수 있는 가능성을 열게 되었다.

영어초록

Considering that 『Various Names Songs』(名稱歌曲) is a historical material that is still unfamiliar to Korean music scholars, this study first closely examined the representative research achievements done at home and abroad related to Korean music history. Then, this study exmained the contents of 『Various Names Songs』 in detail to seek the understanding thereof. It further examined the creative background of the songs for names of Buddha, Sakya, Tathāgata, Bodhisattva, and Buddhist priest of eminent virtue concentrated in volumes 1-18 and the actual use of melody. Lastly, the study explored the possibility of inferring a part of Tang music of the late Goryeo and early Joseon through the melodies specified in 『Various Names Songs』. As a result, the following facts were found. ① In 1417 (Yeongnak 15), a total of 47 first editions were completed, and after revision (all 47 volumes) and augmentation (all 50 volumes), in April 1420 (Yeongnak 18), the volume was finally expanded to 51 volumes. ② 『Various Names Songs』 was introduced to the Joseon Dynasty over four periods, including 1417 (17th year of King Taejong), 1418 year (18th year of King Taejong), 1418 (1st year of King Sejong), and 1419 (the first year of King Sejong. The version, introduced in the 1st to 3rd periods, was the first edition, and the version, introduced in the 3th period, was the complete 47 revised volumes, while the 50-volume complete augmented version and 51-volume final version were not introduced to Joseon. ③ All 51 volumes of ‘Various Names Songs’ are divided into volumes 1-18, 19-47 and 48-51, and of them, the first part ≪Various Names Songs≫ was recorded in Volume 1-18. The title of the book was called “Various Names Songs”, with emphasis on offerings to the Buddhas, Sakya, Tathāgata, Bodhisattva, and Buddhist priest of eminent virtue. ④ The ≪Various Names Songs≫ listed in Volumes 1-18 are basically songs for offering with music, divided into North and South regions, and classified into Buddha, Sakya, Tathāgata, Bodhisattva, and Buddhist priest of eminent virtue according to the target of offering. The total number of melodies used in tunes of ≪Various Names Songs≫ is 322. Among them, North music melody 206 tunes were used as ≪Various Names Songs≫’s North music melodies, South melody 98 tunes were used as ≪Various Names Songs≫’s South music melodies, and South-North common melody 18 tunes were used as ≪Various Names Songs≫’s North and South music melodies. ⑤ 322 tunes melodies were used in the way as “1 song, 1 item, 1 number” (6 songs), “1 song, 1 item, multiple” (248 songs), “1 song, multiple items” (51 songs), and “1 song, North, South multiple items” (17 songs) so they were able to be finally reborn as “Various Names Songs” of 2,049 tunes. ⑥ 13 of the 322 tune melodies are the same as Tang music and title of song in 『Goryeosa (History of Goryeo)』「Akji (On Music)」, so it is possible to conduct a comparative study. In addition, it is worth paying attention to ≪Hujeonghwa Tune≫ or ≪Pungipsong Tune≫.
The findings of this study increased the understanding of 『Various Names Songs』, inferred the reality of Tang music of the late Goryeo and early Joseon through comparative studies with Tang music in 『History of Goryeo』「On Music」 , and opened up the possibility of trying to reenact the songs.
