북간도 명동학교 막새기와의 꽃문양에 나타난 민족의식 (Korean Nationalism Reflected in the Convex Tile-ends Flower Pattern of the Myeongdong School in Bukando)

초록

北間島 明東村 건물의 막새기와에 새겨진 꽃문양의 정체를 독립운동과 연관시켜 밝히려는 것이 이 글의 목적이다. 이를 위해 근대 시기 이화와 무궁화의 등장과 변화 과정을 기존 연구에 덧붙여 새로운 자료로 밝혔다.
일본의 영향으로 이화가 화폐 등의 도안으로 사용되고, 대한제국 皇室紋章으로 사용되면서國花처럼 보였다. 그러나 일제의 강압으로 1905년 이후 이왕가의 가문으로 격하되어 버린다. 반면 무궁화는 1900년의 「훈장조례」나 「문관대례복제식」에 무궁화를 주문양, 1902년 『애국가』 표지에 사용하면서 대한제국의 國花로 상징화시키려 했다. 무궁화 노래를 부르고, 문서 등에 사용하면서 무궁화는 자연스럽게 겨레꽃, 국화로 승화된다.
이러한 역사적 흐름을 배경으로 막새기와의 꽃문양을 2가지 관점으로 해석하였다. 첫째는 도상학으로써 이화와 무궁화 어느 쪽으로도 보인다. 둘째는 역사학, 심성학으로써 무궁화로만 보인다. 이는 민족교육과 독립운동의 거점이었던 명동촌에서 이화를 상징으로 받아들이지 않았기 때문이다. 단지 무궁화 도상이 없어 이화문을 응용하였거나, 명동촌에 자생했던 살구꽃으로 독립운동을 위장하였을 가능성도 있다. 외형이야 어떻든 명동촌에서는 이를 무궁화로 받아들였던 것이다.
명동학교는 해외의 민족학교이다. 그래서 민족의식을 고취하기 위해 학교 건물은 물론 가옥 의 막새기와에 태극과 무궁화 문양을 새겼던 것이다. 해외에서 일어났던 항일독립투쟁은 그 저변에 민족의 정신적 기반 없이는 불가능하다. 따라서 명동촌 막새기와의 태극과 무궁화가 민족의식의 기반이 되었음은 분명하다. 이 글을 계기로 그 배경이자, 정신적 기반이 되었던 문화읽기를 통해 독립운동사연구, 근현대사연구의 외연이 확장되기를 기대한다.

영어초록

This paper aims to identify tile-end patters found in Myeongdong village, Bukando and the relation to the Independence movement. To this end this paper shows an additional part about the advent of Ihwa (flower of plum) and Mugunghwa (rose of Sharon) and their changing processes in the modern period to the existing research.
As Japan introduced Ihwa as the standard pattern for the currency note design and also the flower started to be used as a national emblem of the Daehan empire, it was considered as the national flower. The flower’s status was lowered to a family emblem of Yiwangga by the Japan’s high-handed policy since 1905. Mugunghwa, however, became a symbol of the national flower of Daehan empire by being a main flower pattern in 「Hunjangjorye」(1900) and 「Mungwandaeryebokjesik」(1900) and appearing on the cover-page of 『National Anthem』(1902). By singing Mugunghwa song and using the flower as a letterhead pattern, the flower has naturally become the national flower.
On this historical background, this paper understands flowery patterns in two perspectives. Firstly, from a iconographical point, the flower could be both Ihwa and Mugunghwa. Secondly, from historic and sentimental perspectives, the flower seems to be Mugunghwa only. It is because Myeongdong village, mecca of the national education and independence movement, does not accept Ihwa flower as a national symbol. There is some possible reasons: just because they did not have a proper Mugunghwa design, they applied Ihwa pattern to making Mugunghwa icon; people used the native apricot flower in Myeongdong as a camouflaged flower symbol of the independence movement. Regardless of its physical features, people in Myeongdong village considered the flower as Mugunghwa.
Myeongdong school is one of national schools abroad. In order to encourage nationalism, founders intentionally carved patterns of Taegeuk and Mugunghwa on the school building as well as convex tile-end of residential houses. Without this kind of nationalism it was virtually impossible to organize a series of Independence movement against Imperial Japan. Accordingly, it is obvious that the patterns of Taegeuk and Mugunghwa on the convex tile-ends was part of sentimental foundation of Korean nationalism in Myeongdong village. Hope this paper provide an opportunity to broaden research area of history of Korean Independece movement and Korean Modern & Contemporary History by interpreting ‘culture of the time’ which was obviously crucial part of cultural background and foundation of the national spirit.
