초록

In this paper, I mainly studied about the acception of modern geography in the early twentieth century China. First of all, I found the strong connection between the 100th issue of Issues for Discussion(淸議報) and the New People's Miscellany(新民叢報) in its arrangement of Articles. Considering these Journals are published by basically same members, we can realize the main reason for reconstruction in 100th issue is resulted from preparing the New People's Miscellany.
In that process, ‘Modern geography', this field of knowledge was noticed and accepted. It's very interesting that they paid most attention to modern geography, especially “Environmental determinism”. In those days, they had strong aspirations to find a condition of modernization. That is why they was engrossed in the subject. Furthermore, they firmly believed the ‘Environmental determinism' will be able to help to accumulate modern knowledge, because it was viewed as a “Schema”, that is, the frame of understanding by themselves. And, It also needs to be mentioned that they continuously attended the boundary of their nation and stressed the importance of marking on it. Many maps in those days are advertised through similar slogan in their journal. These facts call us attention to the fact that they were awakening that the geographical information through several articles on “Environmental determinism” consequently developed the nationalism.
But they were never stuck in “Environmental determinism”, also awared of its weak point that it easily go to mechanical determinism. It seemed that Yanfu(嚴復) had realized the seriousness of their inclination, so he opposed the idea of Liangqichao(梁啓超), in fact, his idea represented the other writers of magazine publisher. But after all, their ultimate aim is the same.
In this respect, it's also noteworthy that the map on its cover design represents China with two rivers, because it can be regarded as the intensive symbol of their intention.
