박연철 그림책의 서사구조 연구 - 거짓말 테마를 중심으로 - (A Study on the Narrative Structure in Picture Book by Park Yeoncheol - Focus on lie theme -)

초록

이 글은 박연철의 그림책에 나타난 서사구조에 관해 알아보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 박연철의 그림책은 지금까지 표현 영역에서 주로 다뤄졌기에 내용 분석을 보충한다면 그의 그림책을 파악하는 데 도움이 될 것이라 판단했다. 특히 그가 초기부터 최근까지 일관되게 관심을 갖고 테마로 견지하고 있는 ‘거짓말’이라는 화두에 대해 살피는 것을 우선적인 작업으로 삼았다. 먼저 박연철 그림책에 나타나는 거짓말의 시작 지점 또는 끝 지점을 ‘작가소개’로 정하고 그에 대해 고찰하였다. 박연철 그림책의 작가소개는 철저히 허구적인 속성을 지닌 이야기로 구성된다. 본고에서는 그 이유를 그림책 자체의 완성도 또는 이야기의 완성도를 높이기 위해 허구적인 세계의 비율을 최대치로 끌어올리려는 작가의 의도라 보았다. 그를 뒷받침하는 논거로 우주에서 온 외계인의 이야기가 작가소개에 단골로 등장하는 것을 들었다. 누구나 우주 공간이 명확히 존재한다는 것을 알지만 가까이 감각하거나 쉽게 확인할 수는 없다. 이야기라는 허구의 세계 역시 있으나 증명하기 어려운 속성을 지니고 있다는 점에서 우주 공간과 닮은 부분이 있다. 외계인이나 우주 공간이 박연철의 이야기 세계에서 이물감 없이 출현하는 이유를 밝히고자 하였다. 다음으로 박연철의 페르소나로 기능하는 피노키오라는 캐릭터의 의미를 논하였다. 피노키오는 거짓말의 화신이다. 거짓말로 인해 신체적인 차이를 지니게 되는 것이 피노키오 캐릭터의 존재 핵심이다. 이러한 캐릭터를 반복하는 이유는 작가가 어린이의 거짓말 혹은 ‘분홍 거짓말’이라 일컫는 현상에 대해 옹호하고자 하는 데서 발생한 것으로 보았다. 성장 단계에서 거짓말을 통해 순수한 자아와 사회적 자아의 분열과 통합을 겪는 것은 정상적인 과정이다. 그림책의 독자가 그것을 제대로 받아들이도록 하기 위해 박연철은 피노키오 캐릭터를 강조한다. 이야기꾼으로서 성장을 겪는 독자가 거짓말을 통해 고정적인 가치관으로부터 벗어나기를 유도하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 마지막으로는 서사 전략으로 사용되는 ‘놀이’에 대해 논구하였다. 박연철은 숨바꼭질이나 숨은그림찾기, 물구나무서기 등의 놀이를 통해 독자와 소통을 시도한다. 여러 그림책에서 그러한 놀이들을 유의미하게 제시하면서 독자에게 말을 걸고 놀이를 하자고 제안한다. 폐쇄적인 관계나 이야기가 아닌 누구나 참여하는 열린 서사 구조에 가까우며 어떤 면에서 그것은 박연철이 『떼루떼루』에서 차용한 바 있는 전통 연희의 속성과도 닿아 있다. 누구나 참여하는 열린 서사 구조를 지향하기 때문에 박연철은 그림책 독자의 범위를 어린이만으로 제한하지 않는다. 그림책의 중심 독자는 어린이지만 그것을 선별하고 구입하는 1차 독자는 성인이다. 작가의 입장에서는 폭넓은 독자 기준에 맞도록 아이의 재미와 어른의 기대를 모두 충족하는 방식을 선택하는 것이 필요하다. 이 글은 처음부터 박연철의 그림책을 양가 가치가 작용하는 텍스트로 규정하였는데 그것은 결국 그가 그림책 안에서 이중적⋅양면적 놀이 서술 전략을 구사하고 있음을 강조하기 위해서다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the lie that appears in the picture book by Park Yeoncheol. Although his picture book has been mainly dealt with in the area of expression area, it was considered that supplementing the content analysis would be helpful in grasping his picture book. This study, In particular, mainly focused on the 'lie', a theme to which he has consistently paid attention from the beginning to the present. First, beginning point or the end point of a lie that appears in his picture book was set as a 'author introduction' and reviewed. The author introduction in his picture book consists of stories with utterly fictional attributes. This study suggests that such fictional attribute is from author's intention to increase the share of the fictional world as high as possible in order to improve the perfection of the picture book itself or the completeness of the story. As a support for above suggestion, the story of the aliens from outer space appeared frequently in the author introduction. As with the space that is clearly present but not easily verifiable, the fictional world of the story also has such attribute, therefore, was contrasted with the lie. Next, the meaning of the character Pinocchio, which functions as a persona of Park Yeoncheol was discussed. Pinocchio is an incarnation of lies. The core in the existence of the character Pinocchio is the change in body due to lying. The reason for repeating these characters was supposed to be the intention of author to defend the called child's lie or a phenomenon called 'pink lie'. It is a normal process to experience divisions and integrations of pure and social selves through lying during growth, and Park Yeoncheol, making readers to accept it thoroughly, emphasizes the Pinocchio character. It is suggested that Park Yeoncheol, as a storyteller, is encouraging the readers in the process of growth to escape, through lying, from fixed values. This study, finally, discussed 'play' which is used as a narrative strategy. Park Yeoncheol seeks communication with readers through play such as hide-and-seek, hidden picture search, and a handstand. The way of talking to readers and of proposing to play to them is also connected with the attributes of the traditional play he quote preferentially. It is closer to open narrative structure that everyone participates in rather than a closed relationship or story. Park Yeoncheol, to achieve such structure, does not limit the scope of his readers to children because, though the main readers of picture book is a child, the first readers who select and purchase it are adults. From the standpoint of author, it is necessary to choose a method that satisfies desires for both fun and educational effect in order to meet a wide range of readers. This study prescribed Park Yeon chul's picture book as a text in which the dual value works in order to emphasize that he uses dual/two-sided describing-play strategy in his picture book.
