마녀의 시각적 표현 양상에 대한 인식 변화의 고찰 -지브리와 디즈니 애니메이션 마녀 캐릭터들을 중심으로- (A Study on the Change in Perception through the Visual Expression Aspect of Witches -Focusing on Witch Characters in the Animation of Ghibli and Disney-)

초록

본 연구는 마녀(魔女, Witch)라는 대상을 과거부터현재까지 다양한 방식의 시각적 표현물을 연구 및 분석함으로써 마녀의 의미전달에 대한 인식 변화를 규명하고자 한다.
과거 마녀는 종교개혁과 함께 등장하였다. 사회의불안이나 재앙과 같은 공포가 특정 개인에게 전가되었고, 이들이 사회의 속죄양으로 취급되었다. 더욱 불행한 것은 마법과 주술이 사회 내에 발생하던 불안정요소들을 제거하는 수단이 아니라, 오히려 그 연장선상에서 재앙을 부르고 상황을 악화시키는 역할로 치부된 것이다. 사회적 약자, 소수자였던 여성들이 마녀라는 대상으로 변질되어 과거에 정치적 수단으로써이용당하고 희생되며, 악의적인 처사를 통해 부정적인의미 세습이 긴 시간 동안 무비판적으로 통용되어 왔다. 이렇듯 마녀는 마법을 사용하는 초월적 대상임에도 불구하고 과거의 부정적인 측면이 관습적으로 이어져 오며 현대에 이르러서도 그러한 개념이 보편적인 인식 속에 머물고 있다. 하지만 아이러니하게 다양한 매체를 통해 대중들에게 소비되기도 한다. 이를테면 드라마, 영화, 애니메이션, 게임 속에도 등장하며TV 광고와 제품 디자인의 그래픽적 요소 등에서도쉽게 접할 수 있다.
본 논문에서는 마녀의 상징성 부여 과정을 역사적, 종교적 측면에서 연구하고 현시점에서 소비되는 마녀의 의미와 변천 과정을 다양한 사례를 통해 확인하였다. 또한 대표적인 애니메이션 제작사의 마녀 캐릭터를내⋅외적 특성으로 분류 및 분석하였다. 이를 통해 애니메이션 스토리상 부여된 캐릭터의 성격과 외적으로드러나는 색채의 형용사적 의미(I.R.I 색채 이미지 형용사 분석)를 추출하여 인식 변화 양상을 파악하였다.
본 연구의 결과는 마녀의 인식 변화 과정을 시간의흐름에 따른 시각적 표현물을 연구함으로써 현대 사회에서 마녀라는 대상을 다양한 측면으로 소비하며새롭게 해석된 의미를 공유하고 이를 통해 긍정적 측면의 의미 재창조 양상을 확인하였다. 이러한 사회적현상이 과거 사회에서 관습화, 학습화를 통해 세뇌시켜온 여성의 왜곡된 이미지를 타파하고 사회적 소수와 약자로 치부되었던 여성들이 사회 진출의 역할로변화함으로써 여성의 젠더적 개념을 재정립할 수 있었다. 또한 미래에는 마녀의 역할과 의미가 더욱 긍정적으로 변화되리라 예측되며, 본 논문이 페미니즘학적연구 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영어초록

Examining the various visual representations of witches and their intended messages illustrates how the understanding and interpretation of witches has changed over the course of centuries.
The classic concept of the witch as evil and bringer of disaster and disease arises in conjunction with the Reformation. Here the figure of the witch acts as scapegoat for societies misfortune. So called witchcraft – magic spells, curses and incantations are not only a means to explain disaster and misfortune in society but are used to directly project these unto witches themselves, to put them into a role as so called “harbingers of evil”, as bringers of catastrophe. The accusation and incrimination of underprivileged and disadvantaged women as witches was more often a move motivated by politics. This treatment further reinforced the negative image of the witch and was passed on through the ages till modern times without any critical evaluation. Because of this, witches are not seen as transcendental beings of power and magic but are still viewed almost universally as evil and the negative views of the past still prevail. However, almost ironically, witches are portrayed in almost every imaginable medium today and their imagery is consumed as a product of pop culture on a wide scale, be it TV-shows, movies, animation, video games and so on. The image of the witch is even found as a graphic element in advertising and corporate design.
In this paper, the research about the symbolizing process of witches in terms of history and religion was conducted. In addition, the meaning of the witch and its transition process at present was identified.
Furthermore, we classified and analyzed witch characters in popular animations by their internal and external characteristics. Based on this, the change of recognition was figured out from the extraction of the witches’ characteristics on the story and the adjective meaning of colors(I.R.I color image scale) exposed as external aspects.
This paper aims to describe and analyse how the imagery and visual portrayal of witches changed from negative in the past to almost always portrayed in a positive light in popular culture. This change in perception and visual representation can be viewed through the lens of gender and intersectionality. Thus, further focus is put on the role of the women themselves, who, while being stigmatized as witches were eventually able to reject and overthrow these distorted cultural norms and conceptions that aimed to repress mainly the underprivileged and disadvantaged.
In the last part of this paper, the future role and portrayal of witches are discussed with focus on the renewed interest in feminism and women’s rights in the Me Too era.
