수륙재의 의미와 차서의 第一義 고찰 －무위사수륙재의 바른 봉행을 위해 (The Meaning and Sequence of Suryukjae – Focusing on the Suryukjae of Muuisa Temple)

초록

15세기 이후 資福寺이자 名刹인 水陸社의 사격을 가진 강진 무위사 수륙재의 바람직한 봉행을 위해 수륙의 의미와 목적, 設行의 次序 등을 탐색해 보았다.
수륙재는 국가나 왕실 등지에서 수명 장원이나 조상의 명복을 발원하는 의례임은 분명하므로, 무위사의 수륙재는 특정 선령을 위한 추천의 수륙재여야 할 것이다.
무위사에는 결수문, 중례문, 배비문 등 儀文 간행의 역사가 있다. 水陸儀文과作法節次, 천지명양수륙재의범음산보집 등을 참고하여 수륙재 會首와 齋主의 역할을복원하고, 대령의 仙靈을 ‘남쪽 벽에 대왕 왕후 仙駕를 앉히고, 법계 망혼들이 侍衛하여앉히는’ 등 상·중·하단 가운데 宗室位나 설판재자 동참재자의 家親壇은 中位의 格에모시고, 무주고혼은 下位의 壇에 安置해야 한다. 수륙재는 성인과 범부, 승려와 속인을동시에 청해 재식을 올리는 무차재의 성격이나 앉는 자리[座次]는 등위에 따라 구분돼야한다.
어산단이 예경하거나 공양 올릴 때는 상단을 향해서 행해야 하나, 재자에게 법을 설하거나 재회의 진행을 알릴 때는 佛殿 중앙에서 대중을 보고 하거나 壇의 좌우에서 진행해야 한다.

영어초록

This paper explores the meaning and purpose of the “offering for the enlightened and the unenlightened beings” (Suryukjae) and outlines the sequence of its proceedings for the proper performance of the ritual at Gangjin Muuisa temple. Since the 5th century, Muuisa Temple has held the status and prestige of a renowned temple.
It is evident that Suryukjae is a ritual conducted by the state or the royal family to pray for longevity, prosperity, or the repose of ancestors.
Therefore, the Suryukjae at Muuisa Temple is likely dedicated to specific ancestors for commemorative purposes.
Muuisa Temple has a history of publishing ritual texts such as 『Gyeolsumun』 (『結手文』), 『Jungryemun』 (『中禮文』), and 『Baebimun』 (『排備文』). By referring to the Suryuk-Yimun(水陸儀文), Jakbeop-Jeolcha(作 法節次), and CheonjiMyeongyangSuryukjaeUibeomEumSanbojip』, we have restored the roles of the ritual leader (Hoesu) and the offering sponsor (Jaeju) in the Suryukjae ceremony.
In arranging the spirits, such as “seating the king and queen’s chariots on the south wall and having the wandering souls of the Dharma realm attend them,” specific placements should be made among the upper,middle, and lower altars. The Jongsilwi (royal family seats) or Gachindan (the family ancestor altars) of the donors and participants should be placed on the middle altar, while the Mujugohon (ownerless lonely souls) should occupy the lower altar.
Although Suryukjae embodies the spirit of a Muchajae (impartial offering) that invites both saints and unenlightened beings, monks and the faithful alike, to perform the ritual together, Jwacha (the seating order) should be distinguished according to altar levels.
When the Eosandan (ritual performing group) offers homage or offerings, they must perform facing the upper altar. However, when preaching the Dharma to donors or announcing the progress of the ritual, the leader should proceed from the center of the Buddha Hall, facing the audience, or from the left and right sides of the altar.
