무형자산생산성과 가치평가오류에 관한 연구 (Intangible Asset Productivity and Valuation Errors)

초록

본 연구는 무형자산생산성과 가치평가오류에 대한 연구로 무형자산생산성이 높아질수록 가치평가오류가 낮아지는지를 실증하였다.
무형자산생산성이란 무형자산이 효율적으로 작동하여 해당기업의 이익에 크게 기여하는 것을 의미하며 Clausen and Hirth(2016)의 연구를 따라 측정하였다. 종속변수로 사용된 가치평가오류는 해당기업의 내재가치와 실제 시장가치의 차이로 Rhodes－Kropf et al.(2005) 연구를 따라 산출하였다.
본 연구의 분석대상은 2011년부터 2022년까지 KOSPI시장에 상장된 기업들이고, 최종적으로 선정된 표본은 6,915 기업－연도이다. 검증결과 무형자산생산성이 높아질수록 가치평가오류는 낮아지는 것으로 나타났으며 이러한 현상은 과대평가 구간에서 더 크게 나타났다. 즉 무형자산생산성이 증가할수록 해당기업에 대한 해석이 용이하여 정보위험은 줄어들며 특히 과대평가위험을 낮추는 효과가 두드러짐을 의미한다.
이상의 결과를 포함한 본 연구는 다음의 공헌점을 가질 것으로 기대한다. 첫째, 무형자산생산성이 증가할수록 해당기업에 대한 예측이 정확하여 가치평가오류가 감소하는 것을 직접 실증하였다. 즉 가치평가오류라는 개관적 측정치를 통해 무형자산생산성에 따른 정보위험비용을 직접적으로 보여주었다. 둘째, 무형자산생산성이 높을수록 가치평가오류 중 과대평가위험이 낮아지는 것을 보여주었는데 이는 반대로 무형자산생산성이 낮을수록 과대평가위험이 존재함을 의미하므로 투자자들에게 그러한 기업에 투자함에 있어서 신중을 기할 필요성을 시사하였다. 셋째, 자본시장과 관련된 규제기관에게는 가치평가오류를 낮추기 위해 기업들이 보유하는 무형자산에 대한 정보를 공개하는 정책수립의 근거자료가 될 수 있다.

영어초록

This study was a study on intangible asset productivity and valuation errors and verified whether valuation errors decrease as intangible asset productivity increases.
Intangible asset productivity means that intangible assets operate efficiently and contribute significantly to the profits of the company, and was measured according to the study of Clausen and Hirth (2016). The valuation error used as a dependent variable was calculated according to the study of Rhodes－Kropf et al. (2005) as the difference between the market value and intrinsic value of the company.
The analysis targets used in this study are companies listed on KOSPI market from 2011 to 2022, and the final sample is 6,915 firm－years. As a result of the verification, it was found that valuation errors decreased as intangible asset productivity increased, and this result was larger in the overvaluation section. In other words, as intangible asset productivity increases, the information risk decreases as the company becomes easier to interpret, and in particular, the effect of reducing the risk of overvaluation becomes more noticeable.
Considering the above results, this study is expected to have the following contributions. First, it was directly demonstrated that as intangible asset productivity increases, predictions for the company become more accurate and valuation errors decrease. In other words, the information risk cost according to the productivity of intangible assets was directly shown through the value of valuation error. Second, the higher the productivity of intangible assets, the greater the effect of reducing the risk of overvaluation among valuation errors. This means that, conversely, the lower the productivity of intangible assets, the greater the risk of overvaluation, so investors should be cautious when investing in such companies. It suggested the need to take action. Third, it can be used by capital market regulators as a basis for establishing information disclosure policies on intangible assets held by companies in order to reduce valuation errors in the capital market.
