초록

한글문헌에 대한 문화중층론적 연구방법은 문헌자료에 중층적으로 융합되어 있는 여러 가지 문화적 요소를 드러내고, 그 의미를 밝히는 작업이다. 각각의 한글문헌에는 당대의 언어문화와 사회문화, 그리고 그 문헌의 주제와 관련된 특정문화가 중층적으로 축적·융합되어 있으며, 한글문헌은 바로 이러한 문화적 요소의 축적과 융합의 결과물이다. 한글문헌에 대한 문화중층론적 접근은 국어사 연구의 방법론을 확충하는 것이며, 문헌에 대한 새로운 이해를 추구하는 것이다.
지금까지 이루어진 한글문헌 연구에서 충분히 논의되지 못했던 점들이 문화중층론적 방법론에 의해 드러날 수 있다. 한 문헌이 담고 있는 언어현상은 물론 그 문헌을 둘러싼 당대의 사회문화, 그 문헌이 산출된 역사적 배경, 그 문헌에 담긴 주요 내용과 문화적 의미 등을 통합적으로 이해하려는 것이 문화중층론적 연구의 핵심이다. 문헌이 산출된 당시의 언어생활과 사회적 환경, 시대적 배경과 그 특성 등을 포괄적으로 분석함으로써 그 문헌이 지닌 문화적 의의를 밝히는 것이 이 이론의 목적이다. 문화중층론적 연구방법을 한글문헌에 적용함으로써 그 문헌의 언어적 성격과 가치는 물론 문화 자원으로서의 가치를 조명해낼 수 있을 것이다.
본론인 Ⅱ장, Ⅲ장에서는 문화중층론의 개념을 정의하고 구성 요소와 분석방법을 구체적으로 논의하였다. ‘어떤 대상에 문화적인 요소가 중첩되고 융합되어 있는 성질’을 ‘문화중층성(文化重層性)’이라 정의하고, 문화중층성을 분석해내는 이론을 ‘문화중층론’이라 칭하였다. 문화중층론은 ‘언어문화 층위’, ‘사회문화 층위’, ‘특정문화 층위’로 범주화될 수 있으며, 각 층위들은 각각의 세부적인 구성 요소를 포함한다. 문화중층성을 구성하고 있는 각 문화 요소들은 문헌 내·외부에 대한 관찰과 분석을 통해 추출할 수 있으며, 추출된 각 문화 요소들은 문화중층성의 층위 내에서 개별적으로 해석된다. 개별적 해석은 통합적 해석의 기초가 된다. 언어문화, 사회문화, 특정문화 간의 상호 영향 관계에 대한 통합적 해석은 국어사적 지식을 확장시켜줄 수 있다. 더불어 한글문헌에 대한 더 깊은 통찰력을 제공해줄 수 있다.
한글문헌의 문화중층론적 연구는 선행 연구 성과를 기반으로 좀 더 확장된 시야에서 한글문헌에 접근하는 이론을 찾기 위해 고안된 것이다. 한글문헌 자료에 대한 서지학적·국어학적 선행 연구는 문화중층론적 이론의 토대가 된다. 문화중층론적 연구는 선행 연구 성과들을 토대로 한글문헌에 대한 이해를 심화시킬 수 있고, 나아가 국어사의 외연을 사회·역사·문화적 차원으로 확대하여 인접 분야와 소통하는 데 기여할 것이다.

영어초록

A culturally layered theoretical research method for Hangeul literature aims to reveal the diverse cultural components converging in multiple layers in literary documents, and to throw light on their meanings. In each Hangeul literary document, the contemporary linguistic, social, and other theme-specific cultures accumulate and converge in combination. Hangeul literature is thus a product of such accumulation and convergence. The culturally layered theoretical approach to Hangeul Literature will help broaden the horizon of research methodology in the field of Korean linguistic history, and to pursue a new understanding of Hangeul literature.
The culturally layered theoretical method allows for insight into issues that have not yet been discussed satisfactorily in existing studies of Hangeul literature. The key point of a culturally layered theoretical study is to understand as a whole not only linguistic phenomena contained in literature, but also the contemporary social culture, the historical background against which such literature was produced, and the cultural impact of the main contents of the literary document. The purpose of this theory is to unearth the cultural meaning of literature by analyzing the document for traces of contemporary linguistic life, social environment, and historical background, along with a comprehensive analysis of its characteristics. It becomes possible to illuminate Hangeul literature as a valuable cultural resource as well as a linguistic one by applying the culturally layered theoretical research method.
The main chapter defines the concept of culturally layered theoretical research, and discusses in detail its component elements and analysis methods. The characteristic of “multiple cultural elements overlapping and fusing within a single object” is named “cultural layering,” and the approach which looks into and analyzes this phenomenon is called the “culturally layered theoretical method.” This methodology can be categorized into the strata of linguistic culture, social culture, and theme-specific culture, and these layers each include smaller component units. The cultural elements that form the attribute of cultural layering can be extracted by observation and analysis of both the interior and exterior of literary documents. These extracted elements are then each interpreted individually within their strata, the results of which become the basis for an integrated interpretation. An integrated approach on the interplay of linguistic, social, and theme-specific cultures will expand our knowledge of the history of the Korean language, and will also lend a deeper understanding of Hangeul literature.
This culturally layered theoretical approach to Hangeul literature was devised in the search for a theory that approaches Hangeul literature from a broader perspective based on the accomplishments of existing studies. Previous bibliographical/philological and linguistic studies on Hangeul literature form the basis for the theory of cultural layering. The culturally layered theoretical method intensifies our understanding of Hangeul literature. Furthermore, it will contribute to scholarly communication with adjacent fields by extending the academic reach of the history of Korean language to social, historical, and cultural dimensions.
