무성유정론(無性有情論)의 쟁점과 그 철학적 함축 - 원측(圓測)의 이해에 근거하여 - (Controversial Points on Agotrasattva and Their Philosophical Implication: Based on Woncheuk’s View)

초록

본 논문은 원측(圓測, 613~696)의 전승과 해석에 근거하여 불교 종성론(種性論)의 중층성 또는 복합성을 밝히고 그 철학적 함축을 음미하려는 시도이다. 원측에 의하면, 일승가(一乘家)는 무성유정에 대한 구원의 희망을 끝내 버리지 않는 붓다의 대비심에 주목하고 있는 반면, 삼승가(三乘家)의 관점에는 무성유정의 구원 가능성에 대한 붓다의 희망과 절망이 교차되어 있다. 양 진영 간의 화쟁(和諍)을 시도했던 원측 자신은 일승가의 입장에 서서 무성유정의 구원 가능성에 대해 충분히 긍정하면서도 동시에 삼승가를 따라 영원히 구원 받을 수 없는 중생의 존재를 암묵적으로 인정하는 모호하고 다면적인 관점을 지니고 있으며, 이는 『능가경(楞伽經)』과 『대승장엄경론(大乘莊嚴經論)』의 설법을 모두 진리로 받아들여야 하는 고승의 ‘해석학적 곤경(hermeneutical predicament)’과 관련이 있다. 무성유정의 구원 가능성에 대한 위의 세 대답 모두 결국 모호하며 불완전한데, 필자는 이 점을 붓다를 악의 속박에 갇혀 고통스러워하는 중생의 현실을 냉철하게 직시하는 지혜의 눈과 그렇더라도 중생에 대한 구원을 포기하지 않는 그 내면의 무한한 자비심을 동시에 가지고 있는 존재로 본 불교사상가의 붓다 인식의 중층성과 연관된 것으로 읽어 보았다. 붓다가 불교의 이상적 인간형이라는 점에 동의한다면, 불교 구원론의 이러한 중층성은 다름 아닌 불교사상가 또는 고통으로부터의 자유를 추구하는 인간 일반의 자기 인식의 복합성과 연관되어 있다고도 해석 가능할 것이다.

영어초록

This paper is a trial of exposition on the ambiguity or complexity of Buddhist Gotra Theory and appreciation of its philosophical implication, based on the tradition and interpretation of Woncheuk(圓測, 613~696). For this, supposing that Gotra Theory is textiled both by hierarchical view on actual differences among gotras and positive appreciation of the same ideal of nirvāṇa among them transcending their differences, I exposed the view on agotrasattva of Three Vehicle lineage thinkers(三乘家) who emphasize actual differences among Sentient Beings or Practitioners, One Vehicle lineage thinkers(一乘家) who still appreciate the unity among them regardless of their differences, and Woncheuk as negotiator who tried to reconcile the conflict between both lineage thinkers. According to Woncheuk’s tradition, One Vehicle lineage thinkers are featured by appreciating Buddha’s Great Compassion which never give up the hope for salvation of agotrasattva. On the contrary, Three Vehicle lineage thinkers stand the ambiguity between Buddha’s hope and desperation for salvation of agotrasattva. And as negotiator of two conflicting thinking, Woncheuk on one hand appreciated the possibility of salvation of agotrasattva supported by One Vehicle lineage thinkers, but on the other hand approved the existence of ‘real’ agotrasattva who never could attain Buddhahood mentioned by Three Vehicle lineage thinkers. I believe his ambiguous and multifaced view on agotrasattva is connected with “hermeneutical predicament” of Buddhist thinkers who must accept all kinds of the seemingly conflicting Teachings of Buddhist canons as Buddha’s Truth. For me, these three answers to the possibility of agotrasattva’s attaining Buddhahood seem to be ambiguous and imperfect since none could present clear explain about the contradiction between Compassion and Wisdom. But from a philosophical point of view it could be read that Buddha himself has been understood by Buddhist thinkers as multifaceted personality who have both Wisdom’s Eye to reality of sentient beings which are suffered by the bondage of evils and Compassionate Heart for the salvation of those sentient beings. I believe these features of Buddha are connected with the self-conception of Buddhist thinkers or human beings themselves pursuing the liberation from sufferings or bondage of desire.
