이제마의 격치사물론 (Lee Jema's Theory of Investigating and Extending Affairs and Things)

초록

이 논문의 주된 목적은 이제마의 격치사물론을 검토하여 성리학과 다른 새로운 격물치지 논의를 전개한 그의 의도가 무엇인지를 찾는 것이다. 이를 위해 필자는 유가의 격물치지 논의를 살핀 다음, 이제마가 시도한 격물치지의 재구성과 사단의 재해석, 그리고 격치사물의 전개 내용을 검토하여 전통적인 해석과 본질적으로 다른 점이 무엇인가를 분석했다. 격물치지는 송대 이후 다양한 시각에서 해석되지만 초월에 의거하여 논의하는 공통점이 있다. 그러나 이제마는 경험의 관점에서 격물치지를 격치사물로 재구성하고 사단을 사심신물 사단으로 재해석하여 격치사물론을 전개했다. 그는 8조목을 대/소 원/근의 일로, 사단을 심신에 갖추어진 도덕 판단과 행위의 능력으로 이해했다. 그리고 욕구를 선/불선의 원천으로 이해하고 악행을 균형을 잃어버리는 마음으로 해명함으로써 선악 판단의 객관성을 균형을 잃지 않은 공공성에서 찾았다. 이것은 격치사물론의 논의 방식이 경험에 근거하면서도 객관적 논의 방식을 추구했다는 것을 의미한다. 따라서 격치사물론의 논의 방식은 초월적 구도를 벗어나 인식 가능한 경험적 구도로 전환했다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 사실에 근거하면 경험에 기초한 이제마의 격치사물론은 도덕에 대한 새로운 해명의 가능성을 제공한 것으로 평가할 수 있을 것이다. 나아가 사상의학 이론이 격치사물론에 기초한 것은 검증 가능한 의학이론을 모색하기 위한 것으로 해석할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The main aim of this article is to study Lee Jema's theory of 'investigating and extending affairs and things' and therefore find why he proposed a new idea, which is different from a Neo- Confucian perspective. For this purpose, I first analyzed the Neo Confucian theory of 'investigating things and extending knowledge', Lee Jema's reconstruction of it and reinterpretation of the Four Beginnings, and theorization of 'investigating and extending affairs and things.' I accordingly tried to show how Lee Jema's ideas are distinguished from the traditional understanding. 'The investigation of things' and 'extension of knowledge' had been understood in different ways since the Song period, and are interpreted from a perspective of transcendence in its nature. However, Lee Jema reconstructed the theory as 'investigating and extending affairs and things' depending on our experience, and reinterpreted the Four Beginnings as 'affair- mind-body-thing' in developing his idea of ‘investigating and extending affairs and things.' In Lee Jema's ideas, the eight items of the Daxue is related to the big/the small, and the far/the near. In addition, the Four Beginnings are our faculty to judge and act morally, and our desires are the source of good and bad. Our immoral acts are a state of mind to lose our equilibrium. Therefore, Lee Jema found the objectivity of good and bad from a common ground for varied human experience. In this sense, his theory of 'investigating and extending affairs and things' can be said to adopt an objective way of argument on the basis of human experience. Therefore, his theory breaks from the traditional transcendental framework and is changed into an experiential one. On the basis of these facts, Lee Jema's theory of 'investigating and extending affairs and things' can be said to show a new possibility to explore morality. Moreover, we can understand that Lee Jema based his theory of sasang medicine on 'investigating and extending affairs and things' in order to pursue a verifiable medical theory.
