초록

이 글은 학계에 소개되지 않은 서강대학교 로욜라도서관 소장, 최부(崔溥, 1404 -1504)의 『금남표해록(錦南漂海錄)』 한글본을 검토하고, 이 자료의 특성과 가치를 밝히는 데 목적을 둔다.
그동안 최부의 『금남표해록』은 국내외 많은 학자들의 관심을 받았고, 그 결과 다양한 연구가 이루어졌다. 국내에서는 역사학자들의 연구와 문학연구자들의 연구가 있었고, 동아시아 학자들 또한 이 자료에 관심을 갖고 많은 연구를 진행했다. 그러나 이 책을 한글로 번역한 한글본 『금남표해록』에 대해서는 이렇다 할 논의가 없는 상황이다. 그 이유는 지금까지 학계에 알려진 한글본은 19세기에 필사된 국립중앙도서관본 한 종뿐이기 때문이다. 이로 인하여 최부의 『금남표해록』은 한문(漢文)을 자유자재로 읽을 수 있었던 양반사대부 계층을 제외하고, 국내에서 널리 읽히지 못했을 것이라는 주장이 정설(定說)처럼 되어 있다.
그러나 이번에 새로 발굴한 서강대본 『금남표해록』을 보면 이러한 기존의 주장을 재고(再考)할 수 있다. 서강대본은 기존에 알려진 19세기 한글 번역본보다 한 세기 앞선 18세기에 무렵에 필사된 것으로 보인다. 그리고 서강대본은 원전인 한문본 『금남표해록』과 대조해보면 축약번역본임이 확인된다. 중요한 점은 이때 필사자가 직접 번역했던 것이 아니라 선행했던 한글본을 가져다가 재필사한 본이란 사실이다. 이는 『금남표해록』은 한글본이 다양한 형태로 일찍부터 존재했었고, 여러 사람들에게 필사되어 읽혔던 정황을 보여준다.
새로 발굴한 서강대본의 특색은 원전 대부분의 내용을 생략하고 특정 부분만 번역했다는 점이다. 자세히 번역한 것은 아버지의 부음을 듣고 제주도를 떠난 뒤, 풍랑을 만나 표류하고 해적을 만나는 등의 모진 고생에 대한 이야기와 태주부(台州府) 임해현(臨海縣) 우두(牛頭) 앞 바다에 도착하기까지이다.
그밖에 강남과 강북에 대한 세밀한 풍광의 묘사, 경유한 지역에 대한 보다 구체적인 지리와 문화정보, 중국 각 지역에서 만났던 관원(官員)과 문사(文士)들의 대화 등은 모두 생략했다.
이러한 면들을 보면 한글본으로 최부의 『금남표해록』을 읽었던 사람들의 관심은 최부의 극적인 구조와 무사히 조선으로 귀국하는데 있었고, 그 밖의 중국의 역사, 지리, 문화에 대한 것들에는 관심을 덜 가졌음을 추정해 볼 수 있다. 이는 한문으로 원문을 읽을 수 있었던 독자와 그렇지 않은 독자들을 구분할 수 있는 근거가 될 수 있으며, 당대 한글로 번역해서 읽었던 독자들의 관심과 수준을 알려주는 중요한 지표가 된다. 이 글에서는 이러한 서강대본의 특성, 내용들을 다루고 서술했다.

영어초록

This study aims to review the Korean version of ‘Geumnampyoaerok’ of Choi-Bu, which has not been introduced to academia and is kept in Loyola Library of Sogang University, and find out its characteristics and value.
‘Geumnampyohaerok’ of Choi-Bu has been received lots of attention from domestic and overseas scholars and it led to various studies. In Korea, there have been studies of historians and of literature researchers, and East Asian scholars have also been interested in this material and have studied it. However, there have been no discussions on the translated Korean version of ‘Geumnampyohaerok’. The reason is that there has been only one version that was known to academia, the transcribed version of the 19th century, kept in the National Library of Korea. This led to the widespread belief that ‘Geumnampyohaerok’ of Choi-Bu was read only by the nobility that could read Chinese letters, not by the general public.
By reviewing ‘Geumnampyohaerok’ of Sogang University, however, we can reconsider the existing belief. First of all, the Sogang University version was transcribed in the 18th century, a century earlier than the existing Korean version of the 19th century. Also, when compared to the original Chinese version of ‘Geumnampyohaerok’, it can be found that the Sogang University version is an abbreviated translation. It can also be found that the person who transcribed it did not translate it himself, but used an already-translated version and re-transcirbed it. Based on this fact, it can be seen that, contrary to existing belief, there were various types of Korean versions which were read by many people.
The unique feature of the Sogang University version is that it left many parts out and translated only specific parts. What was translated in detail was about the hardship that the character went through when leaving Jeju Island, being caught in storm, and meeting pirates, and the part leading to his arrival to the Wudu Sea. Other than that, it skipped other parts such as the description of the landscape of Gangnam and Gangbuk, specific geographic and cultural information about the travel stops, and conversations with the officials and literary men whom he met in China.
Based on this, it can be inferred that those who read the Korean version of ‘Geumnampyohaerok’ by Choi-Bu were interested in the dramatic structure of his travel and his safe return to Joseon, not so much in the history, geography, and culture of China. This can be the basis that will distinguish the readers of original Chinese version from other readers, and it serves as an important indication that shows the interest and level of the readers who read translated Korean version. Those are what were discussed and described in this paper.
