애국계몽기 몽유록과 힘의 윤리 (Mongyurok in Period of Patriotic Enlightment and Ethics of Power)

초록

본고에서는 애국계몽기(1905~1910)의 몽유록을 통하여 당대에 널리
유포된 이념을 개별 작품에서 어떻게 받아들여 내면화하고 여기에 대응하는
논리를 전개하는지를 검토하였다. 애국계몽기에는 사회진화론에서 비롯된
현실세계를 움직이는 원리에 대한 인식이 사회적으로 널리 퍼져 있었으므
로, 본고에서는 이를 현실적인 차원에서 ‘힘의 윤리’로 규정하고 그에 대한
대안과 전망을 논리적 차원에서 점검하였다. 본고에서 주로 검토한 작품은
<만하몽유록>, <금수회의록>, <몽견제갈량>, <지구성미래몽>의 넷인데, 이는
비교적 장편에 속하면서 당대 몽유록의 특징적 면모를 갖추고 있다는 이유
에서였다.
작품에 대한 분석을 통해 <만하몽유록>과 <금수회의록>이 ‘힘의 윤리’를
부정하면서 새로운 대안을 제시하고자 했음을 밝혔다. 두 작품은 ‘천명’과
‘천리’로 대표되는 이념체계를 내세움으로써 비정상 상태인 ‘힘의 윤리’를
부정하는 근거를 마련하고자 했다는 공통점을 갖는다. 새로운 이념에 대한
적극적 대응으로서의 의미를 지님에도 불구하고, 이들의 논리는 인간의 능
동적인 활동과 국제 관계에 대한 적극적인 개입을 제한하는 것이었다는 점
에서 한계를 갖는다고 지적할 수 있다.
이에 비해 <몽견제갈량>과 <지구성미래몽>은 ‘힘의 윤리’를 부정할 수 없는 원리로 받아들이면서 현실을 극복하는 전망을 제시하고자 했다고 할 수 있다. 두 작품에서는 ‘연대론’과 ‘지식의 향상’을 구체적인 방안으로 제시했다. 이들 작품의 현실 분석과 현실 타개를 위한 의지는 주목할 만하지만, 이들이 제시한 방안은 논리적 · 현실적 차원에서 한계를 갖는 것이었음도 부정할 수 없다.

영어초록

In this paper, I surveyed on the ideology of the mongyurok in period of patriotic
enlightment (1905~1910). Works mainly scrutinized in this paper were Manhamongyurok (晩河夢遊錄), Proceedings of the Council of Birds and beasts, Monggyonjegallyang (夢見諸葛亮), Dream of future earth.
I selected the ‘Social Darwinism’ as main ideology to discuss this theme. Because it had been the acute problem between that period, and it ushered the change of world view. But ‘Social Darwinism’ is a solid subject, so in literary works debate on its reception was not rarely expressed. So for the efficient discussion, I focused on ‘Ethics of Power’ instead of ‘Social Darwinism.’ As a matter of fact ‘Ethics of Power’ is more useful concept and subject in real life.
From the analysis I conclued that Manhamongyurok (晩河夢遊錄) and Proceedings of the Council of Birds and beasts had something in common. That was the rejection of ‘Ethics of Power.’ And these two works were the same in the point to endeavor to suggest alternative ideology. The heaven or the god’s will was that alternative ideology. But in spite of the effort, their project was not successful. Because the presentation of heaven or the god’s will obstructed conative human activity. And the participation in the argument on international relationship were restricted indeed.
On the contrary the ideology expressed in Monggyonjegallyang (夢見諸葛亮) and Dream of future earth was similar to the conclusion of ‘Social Darwinism’ and ‘Ethics of Power.’ Because these two works accepted that ideology as a discipline which ruled the real world. But these two works accepted that discipline without any resistance.
Monggyonjegallyang (夢見諸葛亮) presented the alliance of the same ethnic group as a way of overcome. As the same method, Dream of future earth presented the growth of knowledge in the national dimension. But I could not draw a positive conclusion of their prospect. Because the limitation of these method was obvious. From the logical and historical analysis, I concluded that these ways were not successful. But the effort to create the ways to overcome the troublesome principle was worth to estimating fairly.
The subject discussed in this paper is a severe problem in present time also. So for the more advanced study, researching new ways to overcome the principle produced by ‘Social Darwinism.’ For example works practiced by Shin Che-ho, Han Yong-un were cases of a significant accomplishment. Because those were attempts to overcome the dominant influencing power of limitless competition between all human races without any dogmatic ideology in some sense.
