철기유물로 본 전북지역 가야의 교류 (The exchange of Gaya in Jeonbuk are examined based on iron artifacts)

초록

최근 남원, 장수지역에 분포한 가야유적을 중심으로 심도 있는 발굴조사가 이루어지고 있어 이 지역 가야 정치체의 성격이 점차 구체화되고 있다. 특히 이 지역에는 남원 월산리·두락리, 장수 삼봉리·동촌리 등 총 390여기의고분이 분포하며, 수장층 고분을 중심으로 다양한 종류의 위세품, 토기와 함께 철기유물이 다량 출토되었다.
그동안 남원, 장수지역의 가야유적을 단순히 대가야의 확장에 따른 결과물로 규정하고, 유적에서 출토된 철기유물 역시 대가야에서 일방적으로 파급된 것으로 인식하였다. 그러나 발굴조사를 통해 대가야 이외에 다른 주변국과의 관련성을 찾아볼 수 있는 철기유물이 출토되어 연구의 필요성이 제시되었다. 따라서 본고는 남원, 장수 가야 고분에서 출토된 마구와 철제무기를 가야, 백제 신라 등 주변지역 출토품과 비교·검토를 통해 상호 연관성을 살펴봄으로써 이 지역과 주변국 간의 교류관계와 의미 등을 살펴보는데 있다.
연구결과 남원에서 출토된 철기유물은 대가야뿐만 아니라 백제, 소가야, 신라, 왜와의 관련성이 있어 주변국의철기문화를 다양하게 수용해 철기를 제작하거나 이 지역의 철기문화를 주변지역에 전파했던 것으로 파악된다. 특히 갑주와 철촉에서 왜와의 연관성이 찾아지는 것으로 볼 때, 남원의 가야 정치체는 지리적 이점을 이용하여 철기문화 전파에 한 축을 담당했던 것으로 추정된다. 장수는 도굴로 인해 철기유물의 수량이 많지 않아 그 실상을 면밀히 파악할 수 없지만 남원보다 대가야의 영향력이 높았던 것으로 파악되며, 지역성을 보이는 철기가 출토되기도 하였다. 타 지역에서 출토되지 않는 희소한 철기가 남원, 장수를 중심으로 집중 출토되는 것으로 보아 당시 이 지역가야는 다양한 용도의 철기를 생산할 수 있었던 기술을 보유했던 것으로 추정된다. 가야 고분에서 출토된 다양한철기유물들은 당시 우리 조상들이 남긴 첨단기술의 산물로 이 지역의 역사를 복원·연구하는데 있어 중요한 열쇠가 될 것으로 기대된다.

영어초록

Recently, as the excavation work of the Gaya ruins located in Namwon and Jangsu is being conducted in depth, the characteristic of Gaya political group in the region is gradually being revealed. In particular, around 390 ancient tombs are located in Wolsan-ri, Durak-ri in Namwon and Sambong-ri, Dongchon-ri in Jangsu. In this region, a plenty of iron ruins along with various kinds of articles representing its power and earthenware potteries were discovered in the old tombs.
Up to now, the Gaya ruins in Jangsu has been simply recognized as a output derived from the expansion of Daegaya force and it is widely accepted that the excavated iron ruins are spreaded from Daegaya in one-way direction. But a necessity of a study is suggested, because the iron ruins to imply the relation with other neighboring countries apart from Daegaya is unearthed. Thus, the study examines the cultural exchange between this region and the neighboring nations by comparing the harness and the iron weapons discovered at the Gaya ancient tomb in Namwon and Jangsu with the articles unearthed in the neighboring regions such as Gaya, Baekje and Silla in terms of interconnection. In addition, the paper looks into the meaning of the iron article and ownership aspect according to hierarchy by examining the burial aspect of the harness and the iron weapons.
The findings show that the iron ruins unearthed in Namwon seems to be connected with Baekje, SoGaya, Silla and Wae, people who made the iron ruins in Namwon accepted widely the iron culture from the neighboring countries and made their own iron articles or spreaded their iron culture to the neighboring countries. Particularly, judging from the trace of the connection with Wae found in armors and iron points, the Gaya political group in Namwon is presumed to play a role in spreading the iron culture as one axis by capitalizing on their geo-graphical advantage. We cannot exactly understand the real state of Jangsu ruins owing to the insufficient iron ruins caused by tomb theft. However, it seems that influence from Daegaya toward Jangsu is stronger than Namwon. The iron articles to show the regional characteristics are not discovered in the region. Judging from the fact that the rare iron articles never discovered in other regions are excavated intensively in Namwon and Jangsu, at that time, Gaya in the region is assumed to possess a technology to be able to produce the various iron articles.
The diverse iron articles discovered in the Gaya ancient tomb were then cutting-edge products that our ancestors left to us, thus it is expected that these ruins serve as a important key in restoring the regional history.
