애니메이션의 자연물 캐릭터라이징 연구 <엘리멘탈> ‘물’의 상상력을 중심으로 (A Study on Characterizing Natural Characters in Animation Focusing on the Imagination of ‘Water’ in )

초록

애니메이션에서 물의 상상력은 시각 영역을 넘어 내러티브와 장면의 분위기를 이끌어 가고 있다. 애니메이션 <엘리멘탈>에 등장하는 ‘웨이드’는 물의 원소로 이루어진 캐릭터로서 자연과 인간 사이에 내재하는보편성과 물리적 속성을 활용해 물의 캐릭터라이징에 성공했다. 이에 본 연구에서는 가스통 바슐라르의 물질적상상력 이론에 입각해 애니메이션의 캐릭터라이징에서 중요한 내러티브, 이미지, 움직임 차원에서 물의 의인화에 필요한 속성들을 도출하고, 이를 통해 물의 상상력이 적용된 웨이드 캐릭터가 등장하는 장면들의 연출 기법을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 첫째, 내러티브의 관점에서 웨이드는 흐르는 물의 순환적 속성을 바탕으로 화합의 관계성을 확장시켰다. 웨이드의 유연한 성격, 긍정적인 태도, 외유내강의 특성은 이러한 물의 물질적 상상력을 통해갈등과 문제 해결에 지속적인 실마리를 제공했다. 또한 정화와 치유의 능력, 변화의 전환점으로 나눔과 베풂, 화합의 관계성이 선순환되어 내러티브를 이끌어 갔다. 둘째, 이미지의 관점에서 웨이드는 물의 투명한 속성을 적용해 시각적인 물의 아름다움으로 캐릭터의 가시성을 높여 줬다. 이미지에 활력을 주는 빛의 흐름과 변화, 특정상황을 강조하는 굴절의 왜곡, 자연의 친근함과 동적인 느낌을 부각시켜 주는 곡선의 캐릭터 형태, 물의 심미성을 더해 주는 물방울 모양의 머리는 물의 이러한 속성을 표면적으로 부각시켜 줬다. 셋째, 움직임의 차원에서 상황에 따라 달라지는 웨이드의 행동 반응을 흐르는 물과 맑은 물의 상상력을 결합해 물의 거대한 에너지를 시각화함으로써 관객에게 보는 즐거움을 선사했다. 흐르는 물의 울렁임과 맑은 물의 수용적인 결합으로 일으킨 거대한 파도와 폭포수처럼 쏟아내는 눈물은 장면에 생동감을 주었고, 그릇의 형태와 물질이나 물체, 온도에 따라 달라지는 다양하고 유연한 움직임의 행동 반응은 역동적인 상상력을 자극하고 풍부한 시각적 즐거움을 제공했다.

영어초록

In animation, the imagination of water goes beyond the visual realm and leads the narrative and mood of the scenes. The character ‘Wade’ in the Pixar animation “Elemental,” comprising the water element, successfully characterized water by utilizing the universality and physical properties inherent in nature and humanity. In this study, based on Gaston Bachelard's material imagination theory, the attributes necessary for the personification of water in terms of narrative, image, and movement, which are important in characterizing animation, were derived, and through this, the production techniques of scenes in which Wade characters with the imagination of water appeared were analyzed. As a result, First, from a narrative perspective, Wade first expanded the relationship of harmony based on the circulatory properties of flowing water. Wade's flexible personality, positive attitude, and characteristic of being strong on the inside while gentle on the outside provided continuous clues for conflict resolution and problem-solving through this material imagination of water. Moreover, the abilities of purification and healing, sharing and giving as a crosspoint of change, and the relationship of harmony circulating in a positive cycle led the narrative. Second, from the image perspective, Wade enhanced visibility of the character through visual beauty of water by applying transparent properties of water. from an image perspective, the light flow and change that vitalize the image, the distortion of refraction that emphasizes a specific situation, the character form of curves that highlights the amicability and dynamic sense of nature, and the droplet-shaped heads that add to the aesthetic beauty of water, all accentuate these attributes of water on the surface. Third, in terms of motion, this animation aesthetically entertained viewers as it visualized the immense energy of water by integrating the depiction of flowing and clear water, to portray Wade’s reactions that varied by the situation. The pouring tears and huge waves, caused by the combination of flowing water’s undulation and the clear water’s receptivity enlivened the scenes. Also, the various and flexible movement responses altering by the jug’s form, material, object, and temperature stimulated dynamic imagination and enriched visual enjoyment.
