초록

이 글의 주된 목적은 도덕적 탐구의 중심축을 탈신체적 이성에서 몸(신체)의 인지적 기제인 서사적 상상력으로 전환해서 서양 윤리학 전통이 이끌어 왔던 도덕적 근본주의의 가정을 비켜서는 도덕적 탐구가 오늘날 왜 필요한지를 검토하고, 이야기가 어떻게 자연주의 윤리학으로 바뀔 수 있는지를 살피려는 것이다. 근본주의적인 「도덕법칙」 통속이론의 상반된 견해는 도덕적 객관주의와 도덕적 상대주의다. 객관주의와 상대주의는 「도덕법칙」이라고 부르는 것의 배후에 자리 잡고 있는 상상력의 가정을 배척한다. 객관주의는 상상력을 순전히 주관적일 뿐이며, 따라서 보편적 법칙들의 도덕성 안에는 어떤 자리도 없다고 가정함으로써 몸에서 발생하는 도덕적 상상력의 빛을 가려왔다. 상대주의는 「도덕법칙」은 특정한 문화적 맥락에 따라 상대적 혹은 우연적이기에 상상력이 있다면 오직 어떤 규칙에도 지배받지 않는 무제약적 혹은 이성에 적대적이며, 도덕적 보편성을 훼손한다고 간주함으로써 도덕적 상상력의 이해를 거부했다. 따라서 절대/상대주의적 도덕은 지성적인 도덕적 탐구의 열쇠가 상상적인 과정을 통해 만들어져 가는 도덕적 숙고 혹은 대화의 가능성이라는 이해를 불가능하게 만들었다. 이러한 불가능성은 도덕적 인지의 상상적 과정을 수행할 수 있는 이야기에 의해 적절히 해명되고 수정될 수 있다. 이야기는 신체의 상상적 종합 활동을 통해 창발되며, 우리는 이야기를 통해 사건들의 시간적 과정 안에서 도덕적 이해의 정합성을 제공받는다. 이야기는 도덕적 자아와 행위의 시간적 차원을 파악하는 포괄적인 상상적 기제이기 때문이다. 이러한 이야기는 상상적 구조화 장치이자 인지적 구조를 갖는 영상도식이 해명한다. 영상도식은 몸을 통해 발생하는 비명제적/선개념적인 구조틀로 구체적인 대상을 식별하는 데 개입되는 시간의 소수적인 패턴이기 때문이다. 이렇듯 이야기와 영상도식은 탈신체화된 이성이 아닌 신체화된 상상력을 통해 도덕성을 규명하고 있기 때문에 자연주의적이다. 결국 자연주의적 시각인 신체적/시간적/상상적/인지적 경험인 이야기와 영상도식으로 조망되는 도덕적 이해는 보편적 「도덕법칙」과는 다른 실제 인간 존재에 부합하는 자연주의 윤리학의 가능성을 열어 준다. 이러한 관점으로 재구성되는 자연주의 윤리학은 객관주의/상대주의라는 고전적인 도덕철학적 문제들을 일정정도 완화시키고 동시에 상상력에 의해 관찰되고, 건설되며, 해결 가능한 현실적인 도덕적 본성에 대한 새로운 논의의 길을 열 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The main purpose of this article is to review why it is necessary today to engage in ethical research that deviates from the assumption of moral fundamentalism that has been led by the tradition of ethics in the west by converting the central axis of ethical research from the disembodied rationale to the narrative imagination as the cognitive mechanism of body, and further takes a look at how a story could be shifted into naturalistic morality. The contrasting view on fundamental 「moral law」 folk theory would be the moral objectivism and moral relativism. Objectivism and relativism exclude imaginary assumptions that have been established in the background of so-called 「moral law」. Objectivism assumes that the imagination is purely subjective, and therefore, there is no place within the morality of the general principles that it has covered the light of moral imagination generated from the body. Relativism deems that the 「moral law」 is relative or contingent following specific cultural context that, if there is any imagination, it would be unrestrictive without control under any rules and it contrasts with its rationale and encroaches on the possibility of moral generosity by refusing the understanding of moral imagination. Therefore, the objectivism/relativism moral has made the understanding of moral consideration or dialogue to make the key of intellectual and moral research impossible. This type of impossibility may appropriately be described and amended by the narrative that may carry out the imaginary process of moral cognition. A narrative is generated through the comprehensive imaginary activities of body and we are provided with the conformity of moral understanding within the process of time for incidents. This is attributable to the fact that the narrative is a comprehensive imaginary mechanism to find out the time level of ethical self-ego and conduct. This type of narrative explains the image schemes with an imaginary systematic structure system as well as cognitive structure. This is attributable to the fact that the image scheme is the directly generated non-propositional and pre-conceptive structural frame through physical activities and it is the minor pattern of time involved in identifying the concrete subject. As such, the narrative and image scheme would be naturalistic since the moral is clarified through the physical imagination, not the disembodied rationale. Consequently, the moral consideration defined in the narrative and image scheme with the naturalistic view in physical, timely, imaginary, and cognitive experience opens up the possibility of naturalistic ethics that conforms to the actual humanistic existence that is different from the general 「moral law」. The naturalistic ethics restructured with such a point of view moderates the classic moral and philosophical issues in objectivism/relativism to a certain level, and at the same time, it is observed and constructed by imagination, and may open up the path of new discourse on the soluble realistic moral intrinsic nature of human beings.
