애니메이션 <소울>에 나타난 과도 공간과 신화적 상상력 (The Transitional Space and Mythological Imagination Study in the Animation )

초록

본 연구는 디즈니 픽사(Disney-PIXAR)에서 제작된 애니메이션 <소울>을 통하여 영혼이미지와 상징성들을 알아보고, 현실세계와 가상세계로 구축된 과도(過渡)공간을 통해 등장인물들의 변화와 리미널리티(liminality)를 수행하는 과정을 신화적 상상력으로 조망해 보는데 목적이 있다. 신화는 실존적, 사회적, 심리적 문제들에 대해 성찰할 수단을 제공해주는 상징적 도구로, 고대로부터 인간의 삶을 지탱시키고 위로해 왔다. 때로는 순응하는 방식으로, 때로는 일탈을 꾀하며 우리를 일깨우고 희망의 메시지를 전해왔다. 애니메이션 <소울>은 신화적 상상력으로 해석 가능한 상징과 이미지들을 상당수 포함하고 있다. 현실세계와 영혼의 대칭적 공간에서 일어나는 등장인물들은 평범하지 않은 과도의 상황을 겪음으로써 그들에게 있어서 이 공간은 또 다른 정체성을 형성하게 되는 경계와 이행의 공간이 된다. 이는 상징인류학자 빅터 터너가 말한 리미널리티를 수행하는 과도공간으로 수세기동안 형성되어온 통과의례 신화와도 구조적 동질성을 가진다.
<소울>에서 보여주는 의미론적 시퀀스는 평범한 음악선생으로 살아가던 조 가드너와 22번 영혼이 ‘불꽃’의 의미를 감지하고 변화를 일으키는 과정을 통해, 물질과 정보의 홍수 속에서 삶의 불꽃을 발견하지 못하고 정체되고 있는 현대인들의 삶에 역동적인 에너지를 일으키게 하는 효과를 내포한다. 또한 이 영혼이 특정한 인물만이 아닌 인류 공통의 영혼이라는 점에서 인간 삶의 근원적인 물음으로 돌아가는 인문학적 성찰로써 유의미하다.
불꽃의 의미는 관점에 따라 다각도로 해석 가능하지만 씨앗이 발아되어 성장하고 다시 자연으로 돌아가는 대지의 순환과정과도 같은 상상력이며, 가치 있는 어떤 것을 목적함으로써 달성되는 최적 경험으로 경험적 상상력이다. 또한 고여 있지 않고 역동함으로써 정합적인 것을 깨는 탈합치적 상상력이다. 신화가 말하는 금기는 폭발적인 것을 제어하는 정합적인 것이지만 그것을 깨는 것은 균열이며 역동적인 힘이다. 이로써 삶과 예술은 일직선상에 있지 않고 정합적이지 않다는 것을 깨닫게 된다. 삶은 타인과의 관계를 형성하며 인간이 통제하지 못하는 상황들을 극복하고 내적 경험을 통해 삶의 매 순간을 즐길 수 있는 용기이다. 이런 것들은 삶의 목적을 향해 나아가는 길이며 불꽃을 찾는 일이다. 신화가 오늘날까지 살아있듯이 인간은 수없이 많은 환생을 거쳐 살아있다. <소울>이 전하는 메시지는 거대한 우주로부터 순환되는 영혼의 모습과 삶의 가치와 의미를 추구할 용기와 희망이며 이는 신화가 전하는 메시지와 다름 아니다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to recognize soul images and symbolism through the animation “Soul” produced by Disney-PIXAR and to view the changes and reflections of characters in spaces built into the real and virtual worlds with mythical imagination.
Myths are symbolic tools that provide a means to reflect on existential, social, and psychological problems, and have supported and comforted human life since ancient times. Sometimes in a compliant way, sometimes trying to deviate, awakening us and delivering a message of hope. The animation “Soul” contains many symbols and images that can be interpreted with mythical imagination. Characters occurring in symmetrical spaces between the real world and the soul go through unusual excessive situations, making this space a space of transition that forms another identity for them. This becomes a transitional space that performs the limitations mentioned by symbolic anthropologist Victor Turner, thereby forming structural homogeneity with myths that have been formed for centuries.
The meaningful sequence shown in “Soul” creates dynamic energy in the lives of modern people who are stagnant without discovering the sparks of life in the flood of materials and information through the process of Joe Gardner and soul 22, who lived as ordinary music teachers, detect and change the meaning of ‘flame’. In addition, in that this soul is not only a specific person, but a common soul of mankind, it is no different from the functions of myths as a humanistic reflection returning to the fundamental question of human life.
By being reborn as a true mentor of the 22nd soul, the main character Joe Gardner became the main character of his life, creating cracks and finding joy in his life, and the 22nd soul was born as a complete creature in search of flames through his meeting with Joe Gardner. The meaning of flame can be interpreted from various angles depending on the perspective, but it is an imagination like a cycle in which seeds germinate, grow, and return to nature, and is an empirical imagination as an optimal experience achieved by aiming for something valuable. It is also the imagination of decongruity that breaks the coherent by dynamics without being stagnant. The taboo that myth says is consistent to control the explosive, but breaking it is a crack and dynamic force. This makes you realize that life and art are not in a straight line and are not consistent. Life is the courage to form relationships with others, overcome situations that humans cannot control, and enjoy every moment of life through internal experiences. These are the ways to move toward the purpose of life and find flames.
Just as myths are still alive to this day, humans are alive through countless reincarnations. The message delivered by “Soul” is the courage and hope to pursue the value and meaning of the soul circulating from the huge universe, and it is no different from the message delivered by the myth.
