후기 매체 시대의 비평적 담론들 (Critical Discourses in the Post-Medium (or Post-Media) Era)

초록

본 논문은 최근 미디어 아트의 이론과 실천에 많은 영향을 미치고 있는 연구자들 – 레프 마노비치나 피터 바이벨 등과 같은 – 의 이론적 성취와 한계를 되짚어 보고, 그 속에서 흔히 간과되고 있는 미디어의 미학적이고 형식적인 조건들을 비평가 로잘린드 크라우스가 지난 십여년간 “포스트 미디엄 조건(Post-Medium Condition)”이라는 용어 아래 진행한 일련의 논의들을 중심으로 살펴봄으로써, 후기 매체 이론의 새로운 지형도를 그려보고자 하는데 그 목적을 둔다.
물론 크라우스의 포스트 미디엄 이론은 마노비치나 바이벨의 포스트 미디어 이론과 다른 논리적, 역사적 구조를 갖는다. 그러나 그럼에도 불구하고, 크라우스의 주장은 최근 디지털 미디어 아트의 담론에 중요한 전환적 사유를 제공해주는데, 이는 ‘매체를 예술적 의도와 주장을 위한 “기술적 지지체(technical support)”로 정의하고, 예술가들이 이 지지체를 기존의 부정적 조건들(후기 매체 시대의 반예술적 조건들)에 탄력적으로 반응시키는 가운데, 그로부터 스스로를 재규정하는　규칙(recursive rules)을 발견하고 구체화한다’고 보는 그녀의 이론이 형식의 무규정성, 소통의 부재, 반예술적 태도 등으로 소급되는 디지털 미디어 아트의 위기에 보다 발전적인 대안을 제공해 줄 수 있기 때문이다.
본 논문의 말미에서는 특히 크라우스의 이 형식적이고 일면 회고적인 ‘포스트 미디엄 이론’이 어떻게 디지털 미디어 시대의 주요 논거들과 융합될 수 있는지, 예술 이후 After Art(2013)라는 최근 저작에서 이론가 데이빗 조셀릿이 전개한 일련의 수정주의적 디지털 매체 이론을 통해 조망해 봄으로써, 어떻게 오늘날 미디어 예술이 그것의 혁신성과 역사성 모두를 수렴할 수 있는지 가늠해 본다.

영어초록

This paper aims to make a better topography of post-medium discourse that can help us understand the nature of media-based art and its new direction in this digital era. The post medium discourses in recent art criticism have been greatly expanded through the articulations of Lev Manovich or Peter Weibel. Echoing with changes in the digital era, these theorists have elaborated how arts today can reflect the patterns of digital life; arts in their theories are destined to imitate modes of digital production, circulation, and consumption, losing their grip on physical grounds altogether. But to an extent, what they are celebrating with the post-media arts is in fact a death sentence to art’s medium-specificity. In other words, what has been said to be an opportunity in the rise of software, virtual realities, artists as DJs or programmers, now appears to be a crisis for art’s formal tradition.
Rosalind Krauss has keenly sensed this rupture in art history. She coined the term, the post-medium condition, to tackle the problems of the post-Greenbergian era, in her seminal book, A Voyage on the North Sea” - Art in the Age of the Post-Medium Condition (2000). Then later in 2011, she published a book, Under Blue Cup in which she replaces the old term, ‘the medium,’ with “the technical support” in order to illuminate medium’s technical aspect that “allows the artists to discover its ‘rule,’ which will in turn become the basis for that recursive self-evidence of a medium’s specificity.” In so doing, her theory acknowledges not only the tradition of art, but it also “welcomes the layered mechanisms of new technologies that make a simple, unitary identification of the work’s physical support impossible.” This is perhaps why Krauss’s retrospective, elitist theory should be taken into our account of digital media theories, despite the fact that she defines the media(um) differently.
In this paper, I will also discuss David Joselit’s new media theory in After Art (2013) that, I believe, mediates between the historicity of art mediums and the technological aspect of media. Joselit in this book argues that the unclassifiable, ever expanding digital image productions can be streamlined by what he calls “the format,” a structural unity of the digital economy. I find this idea as an amalgamation of the two different, yet inseparable, critical positions–media and medium.
