Mrs. Sinico of “A Painful case” and Sybil Vane of The Picture of Dorian Gray have several common elements. To begin with, Mrs. Sinico and Sybil Vane respectively commits suicide after their partner’s unexpected declaration of cutting off their relationship, which suggests that two male characters, Duffy and Dorian Gray, are responsible for two female character’s tragic death. Especially two male characters’ self-centeredness or narcissistic inclination is the main reason of the failure of their relationship and those two women’s death.
The fact that Mr. Duffy plays the role of “a teller” and Mrs. Sinico assumes the role of “a listener” emphasizes that their relationship is problematic unequal one. Meanwhile, Dorian Gray confines Sybil Vane within the role of an actress who plays the various beautiful heroines such as Juliet, Imogen, and Rosalind and he does not allow her to return to her real life and complete her real love with him.
Secondly, two female characters commonly acquire new positive meaning from each one’s male partner after their deaths. Mrs. Sinico’s death causes Mr. Duffy who denied her sexual desire for him to understand her loneliness and, at the same time, to recognize his own loneliness derived from her absence. And Sybil Vane’s suicide helps her to become the true ‘Juliet’ and makes her love for Dorian immortal one.
However, there exists difference between Dorian Gray’s from Mr. Duffy’s attitude toward their partner’s death. While the latter re-examines his whole life including his relationship with Mrs. Sinico after knowing her death, the former does not look back his life after being informed of Sybil vane’s death. That is, Mrs. Sinico’s death makes Mr. Duffy understand not only her life but also his own situation, however, Sybil Vane’s death does not influence on Dorian Gray’s life significantly.
In conclusion, James Joyce and Oscar Wilde commonly focus on how the male character who has the extreme self-centered tendency or narcissism projects his own desire toward the female character, denies her own desire, causes her to commit suicide, and rediscover her true meaning to him after her death.
