미셀 푸코의 헤테로토피아 개념을 구현한 월리엄 포사이드의 <헤테로토피아> (William Forsythe’s Performance of Heterotopia as Materialization of Michel Foucault’s Concept of Heterotopia)

초록

윌리엄 포사이드는 20세기 후반의 무용 특히 발레계를 혁신적으로 장식하는 동시에 21세기에도 의미 있는 발걸음을 지속해가는 대가다. 포사이드는 고전발레를 그 틀을 넘어 누구도 상상하지 못한 극단으로 몰고 갔다. 1976년 첫 작품을 발표한 이래로그의 예술적인 위업은 이후 등장하는 수많은 안무가들에게 크고작은 영향을 미쳐왔다. 세련미와 실험성을 동시에 이루어낸 그의안무 스타일은 무용예술이 나아가야할 방향을 제시하고 있다.
2005년 윌리엄 포사이드 무용단을 창단하고 나서는 더욱 최첨단의 실험을 단행함으로써 처음에 전통적인 발레로부터 출발했다는것이 믿기 힘들 정도다. 급진적인 최근 대표작인 <헤테로토피아>는 미셀 푸코의 헤테로토피아 개념을 구현한 무용작품이다.
미셀 푸코의 헤테로토피아는 한 마디로 정의하자면 특이성을특성으로 갖는 공간들이다. 한 사회 내의 일반적인 공간들과는 어떤 방식으로든 구분되는 절대적으로 다른 공간이다. 이 공간은 보수적, 다수적, 분산적인 즉 이질적인 공간이다. 여기서 이질성이란결국 한 사회가 ‘일상적인 것’ 혹은 ‘정상적인 것’으로 규정한 한계 밖에 위치한 무언가에 관련된 공간이다. 이러한 푸코의 헤테토피아 개념은 윌리엄 포사이드의 <헤테로토피아>에서 공간뿐 아니라 언어와 음악, 움직임, 관객의 시선이라는 요소로까지 확장되어구현되고 있다.
우선, 매우 특이한 공간 설정을 하고 있는데 메인 무대를 공간A로, 막 뒤에 작은 공간을 공간B로 나누어 놓았다. 결과적으로 공간A와 공간B는 한 공간을 이루는 이질적인 두 영역으로 작용한다. 둘째, 언어의 기본 단위로 여겨왔던 그리고 익숙하다고 여겨왔던 알파벳의 재배열은 전혀 이해할 수 없는 불편함을 초래한다. 완전하지 않거나 일상적이지 않은 언어와 음악의 파편들은 소통의 의미에 대해 재고하게 만든다. 셋째, 두 영역에서 동시적으로펼쳐지는 움직임은 공간A에서 기이한 행태로, 공간B에서는 절단되고 탈구축된 동작으로 제시된다. 움직임은 하나의 공간을 이루는 두 영역을 서로 다른 그러므로 평범하거나 정상적이지 않게 만드는 주요 요소다. 마지막으로, 관객으로 하여금 두 개의 공간을옮겨 다니게 하는 것이다. 전통적인 개념에서 고정된 방향으로 행위와 관람이 이루어졌던 것과 비교하면 대단히 불편한 그럼으로써이질적으로 열린 시선으로 관람을 유도하는 것이다.
이와 같이 윌리엄 포사이드의 <헤테로토피아>는 미셀 푸코의헤테로토피아적인 이질감을 공간, 언어와 음악, 움직임, 관객의 시선과 같은 요소로 실제화하여 21세기적인 혁신과 실험을 구현하고 있다.

영어초록

William Forsythe is one of the leading and innovative masterchoreographers who made a great leap forward in terms of promotingthe development of the dance world of the late 20th century,especially in ballet, and is still active as an influential presence in the21st century. Forsythe succeeded in breaking the conventionalframework of classical ballet and promoted it to the limit that no onehad ever imagined. Since choreographing his first work in 1976, hehas exerted an influence, small and big, on other contemporarychoreographers with his artistic prowess. His style of choreography,combining refinement and experimentation, is suggesting a properdirection for the art of dance. He established the Forsythe Companyin 2005 and undertook a series of up-to-date experiments, making ithard for viewers to think that the dance company had originallystarted as a classical ballet troupe. One of his radical masterpieces,Heterotopia, materializes the concept of “heteropia” elaborated byMichel Foucault.
In a few words, “heteropia” coined by Michel Foucault refers to agroup of spaces that are characterized by peculiarity and thatabsolutely distinguish themselves from other general spaces in any way possible. The spaces are naturally conservative, multiple,diversified, and heterogeneous one. Hetereogenity here is related tothe space that is related to something located beyond the boundarydefined as “ordinary” or “normal.” Foucault’s concept of “heteropia”has been materialized in Forsythe’s Heterotopia not only in terms ofspace but also in language and music, movements, and the gaze ofviewers.
First of all, Heterotopia creates a peculiar space where the mainstage and a small stage behind the curtain are set up separately andare titled Space A and Space B, respectively. Consequently, Space Aand Space B both function as heterogenous areas that together form acommon space. Second, rearrangements of alphabets that had hithertobeen regarded as a basic – and familiar – unit of language havebrought about uneasiness on the side of viewers so that they find ithard to understand the stage. Fragmentation of language and musicthat are not complete or common make viewers reconsider themeaning of communication. Third, movements of dancers arerepresented simultaneously in the two spaces but in a different mode:in an eccentric style in Space A and in severed and deconstructedmovements in Space B. Movements, therefore, are the main elementsthat make the two areas in one space different – therefore neitherordinary nor normal. Finally, such a setting makes viewers move theireyes from one space to another continuously. Compared with thesituation that movements of dancers and the gaze of viewers hadtraditionally been focused on a fixed direction, William Forsythe’schoreography makes the audience quite uneasy, but by doing so induces viewers to pay attention to the performance withheterogeneous and open gazes.
In conclusion, Forsythe’s masterpiece Heterotopia materializes theconcept of heterogeneity borrowed from Michel Foucault’s conceptof “heteropia” by encompassing space, language and music,movements, and the gaze of viewers, and succeeds in pursuingartistic innovation and experimentation in the 21st century.
