초록

이 글은 조선작가동맹 소속 재북 작가 반디의 『고발』의 세 판본을 대상으로, 텍스트가 흘러가는 궤적을 쫓으며 (재)생산하는 북한 재현에 대한 의미를 탐구하였다. 『고발』은 국가, 언어, 담론을 횡단하며 흐르는 텍스트이고, 텍스트가 놓이는 환경에 따라다른 의미를 생산하기도 하고, 그 환경에 의해 텍스트가 변화하기도 하였다. 최초 출간본인 조갑제닷컴 판본의 경우, 『고발』은 반공서사로 해석되었다. 조갑제닷컴 판본의 『고발』은 ‘액자소설’에 비유할 수 있을 만큼 ‘외화(발간사, 비화, 해설 등)–내화(소설)’의 형식으로 만들어졌고, 텍스트 바깥에서는 ‘텍스트의 탈북기’와 반공이데올로기가 반복되었다. 한편, 『고발』은 20여개의 언어권으로 번역되어 나갔으며, 각종 문학상의 후보에 오르거나 수상을 하기도 했다. 영국 PEN 번역상을 수상한 뒤 대중문예물 출판사 다산북스에서 재판된 『고발』은 기존의 조갑제닷컴 판본과 다른 ‘책’으로만들어졌다. 텍스트를 둘러싼 외화는 책 자체에서는 사라졌으나 마케팅 전략으로는 계속해서 사용되었다. 다산북스 판본은 반공서사를 지우고 북한 인권이라는 보편가치를 내세웠다. 정치성이 사라진 자리에 ‘문학성’을 강조했으며, ‘문학성’은 『고발』이 해외에서 받은 주목에 의해 보증되었다. 반면, 영역판 The Accusation은 표지, 광고 문구등 텍스트 바깥뿐만 아니라 그 내용에 이르기까지 폭넓은 변화의 양상을 보여준다. 『고발』이 영어로 번역되고, 영미 저널과 출판시장에 놓이면서 생긴 변화 양상을 간략하게 정리하면, 1)가난의 강조, 2)‘은밀한 독재자의 나라’ 이미지 (재)생산, 3)전체주의스펙타클의 강조이다. 한국어 판본과 차이를 보임에도 The Accusation은 ‘재북’ 작가의존재에 의해서 리얼리티를 획득했고, 이렇게 획득된 북한 ‘내부’의 사정은 거꾸로 ‘베일에 싸인 알 수 없는 나라’를 엿보는 불순한 호기심의 시선을 만들어냈다.

영어초록

『GOBAL』 is the novel of Bandi, an anonymous writer in North Korea, which describes North Korean realty from 1989 to 1995, and only its text was taken out of North Korean and published. In Korea, it was first published from Chogabje.com, and then translated into 20 languages and published in each foreign country. In particular, Deborah Smith who translated it into English received PEN Translation Prize, and then its copyright was transferred to Dasanbooks which published it as a popular literary product without political color. While the 'narrative of escape from North Korea' which has been increased since the mid to late 1990s puts forward economically extreme poverty, the inner conflict of people banished by 'Chief Magistrate-Party' is the core narrative of 『GOBAL』. Different from the narrative of escape from North Korea after the 'Arduous March', 『GOBAL』, therefore, shows various behaviors of people who were aware of deception and fallacy in the North Korean regime, where it began to be changed from 1989 to 1995.
However, provocative materials around the text make 『GOBAL』 more likely to be understood as 'the record of people who leave their home due to more difficult livelihood', a somewhat stale rhetoric. In addition, the North Korean regime as 'evil' is also emphasized, as adversity derived from the process in which the text was taken out is stressed. Meanwhile, The Accusation, the English version of 『GOBAL』, translated by Deborah Smith emphasizes that it accuses the 'hidden inner parts of North Korea' in journals of England and America. It promotes Western readers' impure and curious views on North Korea. Moreover, the English version not only applies paraphrasing and transformation to the original text, but also adds some specific phrases to it. Some aspects of the transformation largely tend to stress poverty in North Korea, totalitarian spectacles and tyranny of dictatorship. Bandi's 『GOBAL』 called 'the escape of North Korea in terms of text' is a text flowing from North Korea through South Korea to foreign countries and producing North Korean images depending on narrative topography to which the text is exposed or needs of journals issued. It is possible to examine how 'North Korea as a gossip' is produced and consumed through 『GOBAL』.
