초록

하경덕의 활동과 건국인식은 흥사단 계열인사 및 민족자주연맹의 계열의 중간파와 유사한 모습을 보이고 있다. 이것은 기존에 일반적으로 알려진 흥사단 계열의 미국유학생들의 행로와는 다른 모습이다. 때문에 그에 대한 연구는 해방전후기 흥사단계 및 중간파 지식인들의 저변과 정국인식에 대해 살펴볼 수 있는 좋은 예가 될 수 있을 것이다. 그의 활동은 일제 강점기 학문으로서 사회학이 자리 잡지 못하여 제자가 없었고, 중간파 몰락과 같은 이유로 관심을 끌지 못하였다. 또한 비교적 자료가 많지 않은 인물이라는데도 원인이 있을 것이라 생각된다.
하경덕은 하버드 대학에 재학 시기, 중요한 인맥과 사상을 구축하게 되었다. 그는 흥사단과 국민회에 가입하여, 해방 후 행보에 큰 영향을 미친 인물들과 교류하는 계기를 마련하였다. 한편, 박사학위논문에서는 인간의 가치와 권리를 존중하고 생활여건에 무관심한 사회학은 불필요하다고 단언하였다. 그는 선진사회는 후진지역을 점유할 수 있다는 제국주의적 발상이나 약육강식의 논리를 비판하였다. 더불어 흥사단의 사상적 영향을 받아 선한 인민이 선한 사회제도를 만들 수 있다고 믿었다. 이것은 흥사단계에서 만든 동우회의 인격수양과 민족성개조와 상통하는 것이었다. 그러나 흥사단계 지식인들의 대체적인 모습과 같이 그가 주장하는 변혁은 적극적인 사회변혁보다 개인적인 수양에 머물러 있었다. 그의 이러한 모습은 일제강점기 활동하던 지식인의 한계를 보여주는 것이라고 할 수 있다.
하경덕이 해방 후 창간한 『코리아타임즈』는 미군정과 흥사단계 미국유학생들의 가교가 되어 주었다. 이때 함께 준비위원은 대부분 흥사단계 인사들로 미군정으로부터 중용되었고, 그도 해방 직후 최대 규모였던 서울신문사의 사장으로 취임하게 되었다. 『서울신문』의 기사보도는 객관성을 바탕으로 노동문제, 토지개혁에 관한 인식들은 하경덕과 나아가 흥사단계 중간파라고 평가되는 오기영 등과 상당한 유사점을 보이고 있다. 그리고 『서울신문』은 민족자주연맹 계열 인사들의 입장을 대변하고, 일종의 정치기반이 되어주었다. 더불어 그는 남조선과도입법의원의 관선위원으로 활동하는 등 중간파의 길을 걸었다.
대한민국정부수립 후 그는 정부를 인정하면서도 이승만 정부의 부패와 무능한 정책수행에 실망스러워했다. 이러한 그의 정국인식과 입장은 이승만 정부와 불화하였고, 결국 그는 서울신문사 사장직에서 물러나고 말았다.

영어초록

Ha Gyeong-deok's activity and recognition of founding a country are showing similar image to a centrist of the Heungsadan-affiliated personnel and of the National Independence Federation affiliation. This is different image from a path of Koreans studying in the United States of the Heungsadan(興士團) affiliation, which is generally known conventionally. Hence, a research on him will be able to be a good example available for examining about the base and the political situation awareness in the Heungsadan affiliation and centrist intellects before and after the liberation of 1945. His activity had no disciple due to failing to be positioned sociology as learning during the Japanese colonial era, and failed to draw an interest for a reason like a fall in a centrist. Also, it is thought that there will be a cause even in being a figure who relatively has few materials.
Ha Gyeong-deok came to implement important personal connection and idea during the period of attending Harvard University. He joined Heungsadan and National Association, thereby having arranged an opportunity of exchanging with characters who had great influence upon walking following the liberation. In the meantime, he asserted that a human being's value and right are respected and that sociology indifferent to the living conditions is not needed in a doctoral thesis. He criticized an imperialistic thinking or the logic of the jungle as saying that the advanced society can occupy the underdeveloped areas. In addition, he was ideologically influenced by Heungsadan, thereby having believed that good people can make good social system. This was what is in common with self- cultivation and ethnicity modification in Donguhoe that was made by the Heungsadan affiliation. However, like the general image of intellects in the Heungsadan affiliation, the revolution that he asserts remained in individual cultivation rather than a positively social change. His image in this way can be said to show the limitation of intellects who had been active during the Japanese colonial rule.
『Korea Times』 that Ha Gyeong-deok firstly published after the liberation became a bridge between the U.S. military rule and the Koreans studying in the United States as the Heungsadan affiliation. Along with this, an arrangement committee mostly included the figures from the Heungsadan affiliation who were appointed from the U.S. military rule. He was also appointed as CEO of Seoul Daily News, which had been the largest scale right after the liberation. In terms of the news article in 『Seoul Daily News』, the recognitions on labor issue and land reform based on objectivity are showing quite similarity to Ha Gyeong-deok and further to Oh Gi-yeong who is evaluated as a centrist of the Heungsadan affiliation. And 『Seoul Daily News』 became a kind of political foundation with standing for the figures affiliated with National Independence Federation. In addition, he walked along the centrist such as being active as an appointed committee in the Transitional Legislative Assembly of the South Chosun.
Following the establishment of the Republic of Korea, he acknowledged the government, but was disappointed with the Rhee Syngman government's corruption and incompetent policy performance. His political situation awareness and position in this way had an issue with the Rhee Syngman government. Ultimately, he resulted in having stepped down from the position of president for Seoul Daily News company.
