『주역』·「단전」 ‘時大矣哉’의 함의와 해석 특징 (A study on the Meaning and Interpretation Characteristics of ‘The time is great(時大矣哉)’ in Tuanzhuan of Zhouyi)

초록

본고는 『주역』·「단전」에서 ‘시대의재(時大矣哉)’라고 시(時)의 중대성을 특정한 4괘가 지닌 함의와 해석 특징의 고찰을 목적으로 한다. 4괘는 이괘(頤卦), 대과괘(大過卦), 해괘(解卦), 혁괘(革卦)이며, ‘시대의재’는 시(時)를 강조한 단사(彖辭) 3종류 가운데 하나이다. 4괘에 포함된 괘·효사와 주석 등 역사(易辭)를 비교하는 역례비석(易例比釋)의 방법으로 분석하였다.
결과적으로 첫째, 이괘는 천도를 3가지의 ‘양도(養道)’로 표현하였는데, 우주가 만물을 기름[養], 성인이 현인을 기름, 자신 스스로를 기름을 말하였다. 양도의 실천에서 중요한 것은 중도(中道)와 정도(正道)임을 강조하였다. 해괘에서 ‘해도(解道)’는 자연의 사계절 변화로 상징되었고, 이러한 변화는 해결의 실마리로 비유되었다. 두 괘에서의 ‘시(時)’는 천도 변화를 구체화한 표현이고, 시변(時變)·시세(時勢)에 따른 천인합덕(天人合德)의 이치는 양도와 해도로서 설명되었다. 천도 변화의 항구성을 합덕(合德)으로 해석하고, 그 당위성이 중도(中道)와 정도(正道)의 근거로서 제시되었다.
둘째, 대과괘는 크게 지나친 상황과 위기 대처의 극복이라는 중의적 뜻을 지니고 있다. 혁괘는 왕조(王朝)의 바뀜을 상징하는데, 새로운 역법(曆法)의 제정이 자연의 순환 변화와 같은 위대성과 당위성으로 설명되었다. 두 괘에서는 시의(時宜)와 신뢰(信賴)가 중요한 덕목으로 표현되었고, 위기극복의 방법이 중정지도(中正之道)임을 매우 강조하였다.
셋째, 도가와 유가의 역학에서 ‘시대의재’를 주석한 관점은 확연한 차이점이 있다. 도가역학자인 위(魏)의 왕필보다 송(宋)의 정이와 주희를 비롯한 유가역학자의 주석에서 ‘시대의재’를 ‘시(時)의 위대성을 찬미’한 것으로 주석되었다. 당(唐)의 공영달은 도가와 유가의 복합적 견해를 드러냈다.
결론적으로 ‘시대의재(時大矣哉)’의 시(時)는 시용(時用)과 시의(時義)를 표현한 괘들의 시(時)보다 거시적인 천도를 상징하며, 인간사에서 우주 변화와 천도의 이치는 중도(中道)와 정도(正道)로서 실현될 가치임을 구체화하는 데 활용되었다. 이로써 ‘시대의재’는 고대에 천인합덕(天人合德) 사상을 표현한 연원으로써 의미가 있는 해석임을 확인할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper examines the meaning and characteristics of space-time reflected in the interpretation of Yigua(頤卦), Daguogua(大過卦), Jiegua(解卦), and Gegua(革卦), explained in Tuanzhuan(彖傳) of Zhouyi(周易). Tuanzhuan refers the importance of space-time to ‘The time is great(時大矣哉)’, ‘The time and use is great(時用大矣哉)’ and ‘The time and Meaning is great(時義大矣哉)’. The interpretational characteristics and meaning of the four gua that stipulate ‘The time is great’ among these have been clarified in this study.
As a result of the study, firstly, in Yigua and Jiegua, 'The time(時)' symbolizes the morality of the heaven, Yigua defines the Dao of cultivating(養道) and Jiegua describes about the Dao of solution(解道). Yigua lay emphasis on the basis of things with three kinds: the universe creates all things, the saints make the wise men and the self, make the self, which are essence of Zhongdao(中道) and the right(正道). Furthermore, Jiegua has been compared to the Dao of solution(解道), which is the evidence of resolving the reasoning and persistence of natural changes in four seasons. Similarly, by explaining the rationalization of Hapdeok in the union of heaven and man. The emphasis was placed on Zhongdao and the right of the value for this natural unity.
Secondly, Daguogua explained extreme circumstances, ability to cope with disaster and how to overcome it underlining the Zhongdao's homeostasis. In Gegua, the revolution of dynasties, change of the calendar, the certainty of revolution, transformation and reform were associated with greatness of natural change and the reasonable change.
Thirdly, the commentary of continuous Chinese Confucian scholar on Tuanzhuan and WangBi(王弼) of Wei(魏) Dynasty, a Taoist epidemiologist, emphases the transition and change in time and not interpret it. The commentary of Kong-Yingda(孔穎達) of Tang(唐) Dynasty, who inherited this development are contrary to mention, which is the praise of gua in two gua. Chengyi(程頤) and Zhuxi(朱熹) of Song(宋) Dynasty's Neo-Confucian equally stated that glorified admired the circulation and operation of the way of heaven-time.
As a result, ‘The time is great’ in Tuanzhuan contains Yuanshi rujia’s and idea of the ​​time(時)’ from the perspective of ‘The time is great’ as a human duty. Neo-Confucianism has a feature of praising greatness and importance of time compared to the mechanics of Taoism. Moreover, it was interpreted as a macroscopic meaning of time beyond use(用) and meaning(義). This confirms that ‘The time is great’ embodied the philosophical understanding of yuanshi rujia along with the perception of the ancients admiring the Greatness of Nature.
