초록

Despite their years of hard training and dedication, professional dancers reach the end of their performing career in their early- to mid-30s, which usually entails economic, educational, and psychological challenges, among others, for them. This research examines the support system for professional dancers' career transition before and following their early retirement. The data is gathered through documentations and interviews with key persons concerned including administrators and faculty members as well as professional dancers in a case study of Second Stage, a partnership program between Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) and Seattle University to support PNB dancers' successful career transition after retirement. The findings show an arts organization's (e.g., PNB) partnership with a higher education institution (e.g., SU) can provide valuable opportunities both for the professional artists and the students. Participating dancers stated that they definitely appreciated not only the educational and economic benefits, but also the psychological support from the program, which gave them a feeling of being prepared for their future career. Suggestions were made regarding procedural restrictions that come with a large educational institution, in order not to discourage the participating dancers.
