칼뱅의 ‘하나님 적응’(Divine accommodation) 개념과 목회적 돌봄 (Calvin’s “Divine Accommodation” and Pastoral Care)

초록

본 논문은 칼뱅의 신학 사상과 현대 심리학자인 코헛의 이론의 대화를 통해 한국 교회에 필요한 목회적 돌봄이 무엇인가를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 연구자는 칼뱅의 신학 사상에서 하나님의 적응(Divine Accommodation) 개념을 다루고 이 주제를 적용한다. 칼뱅의 하나님 적응 개념은 (1) 관계를 지향하는 하나님 (2) 인간의 연약함을 이해하고 공감하려는 실천적인 하나님 (3) 인간의 연약함에도 불구하고 구원하려는 의지적인 하나님을 드러낸다. 이 점에서 연구자는 Divine Accommodation을 “적응하려는 하나님”으로 번역하기를 제안한다. 그리고 이렇게 “적응하려는 하나님”의 실천 방식을 보다 구체적으로 서술하기 위한 적절한 언어로서 코헛의 자기 심리학을 사용한다. 코헛의 자기 심리학은 거울 자기대상, 이상화 자기대상, 그리고 쌍둥이 자기대상이라는 세 가지 자기대상(selfobject)의 역할의 중요성을 강조한다. 코헛의 자기대상 개념 속에 관계성, 공감성 그리고 의지성은 칼뱅의 “적응하려는 하나님” 개념과 연결된다고 할 수 있다. 이런 논의를 바탕으로 연구자는 요한복음 21장에 기록된 베드로를 회복시키는 예수 사건을 분석하여, 한국 교회에 필요한 목회적 돌봄이 무엇인가를 제안한다. 한국 교회에 필요한 목회적 돌봄으로 고통에 능동적으로 동참하는 공감을 통해, 변형적 내면화가 일어나 새로운 이야기가 창조되도록, 교회는 교인의 자기 대상으로서의 역할을 해야 함을 제안한다. 더 나아가 칼뱅과 같은 고전 신학을 현대 상담학의 언어로 서술될 수 있음을 확인한다.

영어초록

This paper endeavors to undertake an exploration of the imperative for pastoral care within the Korean ecclesiastical context through a scholarly interplay between the theological doctrines of John Calvin and the contemporary psychological theories advanced by Heinz Kohut. The central focus of this investigation pertains to Calvin’s theological construct known as “divine accommodation,” which encompasses three core facets: (1) a relational conception of God, (2) a pragmatic God characterized by a disposition for comprehending and empathizing with human frailty, and (3) a volitional God committed to salvation despite the inherent human frailty. The researcher proposes to terminologically construe Divine Accommodation as “a God who adapts,” and to elucidate the specific modality of this divine adaptability, the framework of Kohut’s self psychology is employed. Kohut’s self psychology accentuates the significance of three distinct selfobjects: the mirror selfobject, the idealized selfobject, and the twin selfobject. It is discerned that Kohut’s conceptualization of the selfobject aligns with Calvin’s concept of divine accommodation by virtue of its foundational elements of relationality, empathy, and volition. Building upon these foundational discussions, the researcher conducts an in-depth analysis of the biblical account of Jesus’ restorative interaction with Peter as chronicled in John 21. Subsequently, the study posits recommendations regarding the requisite pastoral care strategies essential for the Korean church. Within the ambit of pastoral care for the Korean church, the researcher advocates that the church should function as a self-object for its congregants. This role as a self-object enables the facilitation of transformative internalization processes through active engagement in empathetic participation in suffering, ultimately contributing to the construction of a new narrative. Furthermore, the research underscores the feasibility of rendering classical theological constructs, such as those expounded by Calvin, into the contemporary idiom of counseling and psychology.
