음양오행설 영향 아래 구성된 『관자』의 시령에 담긴 자연계와 인간계의 연결 (The Connection between the Natural and Human Worlds Appearing in Seasonal Ordinances of the Guanzi, under the Influence of the Yin-Yang and Five Phases Theory)

초록

『관자』에서 초기 단계 음양오행설로 평가받는 편들은 실제 음양오행설을 말할 만큼 논의가 진전되지는 않았지만, 진전된 논의를 평가할 기준으로 오분 체계 구성 요소의 확장 정도와 자연계와 인간계의 유기적 연결을 전제한 시령(時令)의 심화 정도를 제시해 준다. 발전된 단계의 음양오행설로 평가 받는 「유관(幼官)」, 「사시(四時)」, 「오행(五行)」, 「경중기(輕重己)」는 계절에 따른 군주의 정령인 시령이 중심을 이룬다. 즉, 음양오행설이 시령에 담겨 있는 것이다. 이들 네 편은 음양오행설 영향 아래 법가적 사유와 음양가적 사유에서 발전되어 온 시령의 특징을 각각 보여 준다. 「경중기」의 시령은 사분 체계여서 오행설의 영향력을 말하기 힘든 가장 초보적 형태인데, 그 내용은 「유관」으로 이어지면서 군주의 통치 행위에 관한 지침이 오분 체계로 구체화된다. 통치에 관한 실제 지침을 위주로 구성된 이 두 편은 인간계에 무게를 두고 자연계와 합일을 지향한 시령으로, 군주의 통치 원리에 효율성과 정당성을 부여했다는 점에서 법가적 사유에 가깝다. 이에 비해 「사시」는 오분 체계에 군주의 수칙이 아 닌 자연계의 구성물을 배열하고 「오행」은 오행 상생 순서와 한 해의 흐름을 연결시켜 자연계에 상대적으로 더 관심이 많다. 이 두 편은 천인상응(天人相應) 에 근거해 재이설(災異說)을 발전시키는데, 이는 자연계에 대한 심화된 이해를 바탕으로 군주의 통치 행위를 제재하는 논의를 구성했다는 점에서 음양가적 사유에 가깝다. 이처럼 「경중기」와 「유관」은 인간계에 무게를 두고 자연계와 합일을 추구하고, 「사시」와 「오행」은 자연계에 무게를 두고 인간계와 합일을 도모하는 가운데 시령을 발전시켰다.

영어초록

Guanzi’s chapters that are evaluated as early stages of the Yin-Yang and Five phases theory do not actually present discussions advanced enough to be classified as part of this theory. However, they suggest criteria for analyzing advanced discussions of this theory: how much the five-division classification is expanded and how closely seasonal ordinances take the causal connection between the natural and human worlds into consideration.
The “Youguan,” “Sishi,” “Wuxing,” and “Qingzhong ji” chapters, whose main contents are seasonal ordinances or political stipulations of the ruler in accordance with seasonal changes, are evaluated as advanced stages of the Yin-Yang and Five phases theory. In order words, the Yin-Yang and Five phases theory exerts its influence on seasonal ordinances. These four chapters demonstrate two kinds of features appearing in the development of seasonal ordinances: one is close to Legalist ideas and the other is close to ideas of the Yin-Yang school.
The seasonal ordinances of “Qingzhong ji” which is based on the quadrant system is the most rudimentary form that displays very little influence of the Five phases theory. Its contents are elaborated further in “Youguan” and political stipulations of the ruler are embodied in the quintuple system. These two chapters describe seasonal ordinances in the quest for unity between the natural and human worlds while putting more emphasis on the human world in order to generate efficiency as well as legitimacy for the principle of the ruler’s governance; in this sense, their discussions are close to Legalist ideas.
In comparison, “Sishi” arranges elements of the natural world instead of political stipulations of the ruler in the five-division classification, and “Wuxing” connects the generating cycle of the Five phases with the passage of the time of the year, which support their relatively higher interest in the natural world. These two chapters develop discussions on calamities and anomalies based on the idea of resonance between Heaven and humans, which has an effect of warning the ruler. This discussion, most probably formulated by the Yin-Yang school, can be seen as imposing restrictions on the ruler’s governance based on a deepened understanding of the natural world.
In summary, “Qingzhong ji” and “Youguan” pursue unity between the natural and human worlds with more emphasis on the human world, while “Sishi” and “Wuxing” pursue the same goal with more emphasis on the natural world.
