회답겸쇄환사의 일본정보 탐색 연구 (A Study on the Japan Information of ‘the Dispatch of the Diplomatic Mission’)

초록

임진왜란 이후 고조된 위기의식을 타개하기 위해 조선은 피로인 쇄환을 명분으로 사신을 파견하였다. 그러나 회답겸쇄환사라는 명칭으로 파견된 조선후기 통신사의 주요 임무는 일본의 현재 상황을 정확하게 파악하여 일본의 침략에 효과적으로 대비하는 것이었다. 1607년ㆍ1617년ㆍ1624년 세 차례 파견된 회답겸쇄환사는 조선전기 『해동제국기』의 내용을 관습적으로 수용하는 방식에서 벗어나 일본을 탐색할 수 있는 새로운 방법을 모색하기 시작하였다. 우선은 쇄환 과정에서 만난 피로인과 문답을 나누며 일본의 정세 변화와 전쟁 재발의 가능성을 파악했다. 또한 다양한 일본 문헌을 활용하여 기존의 일본정보를 확인ㆍ정정하는 동시에 새로운 정보를 확충하기도 하였다.
이런 방법을 통해 회답겸쇄환사는 수길 사후의 일본 상황을 파악해 나갔다. 관원합전과 대판전투 등 덕천가강이 막부를 개창하는 과정에서 벌어진 일본의 내전의 양상은 물론 그 이후 막부가 펼친 권력 강화책에 대해서도 자세하기 탐문했다. 또한 일본의 재침략 가능성이 농후한 상황에서 그들의 전쟁 역량이 어느 정도 되는지에 대해서도 관심을 가졌다. 특히 회답겸쇄환사는 일본의 경제적 번영이 일본의 전쟁 역량 강화와 어떻게 이어졌는지에 대해서 깊이 살폈다.
이러한 회답겸쇄환사의 탐문 결과는 조선의 대외 정책을 결정하는데 영향을 미쳤고, 그들이 모색한 탐색 경로의 다양화는 후대 사행원들이 일본을 점 더 다양한 시각에서 접근할 수 있는 계기가 되었다.

영어초록

Press agencies were dispatched in Japan 12 times for 200 years in the late Joseon Dynasty era. 3 private conducts among them in the early days(1607, 1617, 1624) were dispatched under the name 'dispatch of the diplomatic mission,' and the main duty was repatriating people who got kidnapped during the Japanese Invasion of Korea. However, it was just a superficial justification of dispatching envoys. In fact, Joseon Royal Court had to expand the Japan information to prepare for Japanese invasion effectively, and they intended to purse this expansion through the dispatch of the diplomatic mission.
However, Japanese information that can be collected during short stay in Japan was limited. Moreover, it was impossible to accurately investigate circumstances due to noncooperation of Tsushima Island. However, the kidnapped Chosun people who they met during the repatriation process of kidnapped prisoners provided help in overcoming limitations in collecting information that the press agency had. Therefore, unlike previous envoys, the dispatch of diplomatic mission helped to comprehend situations in Japan based on the questions and answers from people who were staying in Japan. Also, the dispatch of the diplomatic mission intended to modify numerous errors on existing Sahaengnok or maps through Japanese literature to overcome an estrangement with Japan that cannot be done with their knowledge.
The dispatch of the diplomatic mission tried to understand the current state of affairs of Japan through these various channels. It was because the changed composition of power in Japan made direct influence on the diplomatic relations with Joseon. Therefore, the dispatch of the diplomatic mission collected numerous rumors to investigate the public sentiment of Japan, and explored the already settled disputes again to understand the dominating power of the Japan's feudal government accurately. Moreover, how economic power and various customs of Japan strengthened their warfare capability was identified. The Japan information search of the dispatch of the diplomatic mission was done extensively from the political strife aspect in Japan and power of Japan's feudal government. This made great effect on the diplomatic strategy of Great Japan in Joseon Dynasty era.
