초록

인간이 동물과 다른 점은 여럿인데, 그 중 하나는 감정 표현의 자율성이다. 그리고 감정이 돌출되는 구체적 근원은 인감의 뇌하수체에서 조절되는 오감(五感)과 또 다른 세계인 영감(靈感)이라고 생각하며, 이에 대한 연구를 통하여 시각적인 자료를 만들어보고자 다양한 자료를 찾았다. 그러나 자료들은 대부분 어린이들의 두뇌 발달 교육과 전문 학자의 학술적 저술만 즐비할 뿐 보다 친근하게 접근할 수 있는 시각적 이미지로 표현된 텍스트는 좀처럼 보기 힘들었다. 그래서 오감과 영감에 대한 시각적 표현 구상으로 고민하게 되었다. 이에 35여명의 연구원과 프로젝트가 진행되었으며 이에 따른 컨셉 회의와 브리핑, 브레인스토밍 등을 통해 다양한 편집디자인 표현에 매진하였다. 오감과 영감을 시각화 시키는 작업에 중점을 두었다. 그리고 의미와 각 감각의 이해도를 높이기 위한 기초과학 상식에 입각한 정보디자인의 제작, 각 감각의 시각적 증빙을 위한 실험 등을 구사하였다. 그리고 각 감각을 구체화시키기 위해 사물과 의미 표현을 위한 촬영, 메타포의 활용, 일러스트레이션 타이포그라피에 특히 역점을 두었다. 이러한 실험과 표현 방법을 통하여 제작과정과 그리고 이러한 작업의 결과가 하나의 책으로 완성되어가는 결과물을 연구물로 제시하였다. 이 연구결과는 오감과 영감을 보는 남다른 발견과 발상, 해체와 해석의 유추로 고민한 흔적이 녹아 있는 결과물을 살펴 보이며, 독자들에게는 구체화된 오감과 영감을 특별하게 음미할 수 있는 기회를 주리라 생각한다.

영어초록

As a designer, my main and foremost interest has lain in employment of typographical features in graphic design artwork. Typography has fascinated me with its narrative and visuals, which acted as a trigger for me to experiment on juxtaposition of typography and images. As I have worked with the students, I realized that the narrative isn't just what is written; rather, the process that the typography is integrated in a design-work tells much more meaningful and crucial information. Investigating and exploiting design process could enlighten us better on design-work or design itself. Especially, as an educator it seems quite obligatory and rewarding to take an in-depth look at the process that an artwork goes through from the very beginning of an initiative to the birth to the world.
The paper examines the design process of the artwork '5+1'. To introduce the book into the world, 35 student designers worked together with me as an art director and advisor. They were taking the a-month-and-half-long special course provided by the Visual Communication Department, Tongmyong University. The topic of five senses and inspiration was introduced by me, which is one of my strong beliefs as a designer. The whole process from the point of grouping until the publication of the book is closely described. Basically, the students controlled the whole design-work. They managed the work schedule and decided what and how to do. Through the intense and student-centered course, they learned how to work with others, what makes design and makes it better, what elements construct designers' mental criteria, and what to do to be a good or effective designer. The book '5+1' is a result of an educational experiment, visualizing the topic of five senses and inspiration with a variety of images and typography. Its narrative is based on the survey of science books and dictionaries and the interviews with medical doctors and experts. '5+1' deals with the topic informatively and inspirationally. We believe the case study to see the process of design-work suggests an interesting topic to the design research field; at the same time, the process-centered research can be tremendously beneficial to the education and teaching.
