초록

This study focused on the mediated effects of maternal parenting stress and role model on positive self
concept of children in multicultural families. To investigate the mediated effects, bootstrapping method
based on structural equation modeling was used. This study used wave 1(2011) and wave 2(2012) data
from the Gyeonggi Education Welfare Panel, which consists of 403 matched pairs of immigrant women
and their school-aged children living in Gyeonggi-do. The results showed that children who have mothers
having high level of parenting stress were significantly less likely to have positive self concept, but children
reporting high level of role model were significantly more likely to have positive self concept. The
mediated effects of parenting stress and role model on positive self concept through cultural capital, which
was regarded as a proximal factor for the developmental outcomes, were statistically significant. This study
supports the theoretical promoting role of cultural capital and suggests the need for facilitating the
interventive approach to increase cultural capital and buffer parenting stress of multicultural families.
Practice and policy implications as well as further research topic were discussed for promoting a positive
development of children in multicultural families.
