조선 후기 중인층 자전문학의 서술적 특징 연구 (A Study on descriptive features of Middle Class Intellectuals Autobiographical Literature in the Late Chosun Dynasty)

초록

본고는 창작 주체에 주목하여 조선 후기 자전문학을 고찰해보고자 하였다. 그리하여 조선 후기 중인층의 자전문학을 대상으로 그 서술적 특징을 살폈다.
조선시대 중인층은 조선 후기에 이르러 하나의 신분층으로 입지를 다지고 경제적․문화적 토대를 구축하였지만, 사회 제도와 관습에 의해 신분 상승이 제한되고 권력으로부터 소외를 겪었다. 이러한 환경은 중인층이 자기 정체성을 확인하고 자의식을 형성함에 있어서 중요한 영향을 끼쳤다. 이처럼 중인층이 자신의 정체성과 자의식을 확립해가는 과정 속에서 자전문학이 본격 창작되었다. 사회적 모순 앞에서 중인층 문인들은 자전 창작을 통해 자기 존재 가치를 스스로 증명하면서 불만과 소외감을 해소하고자 하였다.
중인층 자전문학의 서술적 특징은 크게 두 가지이다. 첫째, 자전문학의 대표적 양식인 자찬묘지명을 확인할 수 없고 그보다 전 양식의 自傳을 애호하였다. 일생동안 기릴만한 이력이나 공덕이 많지 않았던 중인층은 관력을 나열하고 격식을 따져야 하는 묘지명보다 보다 대중적인 양식으로서 유연한 서술이 가능한 전 양식을 애호하여 自傳을 지었다. 두 번째 특징은 글쓰기 방식과 작품 구성에 있어서 새로운 양상을 보이는 작품이 많다는 것이다. 정태진술과 과정진술을 복합적으로 사용하여 의식세계의 변모를 선명히 보여준 崔奇男의 「拙翁傳」, 일반 자전과 달리 1인칭 시점에서 자기 일생을 직서한 柳最鎭의 「自序傳」, 필기잡록형 자전으로 지방 향리의 소시민적 삶을 생생하게 보여주는 金敬天의 『巽窩謾錄自序』, 자찬연보의 공적 서술 흐름에서 이탈하여 개인사의 기쁨과 슬픔을 모두 다루고 있는 馬聖鱗의 「平生憂樂總錄」이 대표적이다.
조선시대 취약 계층이라 할 수 있는 중인층의 자전문학을 통해서 창작 주체의 신분, 정치적 지위, 경제적 상황 같은 현실적 문제들이 자전문학의 유형이나 서술 방식이 결정됨에 중요한 영향을 미친다는 것을 확인할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper focused on the author’s group and studied the Autobiographical Literature of the late Joseon Dynasty. Thus, Descriptive features were discussed in the Autobiographical Literature of the middle class in the late Joseon Dynasty.
During the late Joseon Dynasty, the middle class developed economically and culturally to become a solid class. But the rise in status was limited by social institutions and customs and alienated from power. This environment has had an important impact on the middle class’ identification and self-consciousness. Their Autobiographical Literature was created in the process of establishing one’s identity and self-consciousness among the middle class. In the face of social contradictions, the writers of the middle class resolved their dissatisfaction and alienation by proving themselves the value of their existence through the creation of autobiography.
There are two main descriptive features of middle-class Autobiographical Literature. First, the representative form of Autobiographical Literature, the name of the Self-written epitaph(自撰墓誌銘), could not be confirmed, and the Autobiography(自傳) was favored. The middle class, who had no outstanding achievements throughout their lives, could change their narrative and preferred to create popular Autobiography(自傳). Because the name of the cemetery records official matters and values formalities. The second characteristic is that there are many works that show a new aspect in the way they are written and composed. Choi Kinam(崔奇男)’s Jolongjeon(拙翁傳) which clearly showed the transformation of the conscious world by using a fixed narration and time process description methods, Yoo Choijin(柳最鎭)’s Jaseonjeon(自序傳) who wrote his life directly from the first person point of view, and Kim Kyungcheon (金敬天)’s Sonwamanrokjaseo(巽窩謾錄自序) gives a detailed account of the lives of the middle class. Ma SeongLin(馬聖麟)’s PyeongseongUrakChongrok(平生憂樂總錄) deviated from the official description of the Self-Chronology(自撰年譜), he described both the joys and sorrows of the individual.
The Autobiographical Literature of the middle class, which is considered a vulnerable class during the Joseon Dynasty, shows that practical problems such as the status, political status, and economic situation of the creative entity have an important effect on the determination of the type or method of Autobiographical Literature.
