『중용』의 ‘신(神)’개념에 대한 순자미학적 탐구 (The Xun zi-Aesthetical Study About Golden mean's The Concept of God)

초록

『중용』은 유교경전 중에서 가장 어렵고 심오한 경전의 하나로 꼽힌다. 그간의 『중용』 연구는 주로 성론(誠論)과 귀신론(鬼神論)을 중심으로 철학사상적 이해에 초점이 맞춰져 진행되어 온 편이다. 또한 순자사상은 유학의 번외자로 치부되어 매우 홀대되어 온 것도 사실이다. 이러한 아쉬움을 보완하고자 본 연구는 『중용』의 神(신)개념을 성론(誠論)과 연계하여 순자미학적으로 풀어보았다.
『중용』의 성론과 순자의 심미의식은 인도(人道)의 극치를 이루었을 때 심미적 신경(神境)에 도달할 수 있다는 논리적 공통점을 가지고 있다. 연구방법은 먼저 『중용』의 성론과 순자의 적위설(積僞說)을 서로 대입하여 심미적 상관성을 탐구해 보고, 다음으로 『중용』의 신개념과 순자의 대신(大神)개념을 연계시켜 심미적으로 풀어가는 방법을 택했다. 그 과정에서 후한(後漢)의 정현(鄭玄)과 송대(宋代) 유학자들의 해석 및 율곡과 다산 등 조선 유학자들의 해석을 함께 참조하여 논의를 전개하였다.
그 결과 『중용』의 성론은 인도의 극치를 목표로 하고 있으며, 그 극치는 천도(天道)를 본받아 끊임없이 정성을 쏟아 넣음으로써 이룰 수 있다는 지극한 인문정신의 현현(顯現)이었으며, 순자의 적위설은 위(僞:인위)를 쌓아야만 아름다울 수 있다는 치열한 심미적 인문정신의 발현을 보여줌으로써 양자의 심미적 목표가 일치된다는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 『중용』의 ‘신’은 인간의 지성(至誠)으로 이루어낸 보이지 않는 힘이며 인도의 극치를 표현한 말이고, 순자의 ‘대신’은 인위의 극치를 다함으로써 얻어지는 최고의 심미경계를 표현한 말이었다. 『중용』의 ‘신’과 순자의 ‘대신’은 심미적 최고경계에서 완전히 부합함을 확인할 수 있었다.

영어초록

ZhongYong(中庸, The Doctrine of the Mean) is the one of the most profound and difficult philosophy books. Until a recent date, researches of ZhongYong have been primarily focused on philosophical understanding of 'Sincerity Theory(誠論)' and ‘The Spirit Theory(鬼神論).' Furthermore, It is true that Xun-zi(荀子,B.C. 315~230)'s thoughts have been neglected because he was regarded as an outsider of Confucianism. Connecting ZhongYong’s concept of Gods(神) with Sincerity Theory, this study interpreted that in Xun-zi’s aesthetic ways to complement these insufficient parts.
ZhongYong and esthetic consciousness of Xun-zi have same logic that one can reach the aesthetic level of Gods when he(she) reached the highest level of the human’s duty. In this study, the research methods are as follows: first, explored that there is an aesthetic association between Sincerity Theory of ZhongYong and Xun-zi’s theory of artificiality accumulation by replace each other, second, aesthetically interpreted ZhongYong’s concept of Gods as a correlation with Xun-zi’s a concept of great Gods(大神). In the process of interpreting, besides, this paper developed the discussion by referring to interpretations of Zhengxuan(鄭玄) in the last Han, Confucian scholars in Song, and Confucian scholars in the Joseon Dynasty such as Yulgok, Dasan.
In consequence, reaching the highest level of the human’s duty is a goal of ZhongYong’s Sincerity theory and reaching that level is the manifestation of great humanistic spirits where anyone can reach by constantly striving to copy the way of Heaven(天道). And, it was checked that both have same goals because Xun-zi’s theory of artificiality accumulation show the aesthetic manifestation of fierce humanistic spirit that it can be beautiful to build artificial art. Also, Gods of ZhongYong is a word that expressed invisible power which is accomplished by human's great sincerity(至誠) and the highest level of human’s duty, and great Gods of Xun-zi is a word that expressed the highest aesthetic limit that can be obtained by do the best in artificial way. The Gods of ZhongYong is completely coincided with the great Gods of Xun-zi in highest aesthetic limit.
