앙드레 베유는 1906년 5월 6일에 파리에서 태어나 1998년 8월 6일에 미국 프린스턴에서 타계한 프랑스 수학자이고, 시몬느 베유는 앙드레 베유의 여동생으로 1909년 2월 3일에 파리에서 태어나 1943년 8월 24일에 영국 애 슈퍼드에서 34세의 젊은 나이에 요절한 프랑스 철학자이자 신비주의자이다. 앞으로 앙드레 베유를 AW 로, 시몬 베유를 SW 로 간략하게 나타내기로 한 다. AW 는 특히 수론과 대수기하학 분야에서 뛰어난 업적을 내어 세계 수학 계에 큰 공헌을 한 20세기의 위대한 수학자이다. 내가 이 글을 쓰게 된 동기 는 다음 세 가지이다. 첫 째, AW 는 아벨다양체와 야코비군의 베유 표현에 관한 나의 연구에 영향을 끼친 수학자이다. 둘 째, SW 는 오빠의 영향을 받 아 여러 수학자들을 만났고, 수학을 이해하려고 노력했을 뿐만 아니라 수학 에 관한 자신만의 견해를 피력했다. 셋 째, 나의 연구에 큰 영향을 주었던 20세기의 위대한 독일 수학자 지겔1)이 AW 에게 학문적으로 뿐만 아니라 인 간적으로 많은 영향을 끼쳤다. 또한 AW 는 지겔을 존경하며 평생 돈독한 관 계를 유지했다.
나는 한 번은 미국 버클리, 두 번은 미국 프린스턴에서 도합 세 번 AW 를 보았다. 나는 UCB 유학 시절인 1980년에 AW 가 버클리에서 수학사에 관 한 초청강연을 할 때 처음으로 그를 보았다. 그는 작은 키에 허리가 약간 구 부정한 74세의 노인이었다. 연로한 진성신2) , 사타케3) 교수들이 AW 에게 깍 듯이 인사하며 존경심을 보이는 모습을 옆에서 지켜보았다. 1988~89년 기간 하버드대학에 방문하여 연구하고 있던 중에 1989년 봄에 틈을 내어 가족과 함께 프린스턴을 방문하여 고등연구소 (간단히 IAS)와 프린스턴 대학을 둘러 보았다. 나는 IAS 의 Langlands4) (간단히 L) 연구실에서 L 과 통성명하며 방문 교수인 Kutzko5) 의 강연을 역시 방문교수인 Vignera6) 와 함께 들었다.
