1. 알코올 중독자 가족에 대한 이해 알코올 중독자 가족이란 가족 중 한 사람이 알코올 중독자인 경우를 말한다. 대개 아버지나 어머니 중 한 사람이 알코올 중독자인데, 대부분의 문헌이 남편이나 아버지가 알코올 중독자인 경우만을 다루는 경향이 있다. 여성이 알코올 중독자인 경우에는 남편들은 대개 포기하여 한부모가족이 되거나 아예 여성 알코올 중독자와 소식을 끊기도 한다. 그에 비해 남편이 알코올 중독자인 경우 부인은 결혼생활을 유지하고 남편의 알코올 중독 문제를 고쳐 보려고 온갖 노력을 다한다. 여성은 성장과정에서 남을 배려하는 쪽으로 사회화되어서 남편이 알코올 중독자이더라도 가능하면 가정을 지키려는 경향을 보인다. 똑같은 알코올 중독문제를 가지고 있더라도 당사자가 부인인가 혹은 남편인가에 따라 가정의 유지가능성이 달라지며, 가족 간의 역동성, 상호작용 또한 매우 다르게 전개된다. 더구나 여성이 알코올 중독자인 가정은 겉으로 잘 드러나지 않아 그 실태를 파악하는데 한계가 있다. 따라서 이 장에서는 남편이나 아버지가 알코올 중독자인 가족에 국한시켜 다루고자 한다.

2. 알코올 중독자 가족의 어려움1) 알코올 중독자 부인 모든 ‘알코올 중독자와의 결혼생활’에 대해 일반화 시키는 것은 무리가 있지만 알코올 중독자의 부인은 알코올 중독자인 남편을 통제하려고 한다. 알코올 중독자 부인은 현실에 직면하여 남편에게 정서적으로 철회하고, 술을 마시지 못하도록 술병을 숨기는 등의 행동을 하게 된다. 남편의 술 문제를 다른 사람에게 숨기기 위해서 사회적으로 고립되기도 하고, 정상적인 생활을 유지하기 위해 가장의 책임을 맡기도 한다. 남편을 술 문제로 인해 부모로서, 남편으로서의 역할을 제대로 수행하지 못한다. 남편은 특히 술에 만취되었을 때에는 신체적, 정서적으로 중요한 역할을 수행하지 못하는데, 때로는 자신의 역할을 회피하기 위해서 술을 마시기도 한다. 그에 대한 반응으로 부인은 술을 마시지 말라고 위협하고나, 때로는 술을 마시도록 부추기기도 한다. 남편의 술 문제를 숨기려고 애를 쓰고, 또 함께 술을 마시다 결국 부인도 알코올 중독자가 되는 경우도 있다.
