The wife of bath`s prologue
To begin with, I would like to provide the summary of the story and intention that writter wanted to tell. She begins her prologue thanking God for her five husbands, all of which she married in the church. The Wife of Bath believes herself to be an expert on the relations between men and women, having had five husbands herself, beginning with her first marriage at age 12. She provides a brief history. then she defends her many marriages with biblical citations, though they are frequently misquoted. She also expands on the status of virginity, claiming that virginity is not necessary to be a good and virtuous person. She says that she will not deny her husband any sex in accordance with Christ’s teachings of generosity. She also says she won’t envy virginity, and speaks openly about “equipment” and “instruments.” She is both direct and opinionated, mostly involving the futility of men attempting to gain domination over women, and her opinions prepare the reader for her tale.
But she had 5 husbands in that period, and It was against to medieval time`s virtues.
A view of womanhood in medieval time encouraged woman to be obedient, virginal, and not allowed to remarry.
Then what is the Chaucer`s main purpose ?
Was it a religious interpretation about the oppression of women? Or, a desire to reveal moral insensibility of the hero more clearly?
