한국 고전소설의 외국어 번역 양상과 의미 - J.S.게일의 <토생전> 번역을 중심으로 (The Translation Practice of the classical Korean novels and its Implication : With J. S. Gale's Translation of Tosaeng-Jeon)

초록

개신교 선교사이자 한국학자, 번역가로 한국문화를 세계에 알리는데 지대한 업적을 남겼던 J. S. 게일은 1917~1919년에 <구운몽>과 <춘향전>을 번역하여 출판하거나 잡지에 연재했으며, 17종의 국문 고소설을 번역하여 필사 및 활자화 된 상태로 보존하고 있었다. 그 자료 중에서 <토생전> 번역인 “The turtle and the rabbit”은 봉건국가를 유지하기 위해 왕권의 존중과 자라의 충성을 강조하는 입장을 취했다. 번역 대상을 그런 생각이 잘 나타나 있는 경판본을 택했으며, 번역에서도 의도적으로 거북을 높이고 토끼를 낮추는 입장을 취했다. 게다가 비속한 표현을 제거했으며, 사설의 맛을 잘 느낄 수 있는 형상적 묘사도 추상화 시켰다. 이렇게 한 것은 유교 이념이 공고하게 드러나 있는 과거 조선의 문화를 존중하고 찬양하여 그 찬란한 영광을 재현하는 것을 번역의 주요 목표로 삼았기 때문이다.
게다가 조선의 심령관이 잘 드러나 있는 ‘魂飛魄散’과 같은 단어는 매우 세심하게 층위를 나누어 구분하였다. 魂魄 중에서도 서구의 영혼과 상대적으로 더욱 근접한 개념이 ‘魂’이었기에 ‘soul’로 번역했으며, ‘魄’은 그보다는 격이 낮은 ‘spirit’이라는 의미로 번역한 것이다. 심지어는 ‘조선은 동양의 희랍’이라고까지 추켜세우며 과거의 한국의 문화를 칭송했다.
게일이 그렇게 과거 한국의 찬란했던 문화에 경도된 것은 그것이 기독교의 정신세계와 다르지 않다고 여겼기 때문이다. 그리하여 기독교의 정신세계와 한국의 찬란했던 과거의 문화를 동질화 시켜버렸다. 그렇게 한 이유는 개신교 선교사인 게일로서는 ‘한국이 상실한 것’을 기독교가 채워줄 수 있다고 여겼기 때문이다. 이러한 생각은 큰 틀에서 본다면 그가 의도하지 않았더라도 동양의 타자성을 지우고 서구의 상상적 배치 속에서 동양을 위치시키는 ‘오리엔탈리즘’의 위험한 企圖와도 유사한 것이다.
게일의 번역은 바로 그런 ‘오리엔탈리즘’에서 말하는 타자성을 배제하고 동질화로 몰고 간 혐의가 짙다. 그 저변에는 당연히 기독교 이데올로기가 자리하고 있다. 그의 이러한 견해는 결국 한국의 문화를 찬란했던 과거의 정신세계로 유폐시키고 자주 독립국가 건설이라는 근대로 가는 길을 차단하려는 식민주의 근대화의 기획으로 귀착될 소지도 안고 있는 것이다. 근대는 당연히 우리의 투쟁과 노력이 아닌 그들 서구에 의해 주도되는 것이라고 여기기 때문이다.

영어초록

J. S. Gale was a Protestant missionary, Korean scholar, and translator who greatly contributed to introducing the Korean culture to the world. His English translation "Choon Yang" was published serially in The Korea Magazine(1917-1918), and his The Cloud Dream of the Nine(1922) was well-known to be the first classical Korean novel introduced to the West. He also translated 19 different classical Korean novels probably during the period of 1917~1919, which are kept in a handwritten or a typed form in Gale, James Scarth Papers, one of which is "The turtle and the rabbit".
The investigation into Gale's translation process and practice in "The turtle and the rabbit shows that he emphasized monarchy and the turtle's loyalty to maintain the feudal state. This proposal is confirmed by the fact that Gale selected the Tosaeng-Jeon text[兎生傳] published in Seoul, which is assessed to reflect the monarch-oriented thoughts more than many other Tosaeng-Jeon versions. He also intentionally placed the turtle in a higher position than the rabbit. Furthermore, he removed vulgar expressions in the source text and abstracted descriptive scenes characteristic of Pansori song story. What did these translation practices suggest? We can suppose that his translation objective was to represent the glorious old Korea, that is, the old Confucian Korean culture he admired. Moreover, Gale distinguished 魂 and 魄 in '魂飛魄散' which characterized Korean spiritualism. He rendered 魂 which is closer to the concept of the Western soul as 'soul' and 魄 as 'spirit' which is supposed to belong to a lower class than soul in spiritual hierarchy. He even called Chosun 'the Eastern Greece' and praised the old Korean culture.
Why was Gale absorbed in the old Korea's glorious culture? I think it is because Gale thought the mental world of the old Korea was not different from Christianism and so he assimilated two different mental worlds. Gale as a Protestant missionary may have thought Christianity could replace what Korea had lost while it was being modernized. Gale's perspective reminds us of the harmful project of Orientalism because Orientalism also erases the otherness of the East and places it in the imaginary position of the West. In this regard, Gale's translation practice is suspected of excluding the otherness of the East and identifying the East with the West just like Orientalism.
Gale's perspective was grounded in his Christian ideology. This kind of view could be connected with the colonial project which confined the Korean culture in its past glorious mental world and blocked the way to constructing the independent nation in the future. It is because Gale and colonialists both considered that Korea's modern could be accomplished not by the Korean people's struggle and effort, but by the West.
