초록

호프만의 단편 『모래인간』은 인문학과 자연과학 영역의 지식과 사유에 대한 고찰이 가능하며, 특히 인물과 사건에 대한 객관적인 설명을 제공하지 않는 서술특성으로 인해 작품에 대한 독자의 적극적 참여를 유도하는 텍스트이다. 그러므로다학문적 관점의 작품읽기를 시도하면서 학생들의 능동적인 토론과 글쓰기를 병행한다면 『모래인간』을 통해 융합적 사고교육을 효과적으로 실행할 수 있다고 여겨진다. 우선 문예학적 관점의 텍스트 읽기를 통해 독일 낭만주의와 계몽주의의문예사적 특성과 그에 따른 인간유형에 대한 비판적 성찰을 시도할 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라 『모래인간』은 당시 과학적 발전의 산물인 망원경과 인조인간의 문제를매개로 과학기술의 폐해와 과학자의 비윤리적 태도를 다룸으로써, 자연과학적 관점의 주제 고찰도 가능하다.
다학문적 관점의 작품읽기 뿐만 아니라 학생들의 능동적인 토론과 글쓰기는 작품에 내포된 융합적 지식과 사고를 확장시키는 데 매우 효과적이다. 그 예로 작품분석 이전에 실행되는 코펠리우스와 코폴라와의 동일인물 가능성, 문예학적, 자연과학적 관점의 주제탐구 토의, 작품분석 이후에 행해지는 나타나엘의 죽음과작품 전체인물의 관련성에 대한 전체토론, 작가와 과학자의 사회적 역할에 관한글쓰기를 들 수 있다. 토론과 글쓰기를 통해 학생들은 주체적으로 텍스트에 기초한 융합적 사고를 확장하게 되며, 나아가 작품의 다양한 문제들을 오늘의 현실과결합하여 생각하고 해결하는 능력을 키우게 된다. 『모래인간』은 본 논문에서 제시된 주제 외에도 융합적 사고교육을 위한 많은 토론과 글쓰기 주제를 포함하고있는 작품이다. 그런 점에서 호프만의 단편 『모래인간』은 ‘읽기-생각하기-말하기-쓰기’를 통해 오늘날 뚜렷이 분리되어 있는 인문학과 자연과학의 경계를 허물고융합적 사고교육을 실현할 수 있는 대표적인 문학 텍스트로 제시된다.

영어초록

Hoffmann’s nouvelle “The Sandman” allows readers to acquire knowledge and rational thinking that are based on the multi-layered fields of study such as literary science and natural science.　 Especially, it attracts active participation from readers by using an unusual narrative style that refuses to give a clear explanation of characters and events. Thus, if an instructor combines text reading skills from multidisciplinary perspectives with active debates and writing composition, then, education for convergence thinking will be carried out effectively.
First and foremost, education for convergence thinking will be fulfilled through a study on the text that is implicit in different themes. Through reading a text from a perspective of literary science, students are expected to understand characteristics of German romanticism and enlightenment and critical thinking on human types accordingly. Also, by the medium of a telescope and a cyborg, which are products of the scientific breakthrough at the time, “The Sandman” covers certain issues of unethical behaviors of scientists and harmful consequences of advancement in scientific technology. In this sense, along with reading texts from multidisciplinary perspectives, discussion in class, and writing composition, students can achieve active learning towards convergence thinking.
There are possible activities: a group discussion on a possibility that Coppelius and Coppola are the same person, a plenary debate on a relationship between the death of Nathanael and other characters, and in-class writing on social roles of a writer and scientist. Critical thinking and writing activities will lead students to a research on the text in a more active and aggressive manner, and at the same time, students are going to consider that issues presented in the text are closely intertwined with realistic problems of today. “The Sandman” offers rich materials for debates and writing aiming convergence thinking, apart from the themes this article points out. In this respect, this Hoffmann’s short story can be presented as a classic literary text that actualizes education for convergence thinking and dissolves a sharp distinction between the humanities and natural science, through the process of ‘reading-thinking-speaking-writing.’
