초록

본 연구의 목적은 박완서의 『미망』에 나타난 근대 개성의 로컬리티를 젠더지리학의 관점에서 분석하여 그의 작품세계를 새롭게 규명하는 데 있다. 그간 『미망』은 역사‧가족사 소설이라는 장르적 특질로 인해 박완서 소설 연구의 자장에서 자주 배제되어 왔다. 그러나 이 작품은 박완서가 집‧가정에서 벌어지는 여성‧가족 이야기를 통해 지속적으로 제시해왔던 근대성 비판이라는 테마와 단절되어 있지 않으며, 오히려 구한말과 식민지 조선이라는 전환기적 시‧공간을 전면화함으로써 그러한 주제의식을 더욱 잘 드러내 보이고 있다.
우리 문학이나 역사에서 개성의 로컬리티는 근대 상업자본주의의 발달과 ‘민족자본’의 거점이라는 경제‧정치사적 대항성을 내포한다. 이러한 점은 『미망』에도 충실히 재현되어 있으나, 본 연구에서 주목하고 있는 것은 개성의 로컬리티가 구축되는 기저에 젠더 이슈가 개입되어 있다는 점이다. 『미망』에서 가족사‧연대기라는 형식적 특질이 갖는 의미는 세대 간 계승되는 가족/젠더질서를 효과적으로 드러낸다는 점에 있으며, 이러한 ‘유산(heritage)’의 이행 과정에 인물들의 스케일 교란과 경계넘기가 긴요한 계기로 작동한다.
‘전처만’은 전근대적 인물이지만 오랜 시간 자신의 ‘위치성’을 생존전략 삼아 그것을 내면화한 존재로서 근대성의 핵심을 누구보다도 빠르게 감각하는 인물이다. 그는 서구적 친밀성과 근대적 섹슈얼리티의 세계의 근간이 되는 새로운 젠더질서를 담지하고, 봉건 체제에 대한 균열의 상징성을 지닌 ‘돈궤’를 후대인 ‘태임’에게 계승한다.
‘태임’이 ‘전처만’으로부터 물려받은 ‘돈궤’는 그의 모(母)인 ‘머릿방 아씨’의 실절(失節)과 죽음, 그리고 그 씨앗인 ‘태남’이 집약되어 있는 것이다. ‘전처만’은 ‘태임’에게 돈궤와 함께 그의 이부(異父) 동생 ‘태남’을 위탁한다. ‘돈궤’의 상징성은 기존의 규범적 가족질서에 들어갈 수 없는 젠더적 사안을 의미한다. ‘태임’은 전환기적 시‧공간에서 잠시 가시화되는 다양한 균열의 지점들이 착종된, 그러나 근대적 생존전략인 그것을 유산으로 물려받는다.
‘태임’은 기존 개성‧개성상인의 범주에 포함되지 않았던 존재들을 새롭게 자본화하는 한편, 혈연의 연대를 넘어 가족의 구조를 변화시키는 공동체를 지향하는 것으로 가문을 재편하고자 한다. 이러한 ‘가족-자본’의 새로운 연결에서 중요한 동력으로 활용되는 것이 젠더 협상과 분업으로, ‘태임’으로부터 다시 그려지는 개성의 로컬리티는 전환기적 시‧공간의 체질에 맞게 그 자신을 탈바꿈하는 과정에서 젠더역학을 버팀목 삼게 된다.
결론적으로 『미망』의 개성은 가족 스케일의 질서가 변용되는 과정과 긴밀히 연결되어 작동하는 공간이다. 본 연구는 『미망』을 통해 그간 개성이라는 장소 정체성을 논할 때 아직 문제시된 바 없는 가족/젠더질서의 의미를 기입함으로써, 오늘날 개성이 지닌 탈근대공간으로서의 다른 가능성을 환기하고자 했다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the locality of modern 開城 in Park Wan-seo’s “未忘” from the point of view of gender geography and to identify newly the world of her works. Since then, “未忘” has been regarded as exceptional in the field of research of Park Wan-seo’s novel due to the genre characteristic, history & family history novel. However, this work is also connected with the theme of criticism of modernity that Park Wan-seo has presented taking home and family as background. In particular, this work emphasizes the consciousness of such themes by presenting on the front of transitional time and space, namely, the end of the dynasty and the colonial Joseon(朝鮮).
In our literature and history, the locality of 開城 represents the development of modern commercial capitalism and the economical & political-historical opposition character as the base of ‘national capital’. This point is faithfully reproduced in “未忘”. However, the focus of this study is that gender issues are involved in the basis of the establishment of locality of 開城.
The meaning of the formal characteristics of “未忘” as ‘family history & chronology’ is that it effectively exposes the family/gender order inherited from generation to generation. And in the process of implementing this ‘heritage’, the scale disturbance and border crossing of the characters act as a critical moment.
Although ‘Jeon, Cheo-Man’ is a pre-modern person, he have been using his location as a survival strategy for a long time and have internalized it, and he quickly senses the core of modernity. It is a new gender order that is the foundation of western intimacy and modern sexuality. ‘Jeon, Cheo-Man’ carries on with it and succeeds it to the latter, ‘Tae-Im’.
The money box that ‘Tae-Im’ inherited from ‘Jeon, Cheo-Man’ condensed devirgination and death of ‘a small back room lady’(the mother of Ta-Im), and its seed ‘Tae-Nam’. ‘Jeon, Cheo-Man’ entrusts ‘Tae-Nam’, his uterine brother to ‘Tae-Im’ along with the money box. The money box symbolizes a gendered issue that cannot fit into the existing normative family order. ‘Tae-Im’ inherited it as a means of modern survival strategies.
‘Tae-Im’ re-capitalizes the beings that were not included in the categories of existing 開城 and 開城 merchants. And she tries to reorganize the family by aiming for a community that changes the structure of the family beyond the age of kin. Gender negotiations and division of labor are important drivers for this new connection of family-capital. The locality of Gaesung, which is drawn from ‘Tae-Im’ again, is based on gender issues in the process of transforming itself according to transitional time and space.
In conclusion, the 開城 of “未忘” is a space that works closely with the process of changing the order of the family scale. This study described the meaning of family/gender order that was not revealed when discussing place identity of 開城, and through this, we tried to call out another possibility as a postmodern space of today’s 開城
