한국의 중도집단은 탈도덕적인가?: 이념성향에 따른 도덕성 기반 비교를 중심으로 (Are Korean Moderates Amoral?: Comparison on Moral Foundations among Different Political Orientation Groups)

초록

한국사회의 균열구조는 과거 지역 중심에서 세대나 이념성향으로 다층화되고 있다. 특히, 젠더, 인권, 환경, 복지 등을 둘러싼 갈등은 진보와 보수의 이념대결로 재편, 격화되는 가운데, 최근 무당파의 증가와 안철수 지지 현상에서 나타난 새로운 중도층의 등장이 학계의 주목을 받고 있다. 이들 집단에 대해 기존 연구는 탈물질적 가치를 지향하는 진보집단의 형성이라거나 혹은 기성의 진보와 보수와 유사한, 실체가 없는 집단이라는 진단을 해왔다. 이에 본 연구는 중도집단이 진보집단과 또는 보수집단과는 근본적으로 다른 도덕성에 기반한 집단인지를 알아보고자 하였으며, 특히 탈물질주의, 집단주의와 같은 한국사회의 가치관의 변화와 관련하여 중도집단의 탈도덕적 현상을 규명하고자 하였다.
본 연구는 전국 단위의 16~64세 연령을 대상으로 온라인 설문을 실시하였으며, 10대를 제외한 총 2,164명의 응답을 분석대상으로 하였다. 분석 결과, 중도집단의 도덕성 기반(moral foundation)은 충성심(loyalty), 권위(authority), 품위(purity)와 같은 결속기반 요소에서 진보집단과 보수집단의 중간 정도에 위치하고 있지만, 배려(care)와 공평성(fairness)과 같은 개인성 기반 요소에서는 진보집단과 보수집단보다 취약한 것으로 나타났다. 탈물질적 가치관에서 중도집단은 보수집단과 유사한 물질추구 성향을 가지는 반면, 수평적 개인주의 및 집단주의 가치관은 진보집단과 보수집단보다 현저히 낮은 수준으로 나타났다. 이는 진보가 개인성에 기반한 도덕성을, 보수가 결속에 기반한 도덕성을 중요시하는 것과 달리 중도는 개인성이나 결속의 도덕성 기반에 포섭되지 않는 집단임을 말한다. 즉, 중도집단은 도덕적 관념이 결여되거나 미약한 ‘탈도덕적’ 성향을 가진다고 할 수 있으며, 향후 이들 집단의 도덕적 공백으로 한국사회의 갈등이 이전과는 다른 양상을 보여줄 것으로 전망된다.

영어초록

Socio-structural conflicts and polarity within today's Korean society has been more noticeable in the gaps by generation and/or ideology than in regional disputes in the past. While in particular the issues on gender, human rights, and social welfare are divided by the ideological disagreement is getting more intensified between the conservatives and the liberal, the recent rise of moderates as an effect of increasing number of independent voters and Ahn CheolSoo syndrome is gaining attention from academia. However, the studies on it have limitations on predicting moderates’ policy preference or voting pattern because of their strict liberals/conservative-focused frame which has long been established from the past. Thus, this study attempted to investigate on the moderates and their moral foundations compared to those of liberals and conservatives. More specifically, we tried examining the amoral tendency of moderates with regards to social change such as post materialism and deepening neoliberalism in South Korea. As a result, moderates with amoral tendency creates widespread apathy towards political parties and weak trust to government. It is assumed that social conflicts and disparity in South Korea will get even more intensified among moderates separately from the liberal-conservative frame. Results showed that the moderates exhibited lower scores in individualizing foundations such as ‘care’ and ‘fairness’ than the liberals and the conservatives. The moderates had higher scores in binding foundations such as ‘loyalty’, ‘authority’ and ‘purity’ than the liberals but scores of moderates were lower than the conservatives’ who highly value in-group solidarity. Meanwhile, moderates showed much lower scores in perceived level of ‘horizontal individualism’ and ‘horizontal collectivism’—that are positively associated with the ‘care’ and ‘fairness’ in moral foundations—than those of liberals and conservatives. Thus, moderates’ low level of cultural disposition might possibly be related to their high vulnerability of moral foundations.
