카카오톡 이모티콘의 기호체계 및 상징에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Sign & Visual Symbols of Kakao Talk Emoticons)

초록

정보 기술의 급격한 발전으로 인한 인터넷과 모바일 기기의 확산으로 전통적인 면대면(面對面) 소통에서 가상공간에서의 쌍방향과 다중소통(多衆疏通)이 확산되고 있다. 비언어적 기호인 이모티콘의 사용이 확산되면서 시⋅공간의 한계를 넘어 이모티콘은 그림으로 표현된 메시지로 감정을 전달하는 역할을 담당하고 있다.
PC통신과 인터넷이 상용화되기 시작한 1980년대는웃는 모습의 이모티콘이 주류를 이루었다면 디지털시대의 이모티콘은 새로운 의사소통을 위한 기호로만국 공통어의 역할을 담당하고 있다. 그러나 이모티콘의 상징 및 기호체계에 관한 연구는 사회문화 현상연구 및 기호학⋅형태심리학 등의 다양한 학문에 근거한 다각적인 연구를 전제로 하기 때문에 상대적으로 심도 깊은 연구가 진행되고 있지 않은 실정이다. 본 연구는 한국의 대표적 디지털 메신저로 급부상한 카카오톡의 캐릭터 기반의 이모티콘의 유형연구및 기호체계를 분석한다. 카톡 이모티콘의 시각적 상징 및 기호체계 연구는 1) 이모티콘의 개념과 유형, 2) 카카오톡 이모티콘의 유형연구 및 기호체계 분석, 3) 카카오톡 이모티콘의 문화 콘텐츠 활용 현황 및가능성 제안 등을 중심으로 구성하였다.
세부적으로 이모티콘의 개념 연구에서는 이모티콘의 정의 및 간략한 역사적 연구, 이모티콘과 유사한개념으로 사용되는 픽토그램, 캘리그램, 이모지 등을연구하였다. 이모티콘의 유형 연구에서는 문자 이모티콘, 이미지 이모티콘, 플래시 이모티콘 등을 연구⋅분석하였다. 이모티콘의 유형연구 및 기호체계 연구에서는 카카오 프렌즈의 7개의 이모티콘을 중심으로 기호(sign)를 기표(signifier)와 기의(signified)의 결합이라정의한 소쉬르의 기호체계에 기반하여 카카오 프렌즈(Kakako Friends)의 이모티콘을 분석하였다. 카카오톡 이모티콘의 문화 콘텐츠 활용 현황 및 가능성 제안에서는 세계인이 공유하는 시각적 상징의 문화적보편성이 중요성을 제안하였다. 동일한 상징형태도 사용되는 사회적 맥락에 따라서 다른 기능을 수행할 수있기 때문에 문화적 특성의 양면성(글로벌과 로컬)에관한 연구가 동시에 행해져야 할 것이다. 이러한 측면에서 글로벌과 로컬의 특성을 상호 비교한 크로스 컬츄럴 시각에서 이모티콘의 상징체계에 관한 연구를제안하다. 연구의 방법은 카톡 이모티콘에 관한 문헌연구 및 인터넷상의 활용 사례 분석을 중심으로 연구하였다.
카카오톡 이모티콘의 유형연구 및 기호체계 분석에관한 본 연구는 이모티콘의 심미성, 기능성의 측면뿐만 아니라 세대와 계층, 문화권을 뛰어넘어 글로벌 콘텐츠로서 K-메시저의 역할을 담당하며 ‘원소스 멀티유즈(One Source Multi Use)’⋅‘멀티소스 멀티유즈(Multi Source Multi Use)’로서 다양한 영역에 활용될것으로 예상한다.

With the proliferation of internet and mobile devices due to the rapid development of information technology, there has been a widespread multimodal communication in the virtual space from the traditional face-to-face communication. As the use of emoticons, which are nonverbal symbols, emoticons are responsible for conveying emotions to the messages represented by pictures beyond the limits of time and space.
In the 1980s, when PC communication and the Internet began to be commercialized, smiley emoticons had become mainstream, and emoticons in the digital era played a role in the common language of all over the world as a symbol for new communication.
However, studies on the symbols and sign systems of emoticons are based on diverse studies such as socio-cultural phenomenon research and semiotics, gestalt psychology, etc., it is realistic that research on this subject has not progressed comparatively.
This study analyzes character based emoticons and sign system of Kakao Talk which emerged as Korea 's representative digital messenger. The study of visual symbol and sign system of Kakako Talk emoticon are as follows: 1) concept and type of emoticons, 2) analysis of type and sign system of Kakao Talk emoticons, 3) present situation and possibility of the use of cultural contexts of Kakao Talk emoticons.
In detail, we studied the definition and the brief historical research of emoticons, and pictograms, calligrams, emoji, etc., which are used in similar concepts to emoticons. In the study of emoticons types, we studied and analyzed character emoticons, image emoticons, and flash emoticons.
This research analyzed the type of emoticons and the symbol systems, based on F. de Saussure’s sign system, which defines ‘sign’ as a combination of ‘signifier’ and ‘signified’ around 7 emoticon of Kakao Friends. The present status and potential proposals of cultural contents of Kakao Talk emoticons suggested the importance of cultural universality of visual symbols shared by the world. Because the same symbolic form can perform different functions according to the social context in which it is used, research on both aspects of cultural characteristics(global and local) should be done at the same time. In this respect, we propose a study on the sign system of emoticons in cross-cultural perspective comparing the characteristics of global and local view. The research method was based on references and case analysis on the interne of Kakao Talk emoticons.
This study is based on the type of Kakao Talk emoticons and the analysis of the sign system. It is not only the aesthetic and functional aspects of the emoticon but also plays the role of K-messenger for one source multi use and multi source multi use.
