초록

이 글은 퀴어 이론가 이브 코소프스키 세즈윅(Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick)의 성 정체성을 둘러싼 의심과 자격 논란을 분석한다. 먼저 세즈윅의 커밍아웃을 무시하고 왜곡하는 주장들을 검토하면서, 섹스-젠더-섹슈얼리티가 개개인의 체현 감각과 정체성을 구성하는 다양한 경로와 방식 중 특정한 일부만 진정성을 보장받을 수 있다는 믿음과 그 전제들을 분석한다. 그다음 세즈윅이 자신의 ‘퀴어한’ 정체성을 인식하고 설명한 방식이 어떻게 섹스-젠더-섹슈얼리티에 대한 규범적 인식틀을 교란하고 정체성의 진정성을 보증한다고 믿어지는 요소와 규칙들을 어떻게 토대부터 뒤흔드는지를 탐구한다. 나아가 세즈윅에게 적합하고 남들에게도 인정받을 이름을 찾아주는 대신, 세즈윅이 성 정체성의 진정성을 판별하는 데 쏠린 힘들을 어떤 다른 생산적인 방향으로 돌리는지 검토한다. 마지막으로 세즈윅의 개인 서사와 이론 작업으로부터, 엄격한 범주와 배타적인 정체성 정치의 문법에 기대지 않고 퀴어 정체성을 설명할 기초적인 이론적 자원을 추출한다. 그로써 기존의 이분법적 범주에 맞지 않아 자격을 의심받는 퀴어한 존재들을 위한 보충 설명에서 더 나아가 동일시 이론 자체를 비이원론적으로 재편할 단초를 마련하고자 한다. 현재에도 남성/여성, 동성애자/이성애자, 유성애/무성애 이분법의 경계에 놓인 퀴어들이 자신을 설명하고 이해받는 데 어려움을 겪는 현실을 고려할 때, 이 논의는 정체성의 인정에 작동하는 규범과 정상성을 해체하고 차이를 설명할 대안적 언어를 제공함으로써 다양한 경계적 주체들에게 살 만한 삶을 마련하는 데 도움이 될 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This article analyzes the doubts and eligibility debates surrounding queer theorist Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's gender identity and sexual identity. It begins by examining the arguments that ignore and distort Sedgwick's coming out, and analyzes the premises in these arguments underlying the belief that only some of the many ways in which sex, gender and sexuality constitute each individual’s sense of embodiment and identity can be authentic. It then explores the way Sedgwick perceived and articulated their “queer” identity disrupts those normative frameworks of sex-gender-sexuality and shakes the foundation of the elements and rules that are believed to guarantee the authenticity of identity. Instead of finding a name for Sedgwick that works for them and that others will recognize, this article examines how Sedgwick redirects the energies that are focused on determining the authenticity of their gender and sexual identities in other, more productive directions. Finally, it extracts foundational theoretical resources from Sedgwick's personal narratives and theoretical works to account for queer identities without resorting to rigid categories and the exclusive grammar of identity politics. In doing so, I hope to provide not only a supplemental account for queer people whose eligibility is questioned because they do not fit into the established dichotomous categories, but also to lay the groundwork for a non-dualistic reconfiguration of identification theory itself. Given that queer people on the border between the male/female, homosexual/heterosexual, and sexual/asexual binaries still struggle to explain themselves and be understood, this discussion can help to create livable lives for a range of liminal subjects, by deconstructing the norms and normativities that operate in the recognition of identity and providing an alternative language to describe difference.
