맹세와 실행으로 완성되는 詩의 논리:『카비야 알람카라』(Kāvyālaṃkāra) 제5장을 중심으로 (Poetic Logic as Vow and its Accomplishment: in the 5th Chapter of the Kāvyālaṃkāra of Bhāmaha)

초록

일반적으로 논쟁과 주석 전통이 중심이 되는 인도학 전반에서 논리학은 중요한 영역을 차지하는 학문이다. 인식론, 존재론, 우주론에서 해탈론에 이르기까지 논리학이 미치는 영역은 다양하고 그 영향력 또한 인도지성사에서 큰 몫을 담당한다. 그러나 시학(詩學), 특히 인도 고전 예술시(kāvya)의 작시법(作詩法) 문헌에서 이를 다루는 경우는 그리 많지 않다. 애초에 문학작품에서 성립하는 논리는 논쟁을 위한 논리학과는 그 본령을 달리 하기 때문이다. 이러한 관점은 『카비야 알람카라』(Kāvyālaṃkāra, 이후 KA로 약칭) 제5장의 논의에서도 크게 다르지 않다. 그럼에도 불구하고 저자 바마하(Bhāmaha, 7세기경)는 KA 제5장 전반부의 내용을 논리학의 용어와 개념에 대해 개설하는 데에 할애한다. 이러한 논의에서 말하는 논리(nyāya)의 범주는 좁은 의미의 논리학과는 궤를 달리 하지만, 한편으로는 당대 논리학 전통의 권위가 시학 전통을 위해 재생산되는 과정이기도 하다.
한편 해당 장의 후반부는 전반부의 논리학 개설과는 다소 다른 흐름으로 진행된다. 바마하가 말하는 시에서의 논리는 진리의 증명이나 타당성과 연관되는 것이 아니라 오히려 해당 주장 (또는 명언)이 실질적으로 실현되는 것인지 아닌지에 의해 판가름나는 것이다.
과연 시의 논리에서 주장이란 어떠한 방식으로 이루어져 있으며, 저자 바마하가 말하는 nyāya는 어떠한 의미와 범주를 지니는가? 이를 이해하기 위해 본고에서는 KA 제5장의 내용을 구체적으로 고찰함으로써 실질적으로 시에서 적용되는 소위 ‘논리’라는 것이 어떠한 특징을 지니고 있는지, 그리고 이와 관련된 시적 허용의 실례에 대해 알아보고자 한다.

영어초록

In general, in the field of Indology, logic takes on an important role as a methodology in the texts dealing with debates among philosophical schools and in commentary traditions. From the areas of epistemology, ontology and cosmology to the theory or practice of liberation, the domain of logic is diverse and it has had a large influence on Indian intellectual history. However, there are very few works on poetics that deal with logical materials. One of the possible reasons is that the logic established in literary works is different from the logic used for debates. This point of view does not differ significantly from the discussion of the 5th chapter (pariccheda) of the Bhāmaha’s Kāvyālaṃkāra (KA). Bhāmaha devotes a section of the first half of the 5th chapter to this topic, wherein he gives an introduction to the terminologies and the several concepts pertaining to logic. The intriguing fact, however, is that this discussion is not closely related to the poetics practically. For Bhāmaha, though he points out the difference between śāstra and kāvya, the logic is also one of the important elements to compose beautiful poems by establishing clearness (prasāda) and by avoiding defects (doṣa) ― especially the ‘absence of proposition, cause and example’ (pratijñā-hetu-dṛṣṭānta-hīna) ― in them.
On the other hand, the second half of the chapter proceeds in a slightly different way from the general introduction on logic in the first half. In this part, the word pratijñā in poems has expanded denotation as ‘vow.’ Therefore the logic in the poem that he explains is not to determine the existence of an object in a proposition, or to establish the proof or validity of absolute truth, but to determine whether or not the proposition (or vow) is accomplished or not.
Then, how could such an elaborate description dealing with the logic in poetry have been given, and for what reason the author devote half of one whole chapter on poetics on the establishment of this logical outline? In order to understand this, in this paper, I examine the contents and characteristics of the 5th chapter of KA and try to analyze the so-called ‘logic’ which is applied in poetry.
