현지 시장의 전략적 중요성과 해외 자회사의 역량이 자회사 성과에미치는 영향: 집권화의 조절효과를 중심으로 (The Effects of Strategic Importance of Local Environment and Capability of Local Subsidiary on Performance of the Subsidiary: Focusing on the Moderating Effect of Centralization)

초록

본 연구는 현지 시장의 전략적 중요성과 해외 자회사의 역량이 자회사 성과에 미치는 영향을 집권화의조절효과를 중심으로 실증분석하고 있다. 중국에 진출한 한국 기업 144개 자회사를 대상으로 실증분석을실시한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 현지 시장의 전략적 중요성은 자회사의 성과에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로나타났다. 이러한 결과는 다국적기업이 중요하게 고려하는 시장에서 자회사는 경쟁력 확보를 위한 지속적인노력을 통해 성과가 높아질 수 있음을 시사한다. 둘째, 자회사의 역량은 자회사의 성과에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 선행연구들이 주장하는 바와 일관되게, 자회사의 내부 역량이 경쟁우위를창출하는 원천으로 활용되어 자회사의 성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 점을 보여준다. 다음으로 집권화의조절효과를 살펴본 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 현지 시장의 전략적 중요성과 자회사 성과의 관계에서 본사의집권화는 U자형의 조절효과를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 초기에는 본사의 집권화가 시장의 중요성에 따른자회사의 자율적인 의사결정을 막는 부정적인 영향을 미쳐 현지 시장의 전략적 중요성과 성과 간의 관계를약화시키지만, 집권화의 수준이 일정 수준을 넘어서면 본사와 자회사 간 공통지식의 증가와 협업의 용이성등으로 인해 현지 시장의 전략적 중요성과 성과 간의 관계를 강화시킨다는 것을 나타낸다. 마지막으로 자회사역량과 자회사 성과의 관계에서 본사의 집권화는 유의한 부(-)의 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는자회사가 자체적인 역량을 활용하여 성과를 창출하는 경우 자율적인 의사결정이 중요한데, 본사의 집권화는이러한 의사결정을 저해하는 요인이 되기 때문에, 집권화가 자회사의 역량과 성과 간의 관계를 약화시킬 수있다는 것을 의미한다. 본 연구는 그동안 국제경영 분야에 상반되게 존재해왔던 집권화의 효과를 비선형으로제시하면서 시장의 전략적 중요성과 해외 자회사의 역량에 따라 본사의 집권화 수준이 달라져야 한다는 점을보여주었다는 측면에서 유용한 이론적·실무적 시사점을 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

영어초록

This study examines the effects of the strategic importance of local environment and the level of local resources and capabilities on the performance of the foreign subsidiaries with the focus on the moderating effect of centralization. This study makes empirical analysis using the previous study on the roles of subsidiaries from Bartlett and Ghoshal. the classification of roles of subsidiaries from Bartlett and Ghoshal is composed of the strategic importance of local environment and the level of local resources and capabilities. This study analyzed a sample of 144 subsidiaries of multinational corporations from Korea in China.
This results of empirical analysis are as follows. First, the strategic importance of local environment has positive effect on the performance of subsidiaries. This result shows that subsidiaries can achieve high performance through making sustained efforts enough to obtain competitive advantages where multinational corporation consider its local market strategically important.
Second, the level of local resources and capabilities has positive effect on the performance of subsidiaries. This result is consistent with those of previous studies. This result shows that internal resources and capabilities of the subsidiaries have positive impact on the performance of the subsidiaries because they play major roles of sources of competitive advantage.
The moderating effects of centralization are as follows. Centralization of headquarter has a U-shaped moderating effect between strategic importance of local environment and performance of the subsidiaries. This result indicates that the centralization of headquarter could reduce the autonomy of subsidiaries and then subsidiaries might not make rapid and direct response on local market whereas the strategic importance of local environment requires more rapid decision of local responsiveness.
Therefore, centralization would weaken the performance of subsidiaries as the strategic importance of local environment increases. Nevertheless, when the strategic importance of local environment is very high, the centralization of headquarter would provide subsidiaries ample and sufficient knowledge for local market and then subsidiaries could make more effective responsiveness on the local market.
As a result, centralization raises the performance of the subsidiaries as the strategic importance of local environment increases.
In addition, the level of centralization negatively moderates the relationship between the level of local resources and capabilities and the performance of subsidiaries. This result shows that autonomous decision-making of subsidiary is more efficient when its own local resources and capabilities are outstanding and excellent. However, the excessive centralization of headquarter would not be helpful for autonomous decision-making of subsidiaries and even hinder the right and quick decision of subsidiaries. Therefore, it decrease the performance of the subsidiaries as local resources and capabilities of subsidiaries are reinforced.
This study provides useful theoretical and practical implications in that the level of centralization of headquarter should be carefully chosen according to the strategic importance of local environment and the level of local resources and capabilities. In other words, this findings provides possible explanation how centralization affects the relationship among the strategic importance of local environment, the level of local resources and capabilities, and the performance of subsidiaries.
